MHL's new adapter can handle 8K video and link your devices

If you thought MHL's existing adapter spec could handle just about everything under the sun, you ain't seen nothin' yet. The MHL Consortium has taken the wraps off of SuperMHL, a new connector format that's ready for hardware you can't even buy yet. It can play gigantic 8K videos at 120 frames per second, and it's also ready for wider color ranges (up to 48-bit) that present a more natural-looking picture. Also, you can link multiple SuperMHL devices -- it's possible to steer your TV, receiver and Blu-ray player using one remote. Think of it as a supercharged version of the years-old HDMI-CEC control standard.

Other perks? You can now charge devices that use up to 40W of power, so you won't have problems juicing up a high-end tablet (or theoretically, a laptop) while it sends video to the TV. There's also support for all-encompassing sound technologies like Dolby Atmos and DTS-UHD, and the connector is reversible much like USB Type-C. If there's anything holding the technology back, it's the wait. The spec will be available near the end of January, but it's going to take much longer than that for device makers to build it into TVs and peripherals. It'll be a long, long while before you're watching 8K movies on a next-generation streaming media stick.

In addition to an action-cam for adventurous kids, Fuhu has announced new Big Tab options at CES -- and they're so huge, they dwarf the 24-inch model launched in 2014. These latest entries to the Big Tab lineup include 42-inch, 55-inch and 65-inch models, so they're definitely not something you'd hold in your hand to watch Netflix or check your emails on. Fuhu envisions these tablets to be used in kitchens and living rooms for interactive activities or as smart TVs, as they're touchscreen displays with access to Google Play. The 55- and the 65-inch ones even have full ultra HD resolution, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC. According to USA Today, these huge tablets will hit the market in the second half of 2015, with the cheapest option priced at $699. Obviously, the most expensive one will cost you quite a bit: $3,999 for the 65-inch 4K UHD model.

We just got a chance to see exactly what E Ink's new Prism tech looks like in person. And? It's pretty neat! As you might be able to tell from the admittedly sped-up GIF above, it's a bit mesmerizing, but still manages to be subtle. The outfit's Joseph Fillion describes it as "more than static, but not quite digital." What he means by that is it isn't the type of thing you'd likely see used on billboards or other advertisements, but more along the lines of navigational opportunities and branding. For example, you could carry an RFID chip in your pocket at a hotel and it'd change the color of the walls letting you know you were actually headed in your room's direction, possibly with the place's logo appearing once you've reached your destination. Or imagine your living room's walls changing color in accordance to your thermostat's temperature reading. It seems futuristic as hell, but it's much more Her than Blade Runner.

At this year's CES, Intel's keynote is all about the future of computing.

It just rolled out the Curie, a computer that's literally the size of a button. It's just a prototype, but it's loaded with sensors and can run for extended periods of time.

Intel is also talking a lot about how to control computers through gestures rather than with a traditional keyboard and ouse. As one of its examples of how that tech can be used, the company demoed a 3D monitor that had a 3D camera embedded inside.

During the demo, the man was able to play a virtual piano without actually touching the screen. This allowed him to actually press virtual keys as if he was really playing a piano rather than just tapping a screen.

 Intel hasn't implemented this type of technology in any real products yet, but it's an interesting concept.

Dell's super-thin, depth-sensing tablet is available now for $400

Remember that 8-inch, super-high-res tablet Dell showed off back in September? You know, the one with the depth-sensing camera? It's OK if you don't, but really, you should give this a second look -- yes, even if you have tablet fatigue. Dell's Venue 8 7000 series goes on sale today, with a starting price of $400, and it's notable for not one, but several reasons. For starters, it's the first with Intel's RealSense camera setup, which in this case includes an 8-megapixel rear camera paired with two 720p ancillary ones. The three sensors work together to shoot different variations of a shot, each with a different area of focus. Basically, then, you can go in after the fact and either sharpen or soften the focus on any part of the photo -- yep, just like on a Lytro camera. Also, because these photographs are actually a composite of three different shots, you can easily apply effects to select parts of the picture. Think: sepia for just the bride and groom, with bright colors in the background. (Don't judge me for my tacky taste, OK?) Lastly, an over-the-air update in the coming months will allow you to actually measure items in the photo with an on-screen ruler.

Other than those fancy camera tricks, you should be impressed by the hardware: It's damn gorgeous. With the new Venue 8, Dell combines a pixel-dense 8.4-inch, 2,560 x 1,600 display with a well-made aluminum frame that measures just 6mm thick. To put that in perspective, that's thinner than all of its main competitors -- namely, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3. And, because that screen is an OLED panel, the quality is stunning as well: punchy colors and wide viewing angles, with a strong backlight throughout. What's nice, too, is that Dell was smart enough to price it at $400 -- just low enough to give the Galaxy Tab S and iPad mini 3 a run for their money. Hopefully we'll get to review one of these soon, but if you seriously can't wait for us to weigh in, it's available now, with 16GB of storage (expandable via microSDXC) and either LTE or just WiFi.

Sharp wants to put a 120-inch 4K display on commercial walls

Every year, TVs are a big deal here at the Consumer Electronics Show. Therefore, it's no surprise that Sharp would have a huge presence here in Las Vegas. And when I say huge, I mean huge. Just like last year, when it teased its 85-inch 8K TV with glasses-free 3D, Sharp's now showing off a 120-inch 4K Commercial LCD display. According to the company, one day this could replace video walls in public spaces (like at Times Square, for instance), as well as projectors in classrooms and conference rooms. At the moment, there's no word on how much one of these would cost interested parties -- but it's safe to imagine it won't be budget-friendly at all.

Unfortunately, no image could do this display justice -- you have to be in front of it to see how beautiful it is. It's extremely, well, sharp, bright and it makes you feel as if you're staring into a wall, living in whatever world you're looking at. So, if you're here at CES, it's definitely worth checking out. And why not, maybe one day you could see one of these, or something similar, make its way into the consumer market.

Sony Just Solved The Biggest Problem With Google Glass

One of the biggest problems with wearable head displays so far is that tech companies have a hard time making gorgeous products that people actually want to wear. 

Most notably, Google launched its developer version of Glass in 2012, but the actual product still hasn’t launched yet and even company execs don't wear them in public very much these days.

But Sony’s doing things a little differently.

Sony’s new SmartGlasses Attach clips on to your existing sunglasses or prescription glasses so that you can wear it whenever you feel like you may need it.

With Sony's approach, you can wear the same glasses you've always worn — the style is barely an issue.

It’s not meant to be an “always on” display like Google Glass, which you’re kind of stuck wearing for a long period of time once you leave the house with it.

Sony’s new gadget does a lot of the same things Google Glass does, but the demos we’ve seen so far show how it works in specific circumstances. For example, if you’re going for a bike ride, you’d be able to view a compass that tells you which direction you’re going. The display itself is small, but much brighter than that of Google Glass.

The screen sits above the corner of your right eye completely out of view, and you need to make a conscious effort to look over at it.

This seems like a necessity to avoid blocking your view. But if you’re using it during a sport or a bike ride like Sony advertises, it seems like diverting your attention to look over at the display could pose an inconvenience. This is where Google’s more visible display actually seems more useful.

Overall, though, the prototype I played with worked well, and it seems like a more sensible approach to wearable di! splays t han what we’ve seen so far. 

Google generated a lot of buzz with Glass a few years ago, making it seems like a gadget for adventurers that want to document their experiences. 

Sony’s gadget lets you do that, too, but you can take it off when you’re finished and go back to wearing normal glasses.

Words Can't Describe How Good Samsung's New TVs Look

Samsung announced a new line of TVs at the Consumer Electronics show this week.

They come in a variety of sizes, all the way up to 100+ inches and feature 4K, or Ultra High Definition (UHD), displays.

A lot of people like to scoff at 4K TVs. Why would you need a TV that has twice the resolution of a regular HD TV when regular HD TV is enough?

But those people haven't seen one of those TVs in person. Samsung's new sets are breathtaking, especially the ones with curved screens. It feels better than reality, like you're looking through a window into another dimension.

A lot of people don't understand why the screen is curved, but if you sit in front of one for a few minutes, you'll get it. It's like being immersed in the show.

Of course, there are a bunch of caveats to owning a 4K TV. They're insanely expensive. The 100-inch+ models can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Most content isn't shot in the right resolution, so you won't be able to get the full experience even if you can afford one of Samsung's TVs.

That said, it'll get better over time. Content producers are already experimenting with 4K TV shows and movies. The same goes for streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Instant. And the price of the sets will go down over the next few years. Eventually, they'll be just as affordable as a regular HD TV.

In the meantime, if you get a chance to watch something in 4K, try it. It'll blow your mind.

Sony's head-mounting display will turn spectacles into smart glasses

It's no secret that Sony's been working on a sort of Google Glass analog, but the fact that the company's also got a bolt-on display that can (ideally) turn any pair of glasses into a savvy wearable is nothing short of impressive. After Sony wrapped up this year's CES press conference, we got the chance to yank a pair out of some poor spokesperson's hands and strap them on for ourselves. Long story short: Sony just might have a winner on its hands.

Here's the thing you have to remember: This isn't the first time Sony's tried to dangle a teensy display in front of your eye. Unlike the company's own SmartGlasses (which exist as a discrete set of frames), the Attach lives on as a separate unit that attaches to any pair of compatible glasses. At least during those early days post-launch, the selection of frames that'll play nice will be pretty limited as the physical connector on these prototype units is... unique to say the least. It's a wide, peculiarly shaped gap that the Attach fits into, and it just seems awfully unlikely that a Luxottica would ever embrace such a distinct style. A Sony spokesperson said, though, that the final model would support a whole host of mounting methods, including truly mundane solutions like adhesive.

Anyway, let's talk about wearing the thing! Just like Google Glass, a tiny prism sits in front of your right eye and it acts as what Sony calls an OLED microdisplay. Once you get used to it appearing and disappearing from view while your eyes focus on other things, the semi-persistent image is bright, vivid and crisp, even if it isn't immediately obvious how you're supposed to interact with what you see. Most of the demo scenarios Sony dreamed up involve sports in one way or another -- one visualized a path that wound through a series of Japanese mountains; while others highlighted the imaginary route of a golf ball as it hooked down toward the final green at Augusta. Sony's clearly gunning to imbue the thing with some sports savvy, but surely it wouldn't be that hard to broaden the Attach's skillset to cater to we, mostly immobile, bespectacled types. Still, the prototype frames seemed almost too light and insubstantial -- I wouldn't be surprised if they were 3D printed.

It's a shame that we don't know how much the SmartGlasses Attach will cost, nor when it'll make the leap from show-floor trinket to honest-to-goodness product. Sony's going to court mostly developers for at least a little while after launch though, so maybe we're looking at more than a smart pair of sport goggles after all.

This router can power your devices wirelessly from 20 feet away

Wireless charging hasn't really set the world on fire. Since the Palm Pre first introduced us to the idea at CES 2009, a few companies have added similar functionality to their phones and smartwatches. Power without wires is undoubtedly useful, but none of the solutions have ever set our devices free from a charging pad, which is tantamount to plugging them in, really. Energous is one of a handful of companies hoping to change that. It claims its technology can charge your phone and wearable from up to 20 feet away, no wires required.

Energous' system is called WattUp, and it works using a mix of RF, Bluetooth and a lot of patent-pending technology. The transmitter is where most of the magic happens. It communicates with and locates compatible devices using low-energy Bluetooth. Once they've established contact with a device, they send out focused RF signals on the same bands as WiFi that are then absorbed and converted into DC power by a tiny chip embedded in the device. These transmitters can be built into household appliances, TVs, speakers and standalone "energy routers."

This conversion, known as "rectification," is not a new idea, but Energous' application of it is. Its latest generation of chips are around 70 percent efficient -- a typical wireless charging mat clocks in at around 90 percent -- and can provide enough power to easily charge both a phone and wearable from a single bedside transmitter.

To demo its tech, Energous has turned a casino suite into a faux home full of wireless power, which we dropped by to allow the company's founder Michael Leabman to put on a show for us. The routers are able to offer a closed network, letting you choose what devices are allowed power (ideal for public locations), or an open network, offering power to all. Regardless of network type, the router can prioritize devices low on battery, and automatically rejig the hierarchy as a desired charge level is achieved. Using an iPad to control the transmitters, Leabman powered various bulbs and smartphones with the tap of an on-screen button.

The main benefit Energous touts is mobility, and true to his word, Leabman was able to move freely around the show home, with the software automatically choosing which transmitter was best-placed to pipe power to his smartphone. The handover was near-instantaneous, and very reminiscent of how a tablet or laptop can switch between WiFi transmitters on the fly. Because there aren't yet any devices that directly integrate the WattUp technology, the phones were receiving power through modified battery cases, and there was no wearable demo on offer. With the size of the chips, though, there's nothing stopping a Samsung or an Apple from adding the tech to its devices in the coming years.

These are early days for Energous. It's made a lot of progress since its formation in 2012, shrinking its transmitters from the size of a coffee table to that of an oversized router. Instead of producing and managing routers, chips and software itself, it's looking to license it out to other companies to integrate into their devices. So far it's partnered with Foxconn (which makes more of the world's electronics than any other single company), South Korea's SK Telesys (part of that country's largest conglomerate after Samsung) and a handful of smaller companies, including Haier and the makers of the popular Hexbug miniature robot toys.

Energous believes this licensing strategy will help it bring its technology to market as early as 2016. In around six months, it'll produce a reference design for both the transmitter and receiver that manufacturers can modify to fit their own needs. It does expect some second-tier manufacturers to use its references wholesale, but big players like Samsung, should they decide to go with WattUp, would be more likely to modify and integrate the tech into their own designs.

The company is making moves to attract partners, like joining the Power Matters Alliance as chair of its new "uncoupled power" working group, and adding respected engineer Martin Cooper -- aka the father of the cellphone -- to its board of advisors. Nonetheless, if, how and when WattUp will roll out is down to Energous' partners. The company will need a big-name manufacturer to sign up for the tech, and until that happens, it's unlikely to take off in a massive way. Should that happen, though, the potential is huge. Imagine toys that never run out of power; wearables you never need to take off; energy routers built into every home appliance or light fitting. The future for Energous could be bright, but it doesn't have to persuade you or I; it needs to persuade the companies that manufacture our devices.

This is Toshiba's answer to the Surface Pro 3

Until now, if you wanted a tablet powerful enough to double as a laptop, there was really only one acceptable option: the Surface Pro 3. Sure, there were other such devices out there, but the SP3 was uniquely thin and light -- kind of a crucial detail for a device that's supposed to work equally well in notebook and tablet modes. But times, they are a-changin', and other companies are starting to catch up. Take Toshiba, for instance. The PC maker just revealed the Portege Z20t, a laptop/tablet hybrid with a 12.5-inch screen (compared to the Surface Pro 3's 12-inch display), but an even lighter design. All told, it comes in at just 0.35 inch thick and 1.6 pounds for the tablet piece, versus 1.76 pounds for the SP3. Basically, then, it has the same size and thickness as Microsoft's tablet, except it should be even easier to hold.

Additionally, thanks to a low-power Intel Core M processor under the hood, the Z20t is actually fanless, though to be fair, the vents on the Surface are nearly invisible. As a result of that power-sipping chip, the battery life should be pretty decent: 9.1 hours with just the tablet, and 17.5 hours with the help of an included keyboard dock. Interestingly, though Core M chips can get down to 4.5 watts, Toshiba says the Z20t will never dip quite that low. We suppose it was a matter of achieving long battery life (a hallmark of Core M tablets), while still keeping the performance strong enough to compete with other devices.

And what would a Surface competitor be without a pen display? Indeed, the Z20t's 12.5-inch display has an optional Wacom-made digitizer, allowing for pressure-sensitive pen input (2,048 levels of sensitivity, to be exact). It's also coated with an anti-glare finish that does a good job keeping glare at bay. So far as we can tell, the only potential downside is that the resolution tops out at 1,920 x 1,080, as opposed to 2,160 x 1,440 on the Surface Pro 3. Even then, though, this is primarily aimed at business users, not regular consumers, and based on everything we've heard, IT departments seem to be less concerned with laptops' pixel count in the first place.

Finishing up our tour of the device, you'll find dual cameras, as well as a micro-HDMI socket, micro-USB connection and a microSD slot on the tablet itself. The dock, meanwhile, brings full-size RGB, HDMI, Ethernet and two USB 3.0 ports. Additionally, the keyboard has a Kensington lock slot with a mechanism that prevents someone from unlatching the tablet when it's connected to the locked-up dock. It'll go on sale this January, with options for either 4GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of solid-state storage. The starting price will be $1,399, but again, that doesn't include the optional pen digitizer. To get that feature, you'll need to pony up at least $1,899.

Sony's new TVs are thin... very thin

When visitors see your new Sony Bravia, the answer to their first question will be "4.7mm," because that's how thick these new TVs are at their thinnest point. If, however, your friends and lovers aren't impressed, then you might have to wheel out some other facts about your new home entertainment setup. The top-line XBR 900C 4K TVs come in 55, 65 and 75-inch flavors, and gain a new X1 4K processor which upgrades the picture quality of any 4K source and enhancing the dynamic range and color.

If your budget doesn't stretch that far, then you can grab one of the company's cheaper models, which also get a swanky 4K engine and a Triluminos display. All of the new TVs are equipped with PlayStation Now and run Android TV, enabling you to browse the internet and use voice search if you have a microphone-enabled remote control. These other models run from 43 all the way up to 75-inches, and will filter out into stores in the spring. There's no word on pricing, but imagine that if you have to ask the price of a 75-inch 4K TV that's 4.7mm thick, you probably can't afford it.

Sony's still-new SmartWatch 3 gets a stainless steel makeover

Sony's SmartWatch 3 only trickled onto store shelves back in November, but the company has decided it's not done tweaking the formula just yet. Just as some last-minute leaks foretold, Sony just pulled back the curtain on a stainless steel version of the SmartWatch 3 here at its CES 2015 conference and it's, well, exactly what you'd expect it to be.

Same 1.6-inch 320×320 display, same IP68 water resistance chassis, same Qualcomm chipset, same spate of light and motion sensors -- it's just a gussied-up version of the regular SW3 meant to trade athletic appeal for some much needed aesthetic appeal. If anything, Sony's design committee seems to have put form over function this time: We've already determined that if nothing else the SW3 shines as a watch for athletic types, and those folks almost certainly aren't going to wear a more substantial steel band while they try to keep tabs on their split times. Then again, the SteelWatch 3 would be worth it if it launched in February with the right price tag, but since Sony's keeping mum, we'll just have to see.
