Toshiba's Dishing Out a 55-inch 3DTV with 4x the HD (And No Glasses!) If you have over $10,000 and a hunger for ludicrously high definition TVs, Toshiba's impending 55-inch predator is gunning for your wallet and cranium. 4k resolution is more spec candy than anything, but glasses-free 3D? Yes please.

If you want 3D, you'll have to do with a measly 720p, but 2D content will enjoy the beastly mega-resolution that smashes 1080p by a factor of four. Engadget says it'll arrive the first quarter of this year. So start saving. Let's hope CES has more headwear-eliminating 3D sets (and 4k resolution monsters). [Engadget via The Verge]

We're still days away from CES but the promises show no signs of slowing down. ASUS is the latest, hosting a Taipei event in which its representatives rattled off a long list of fabulous devices to whet your appetite. First up is a 3G version of the Transformer Prime, presumably boasting some more capable AGPS onboard. We're told the 7-inch Eee Memo Pad will be on display here at CES as well but, most interestingly, that a tablet running Windows 8 on ARM is coming a little further down the road. It's said to be at least similar in design to the Prime but an indicated release of late 2012 sadly leaves us wanting.

Frowny-faced USB adapters? They're the future, says Motorola. The company has just posted a teaser video inviting us all to "Stay Unplugged," featuring an animated USB brick that will break your heart as it sheds a single tear. What does this mean? Wireless power is going to be a big part of the company's CES plans, we'd say, but we'll all have to wait and see the details. In the interim, don't feel bad for the poor thing. It is, after all, a vampire.

Let's get a little perspective, shall we? Corsair's Force Series 3 SSD -- a wholly awesome product in its own right -- is capable of hitting around 85,000 IOPS. On a good day. Fusion-io has been pushing the NAND storage envelope for years now, but even its recently-unveiled ioDrives deliver between 700,000 and 900,000 IOPS. Today, however, the company's pausing to pat itself squarely on the back -- and rightfully so. It managed to achieve one billion input and output operations per second in a technology demonstration conducted at DEMO Enterprise: An Evening of Innovation.

We're told that it was during a preview of the company's latency reducing Auto Commit Memory (ACM) extension, part of the Fusion ioMemory subsystem, and that it's "rethinking how to provide powerful modern CPUs with the data they need through sophisticated software architectures." The demo utilized eight HP ProLiant DL370 servers, each equipped with eight ioDrive2 Duos, to break the one billion IOP barrier when transferring 64 byte data packets. 'Course, that'd probably cost you a few dozen years of work if you were to buy such a setup yourself, but hey -- at least someone's working to eliminate the mechanical drive sooner rather than later, right?

Just when it seems like everyone is running away from the PC business, well known HDTV company Vizio has apparently decided that after dabbling in lightbulbs, it's a great time to get in. Chief Technology Officer Matt McRae revealed in an interview with Bloomberg that it will introduce two desktop all-in-ones and three notebooks at CES next week, the former which probably explain that sleek display it flashed during its 2012 Rose Bowl advertisement. As usual, the focus is on value pricing, as he promised they would arrive by June (we're still waiting on the phone from last year, we'll chalk up the missing high end TVs to Google TV delays for now) at prices that "don't seem possible". The desktops are expected to be 24- and 27-inch models, while the laptops are a standard 15-incher, along with 14- and 15-inch ultralight models. We'll get our hands on the new PCs as quickly as possible to see if they match up to the ultrabook competition, and if Vizio can finally provide a PC AIO we're truly interested in.

Update: Check the gallery below for actual pictures of all the models in the lineup (24-inch All-in-One PC, 27-inch All-in-One PC, 14-inch Thin + Light Notebook, 15.6-inch Thin + Light Notebook, 15.6-inch Notebook ), while we don't know how they'll run from here, they certainly have sleek -- and familiar -- designs. Also, if you think Vizio's forgotten its roots, think again (peep the wired subwoofer and remote idling by that 27-incher). Just like its Tablet featured universal IR control built-in, the tie-ins are getting deeper, according to comments in the Wall Street Journal there are plans to allow for second screen information on a laptop or PC on the same network as one of its smart TVs.

Vuzix has announced plans to develop a stylish head-mounted display solution in the form of Smart Glasses, through a licensing partnership with Nokia. The yet-unnamed product would integrate a bright, high-contrast display with a pair of seemingly ordinary-looking sunglasses -- sounds like a perfect companion to the ZionEyez in-glasses camera prototype we saw last month. In Vuzix's words:

This amazing new technology starts with a compact display engine capable of hi contrast and brightness for outdoor use. The output is then relayed into a 1.4 mm thick plastic waveguide lens with input and output hologram structures on the surface which squeezes the light down the waveguide and then two dimensionally expands the image back into the user's eye, creating an image that is then mixed into the real world.

Naturally, the company envisions its Smart Glasses solution as a web-connected device, letting you watch videos or browse the internet while still being able to see-and-avoid pedestrians as you walk on the sidewalk or obstacles while behind the wheel -- try doing that with a Kindle or smartphone (better yet, please don't). Vuzix expects its Smart Glasses solution to start appearing as early as this summer, but we'll be getting an early look next week at CES.

We wouldn't be entirely shocked to see a handful of 3D tablets pop up at CES next week. In the meantime, however, Brando's got a pretty good hold on the market, with the clunkily-named GADMEI T863-3D Tablet. The Gingerbread slate offers up 3D images and video on its eight-inch display, without the need for glasses. You'll also get HDMI out, a microSD slot and a front-facing camera on the thing. With 512MB of RAM on-board, this $199 tablet won't be the quickest one around, but at least you'll be able to brag about being the first person on your block with a 3D slate, for whatever that's worth. Hackers successfully broke into an older version of an enterprise security product dubbed Symantec Antivirus, the company confirmed today.

The issue caused a panic on Thursday but by Friday, Symantec had sorted out which products were affected and claimed the risk was minimal to its millions of users.

The products involved were Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 and Symantec Antivirus 10.2, Symantec told SecurityWeek. While the company still supports them -- meaning there are enterprise customers that still use them -- the first product is four years old and Symantec Antivirus 10.2 has been discontinued.

A Symantec spokesperson told SecurityWeek that the products still work and have not been broken -- they didn't miss a virus, for example.

The hackers broke into servers run by Indian military intelligence, reports CNET, where they were able to read its source code and figure out how it works. However, this does not automatically mean that they can grab corporate data from it, even when it's being used by a customer.

At least the hackers did not get the products by breaking into Symantec's own network, as happened to security vendor RSA last summer.

You've likely seen the press photos for the LG Spectrum, but for those of you who've wondered what internals will power Big Red's latest slab, worry no more. This replacement for the Revolution will feature a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 SoC, along with a 4.5-inch, 1280 x 720 IPS display and an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash. The rear shooter is capable of recording video at 1080p, and there's also a 1.3 megapixel webcam up front. As you might've guessed, Ice Cream Sandwich will be nowhere in sight, but it'll feature Android 2.3 all the way. Rounding out the specs, users can expect 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and a 16GB microSD card. Like the Revolution, the Spectrum supports LTE on Verizon, although its 1830mAh battery is a significant upgrade over the 1500mAh forebear. According to internal documents, we can expect a January 19th arrival. For the serious stalker / commercial spy, the Black Swann includes expandable microSD storage (yup, up to 32GB). The latter two devices have a range of 110 feet and all three will fly for eight minutes on a single charge. Velocity Micro, has just peeled back the curtain on what it'll be parading next week in Vegas. First up is a pair of successors to its budget Cruz T408 tablet. The T507 Android 4.0 slate houses a Cortex-A8 1.2 GHz Processor and 512MB of RAM, which might not get palms sweating, but you will also get HDMI out, a front facing camera and 8GB of internal for your humble $150 MSRP. The T510 is a bigger sibling, but the specs remain largely the same, bar a rear camera and an extra 2.7" of screen to fondle.

Two more new releases come in the form of its top-end Xeon E5-2620 Hexa Core powered ProMagix HD6000 PC, which it claims is designed to outperform a Mac Pro, with 32GB DDR3-1600 RAM and an NIVIDIA Quadpro 4000 on-board to help it do that, and a sub $3,500 price tag. If the built-in 120GB SSD and 1TB 7200 RPM drive isn't enough, then you might be interested in the VMUltra Drive which is a simple 500GB external drive, with a few USB ports added in for spice.

Last up is the 1280x768, pocket friendly Shine projector. Sporting HDMI and a 1.4:1 throw ratio, ideal for small spaces. Full specs in the PR after the break, but sadly no word on availability.

When Apple Orchards Become Personal Power Plants Any stroll through a grade school science fair proves that potatoes are a simple source of electricity. But did you know that enough apples, about 300, can power an LED lamp? Time to get planting!

This remarkable image was taken by photographer Caleb Charland, who found that it only took about 10 apples, wired in series, to power each of the 30 LEDs in this lamp he built.

Interestingly enough, the evening he took this photo he had to scare off a herd of deer hoping to feed on the fruit—for the entire four hours it took to capture this long exposure shot. So in other words, the glowing results pictured are probably not indicative of how bright the lamp actually was. Now what the heck am I going to do with all these apples? Intel's newfangled Atom range isn't even a month old, but already MSI is putting it to good use. The company's Wind netbook range is seeing a new addition today in Germany, where the Wind U180 is up for pre-order on a host of sites. According to a product listing at Notebook.de, the 10.1-inch machine will ship with a 1,024 x 600 native resolution, 1.86GHz dual-core Atom N2800, a gig of memory, 320GB hard drive, GMA 3650 integrated graphics, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, an Ethernet port and a 0.3 megapixel webcam. You'll also get a token chiclet keyboard, a built-in SD / MMC card reader, a six-cell battery and Windows 7 Starter running the show. €349 (around $451) gets you in the door, but there's no telling when it'll actually ship. Here's hoping we get a better idea from the show floor in just a few days, eh?

In one announcement, AT&T has nearly doubled its LTE coverage by officially flipping the switch on eleven new markets. The list of cities includes New York City metro, San Francisco / Oakland / San Jose, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, Raleigh and Austin. We've seen the service flicker on and off in most of these cities as real-life tests were conducted, and the high-speed connection's also been available in certain parts of New York, but it's great to see these become official. AT&T also declared that LTE expansion should be complete by the end of 2013, though we expect most major cities to be hit far earlier. Check out the full press release for more details.

Another camera has snuck out to delight us ahead of CES and it's another tempting chunk of camera. Canon's new flagship compact, the Powershot G1X packs a 14.3 megapixel sensor alongside a 28-112mm lens capable of f/2.5. The compact will apparently be capable of RAW photo output, 1080p video capture. It will also manage more advanced features like we've seen on the PowerShot series' S100, like multi-area white balance, while you can also expect high-speed burst shooting at full resolution. What we don't know is what the G1X will look like. Will follow the wolf-in-sheep's-clothing looks of the S95 and S100 or go for something a little more... dynamic? Expect to see more on this in just a few days.

When describing the current fleet of BD burners on the market, one word that certainly doesn't come to mind -- sleek. Pioneer is aiming to change all that, though, with the BDR-XD04. What it lacks in a catchy name it makes up for with a slim and light clamshell design that doesn't make too many sacrifices in the features department. At just under 8.5oz and 0.55 inches thick, it puts most of its competitors to shame. Now, it settles for just a 6x write speed and skips USB 3.0 in favor of the more common (and slower) 2.0, but it is capable of drawing power entirely from your machines peripheral ports. (Though, you'll have the option of hooking up an AC adapter if you wish.) And don't worry about format support -- the BDR-XD04 will handle everything from quad-layer 128GB BD-Rs to old-school CDs with aplomb. And then there was... one? BGR is reporting that the folks at Research in Motion have not only scrapped plans for the BlackBerry Colt, originally expected to be the first BlackBerry 10 superphone out of the gate, but the rumored Milan as well (which was also reported by N4BB). If true, this would leave the BlackBerry London as the one and only QNX-based device in the works, suggesting RIM is taking a huge gamble by putting all of its eggs in one basket when it launches the new OS later this year. Additionally, the site reports that the London will have a slightly different design from the prototype leaked a couple months ago, and that the Milan wasn't actually a BlackBerry 10 device at all, but instead was supposed to run OS 7. Remember this is all according to "people familiar with the matter," which means the rumor is completely unconfirmed at this time.

But if you're oh-so-important enough to be toting around more than one phone on more than one carrier, you might want to stop, drop (some dough) and TAP -- as the company's latest smartphone is known. This sixth in a line of dual-SIM offerings is the outfit's first to offer touchscreen functionality and packs a quadband GSM radio that should make your globe- and frequency-hopping a little more efficient. No pricing or release details have yet been announced, but if you're really keen to wield this handset, you can just leave all of that tedious busywork to your office-locked assistant. The world of home automation is one full of disparate, fragmented pieces often requiring high-dollar contractors with trucks full of adapters. Motorola's been trying to streamline that with its 4Home standard and the company's latest attempt at smarthome synchronicity has just been unveiled. It's called the Connected Home Gateway and it looks like your average wireless router, but it's actually much more than that -- according to Moto's press release, anyway, which promises the thing can easily tie together home security, automation and climate control into a single, petite box. Once harmonized, the whole package is said to be easily accessible from a mobile device, something that might help homeowners relax a bit more while on vacation -- or while covering a major convention in Las Vegas. We're still lacking a lot of details here (like, how exactly do all these devices connect to the thing) but we'll try to get a demo and more details as soon as possible.
