drag2share: New Mac Trojan Earns Other People Bitcoins on Your Dime [Apple]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5855061/new-mac-trojan-earns-other-peoples-bitcoins-on-your-dime

New Mac Trojan Earns Other People Bitcoins on Your DimeOdd, I could have sworn Bitcoin was on the fast track towards technological irrelevance. So why is this new Mac malware harnessing infected GPUs to mine the digital dollars?

Dubbed DevilRobber, the OSX/Miner-D application is technically spyware but employs a combination of Trojan, backdoor, and sniffer elements. It's spread over BitTorrent networks under the guise of innocuous applications. Once installed, it opens ports on the infected computer and steals personal information as well as turning your graphics processor to its own nefarious purposes. The sneaky bastard will even heist any Bitcoins you have on your system as well. Security experts warn that the most obvious symptom is drastically reduced system speed, so check for updates to your virus definition lists as most most Mac AV vendors have reportedly already patched the vulnerability.

The emergence of this sort of malware shouldn't come as a surprise. Bitcoin-thieving virii for Windows have been around for nearly as long as Bitcoin itself. Between that and the police raids, Bitcoin's quickly becoming more trouble than it's worth. [PC Magazine]

drag2share: The iPhone Could Be Getting a Native Gmail App [IPhone]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5855159/the-iphone-could-be-getting-a-native-gmail-app

The iPhone Could Be Getting a Native Gmail AppAccording to MG Siegler, Google has submitted an official Gmail app to the iOS App Store for approval, which would finally bring some of Gmail's more awesome features to iPhone (and hopefully iPad) users.

If the speculation is true, the app will allow Gmail push functionality without having to run your account through Exchange (like you have to in Apple's own mail app), along with other deeply-integrated features.

The native Gmail app will likely bring other key functionality as well: like Priority Inbox and one-click starring of messages. Other possibilities include some of the stuff Google is about to roll out for Gmail proper: like contact icons, better threading, and deep searching functionality. Maybe there will even be some Google+ integration, which Google is also hard at work on for Gmail.

Hopefully it looks nicer than the Google Voice app, and while they're at it, can't they just toss us a full-functioning Google Talk app as well? [parislemon]

drag2share: Varley's evR450 all-electric supercar set to hit Australian roads next year

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/31/varleys-evr450-all-electric-supercar-set-to-hit-australian-road/

As Autoblog Green points out, Australia's Varley Electric Vehicles is known more for bulky industrial vehicles than high-end sports cars, but the company's now looking to change that perception with its new all-electric evR450 supercar. While it'll no doubt turn a few heads simply standing still, it also looks to measure up reasonably well under the hood, boasting a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour (or 124 MPH) and a zero to 100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds. The company's also promising a range of 150 kilometers (or 93 miles) that can be doubled with an optional range-extension pack, although its not letting anyone actually drive the car just yet (or even look under the hood, for that matter). As for a price, Varley's saying that the base package will come in "below" $200,000 Australian dollars (or about $213,000 US), and it says it could roll out "as early as January 2012."

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/31/dell-streak-gets-disa-approval-androids-look-to-pentagon-invasi/

Android conspiracy theories? They go all the way to the top -- or will soon, thanks to the US Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). The department has given the green light to use Dell's Mobile Security for Android platform on defense networks. The testing process utilized the Dell Streak, because apparently being giant is an important part of national security.

drag2share: Acer outs AZ3, AZ5, Veriton Z Series all-in-ones, starting at $650

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/01/acer-outs-az3-az5-veriton-z-series-all-in-ones-starting-at-6/

Not wanting to be left behind by the AIO hordes, Acer has unveiled a trio of new options for your spick and span desktop. The higher-end AZ5 provides a 23-inch expanse of full HD, multi-touch glory, a minimum Core i3-2120 processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory and a 1TB HDD, all for the sum of $750. Next up is the AZ3, which saves you $100 by cutting the screen size to 21 inches, switching to an AMD dual-core A4 APU (along with a discreet Radeon HD6410) and slimming the HDD down to 500GB. Both models come with an adjustable stand, two side-mounted USB 3.0 ports (plus four USB 2.0 ports on the rear) and a built-in webcam and mic. Meanwhile, Acer's new Veriton all-in-ones target enterprise users who are prepared to sacrifice those high-def media credentials in favor of better performance and a smaller, more office-friendly footprint -- the 20-inch Z2620G, for instance, packs a Core i5-2400s quad-core processor and NVIDIA GeFore GT 520M GPU for $850. All the new models are available in densely populated areas as of right now, and you'll find more details in the PR after the break.

drag2share: BMW 3 Series gets 'full-color' heads-up display

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/01/bmw-3-series-gets-full-color-heads-up-display/

If you've been hankering for some HUD action in your next auto, you'll have one more choice come next spring: the all-new 2012 BMW 3 Series. The launch will mark the first time a heads-up display has made it into Bavaria's volume seller, after debuting as an optional extra eons ago on its 5 Series. Since then, HUDs of limited hues have permeated München's high-end, splaying speed and navigation directions in the line of sight of road-going elites everywhere. However, this iteration is "full-color," which besides pleasing ROY G. BIV fans, makes it "more intuitive," as the company reasons it'll aid drivers in recognizing crucial alerts faster. That, or we're really just a generation away from über cool AR wizardry and movies on our windscreens. Of course, no word on when the 3's brethren will get the technicolor treatment, but we're betting it won't be long, given that's the dash of a 6 Series you see above. PR, per usual, is after the break.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/01/novatel-celebrates-sale-of-3-millionth-mifi-intelligent-mobile-h/

Today marks a momentous occasion for Novatel Wireless, because shipments of its MiFi Intelligent Mobile Hotspot have now surpassed the 3 million mark. The company confirmed the milestone in an announcement yesterday, and took a moment to look back on how far their router has come since it was first introduced in 2009. Since then, Novatel has launched its family of MiFi devices with 25 operators across the world and is looking to build upon its record. For now, though, just grab a bottle of bubbly and join the PR party, after the break.

drag2share: Scientists Can Make Bomb Detectors with Inkjet Printers [Genius]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5854840/scientists-can-make-bomb-detectors-with-inkjet-printers

Scientists Can Make Bomb Detectors with Inkjet PrintersWhen properly designed, explosives detection sensors are really expensive. But researchers at Georgia Tech have developed a cheap, ammonia-detecting sensor that can be manufactured with an inkjet printer and some paper.

According to Gizmag, the key ingredient are silver nanopartibles, which are transformed into carbon nanotubes which attract ammonia (a component of explosives) in trace amounts.

The ink consists of silver nanoparticles held in an emulsion that can be passed through an ink-jet printer at a temperature of only 212 F (100 C). This ink is treated with ultrasonic waves in a process known as sonification, which alters the viscosity and makes the ink more homogeneous for greater effectiveness. As it sets, the ink forms into nanoscale cylinders called nanotubes.

And what makes the technology even more alluring besides being extremely cheap to produce, is that it can be calibrated to detect other types of gasses and can be built into RF or other wireless technologies (meaning it can automatically send alerts). But still being a prototype, it may still be a few years before anyone sees this invention in action. [Gizmag]

Google TV 2.0 Update Now Rolling Out To DevicesThe huge Google TV 2.0 update we reported last week is being pushed out to devices across the land. Sony internet TVs and boxes have already gotten the update. Expect it for Logitech very soon.

Google TV 2.0 holds a lot of promise even if the first iteration was something of a disappointment. The update brings Android Apps to Google TV as well as an improved UI and "living-room friendly" viewing for YouTube. Fingers crossed. [Google TV via Android Central and TechCrunch]

drag2share: AT&T to expand 4G coverage and launch first LTE smartphones November 6th: HTC Vivid, Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/31/atandt-brings-its-first-lte-smartphones-to-life-htc-vivid-and-sam/

Well hello gorgeous -- both of you! AT&T's starting to catch the LTE fever, as the carrier's announced that its first two devices with the true 4G will be ready to grab as of this upcoming Sunday. First we have the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket: the long-rumored device can be yours for $250 with a two-year commitment and will offer a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, Android 2.3.5, 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 8MP rear camera with a 2MP front-facing cam and 16GB of internal storage space. Next up is the HTC Vivid (Holiday), which will be offered in both black and white for $200 and appears to match the specs leaked to us a couple months ago: it uses a 4.5-inch qHD (960 x 540) display, 1.2GHz CPU, 8MP rear camera with f/2.2 28mm wide angle lens and 1080p HD video recording. What about the "4G" branding? Contrary to the carrier's HSPA+ devices, neither device will have LTE or 4G as part of their official name. Both phones will be reverse compatible with AT&T's HSPA+ network, in case you're not using the phone in an LTE-capable area; speaking of which, AT&T also announced that the November 6th launch will also bring four additional markets live, including Boston, Washington DC, Baltimore and Athens GA. Data plans for AT&T's LTE smartphones will remain the same, with $15 getting you 200MB per month, 2GB going for $25 and 4GB with mobile hotspot connectivity for $45. Check below for a press gallery and the full press release.

drag2share: HTC Rezound ad pays Verizon stores an early visit, soonish launch likely

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/31/htc-rezound-ad-pays-verizon-stores-an-early-visit-soonish-launc/

The above image isn't a leak -- it's a dye-in-the-wool, true-blue LTE poster that a few Verizon stores have preemptively hung up. We're pretty sure these adverts aren't supposed to be displayed for our eyes to see since they feature the HTC Rezound, a forthcoming 4G device that hasn't even been announced yet. Oops. Additionally, the handset -- featured front and center on the ad -- shows off a pair of Beats headphones dangling out of its 3.5mm jack. Are there any naysayers that still think the Rezound won't get its official outing at HTC's event this week? Count us amongst the believers.

drag2share: AMD Bulldozer breaks own world record, overclocked to 8.46GHz

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/31/amd-bulldozer-breaks-own-world-record-overclocked-to-8-46ghz/

Advanced Micro Devices is probably feeling a bit silly right about now. To show off how powerful the Bulldozer chip really is, it drafted in the world's most elite overclockers, set them up in a room with whatever was required (including a vat of liquid helium) and broke the chip-speed world record. With a verified speed of 8.429GHz, the company collected its Guinness world record and sat back, thinking that no one could ever best it. Less than two months later and Andre Yang (who we can assume does not have his own military complex to run his experiments in) managed to get his Bulldozer running at 8.46GHz, 30MHz faster than the chip's own parent could manage. We wouldn't dare suggest that anyone stand outside AMD's Sunnyvale HQ whilst playing the sad trombone -- but if anyone deserves that chance, it'd certainly be Mr. Yang.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/31/faro-focus-3d-scanner-captures-big-3d-models-from-a-tiny-lego-tr/

Nothing catches our collective eye quite as easily as the combination of high technology and childhood toys. Making a play for our man-childhood inclinations today is a Lego-augmented FARO Focus 3D, purportedly the world's smallest 3D laser scanner yet still able to detect surroundings up to 120 metres away. It can grab a cloud of points, then offer up a detailed three-dimensional model of the environment, with some extra details (thanks to those Lego wheels) that would have been obscured on a static 3D capture. Admittedly, it doesn't quite have the wow-factor of an all-Lego 3D scanner, but its range (and possible use in forensic crime scene analysis) has kept us intrigued. Check out the video after the break to investigate how you could get your CSI on.
