drag2share: Imagination Technologies unveils G6200 and G6400, first two GPUs based on PowerVR Series6

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/powervr-series6-g6200-and-6400/

First announced in February of last year, Imagination Technologies has officially announced the licensing availability of its first two GPUs based on the Series6 platform. The PowerVR G6200 and G6400 each promise to bring low power graphics to unprecedented levels and are said to deliver up to 20 times more horsepower than the current generation while also being five times more efficient. In tangible terms, the Series6 GPU cores are capable of exceeding 100 gigaflops and are said to approach the teraflop range. All chipsets based on Series6 are backward compatible with Series5 and fully support OpenGL 3.x, 4.x and ES, along with OpenCL 1.x and DirectX 10. Further, specific models will also support DirectX 11.1 with full WHQL compliance. Poised to shake up the mobile gaming ecosystem, Imagination has already lined up partners that include ST-Ericsson, Texas Instruments, Renesas Electronics and MediaTek. The full PR, complete with all the bragging, can be found after the break.

drag2share: Watch This Street Artist Put Bob Ross to Shame in Less Than Three Minutes [Video]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5874680/watch-this-master-artist-put-bob-ross-to-shame-in-under-three-minutes

The Joy of Painting is a wonderful program—assuming you can get past the Afro and not doze off. But, if you don't have an hour to learn to paint "happy trees," check out street artist Fabian Gaete Maureira compose scenes like Bob Ross on crank.

Maureira works in Santiago, Chile, using primarily his fingers to speed-paint nature scenes on glass panes. According his display, each piece is completed in just about three minutes. I have no idea how he gets trees to appear like that but you can see more of his work at Arte100cia. [Arte100cia via Reddit].

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5874654/watch-the-new-crazy-thin-gorilla-glass-2-somehow-survive-121-pounds-of-pressure

Gorilla Glass 2 is just as strong, tough and impressive as the original Gorilla Glass. Only difference? Gorilla Glass 2 is waaaaaaaay thinner at only .8mm compared to the original Gorilla Glass at 1mm. And at that size, 20% is a big freaking deal. Nothing currently has Gorilla Glass 2 but you can be sure even more anorexic thin gadgets are on their way. Thin is in, right?

drag2share: Before and After: New Island Appears In The Red Sea Almost Overnight [Science]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5874726/before-and-after-new-volcanic-island-appears-in-the-red-sea-almost-overnight

Before and After: New Island Appears In The Red Sea Almost OvernightA new volcanic island has appeared in the Red Sea almost overnight. The eruption was first reported by local fishermen in mid-December 2011, 40 miles off the coast of Yemen. This before and after animated GIF shows the before and after.

The second image was taken on January 7, 2012 by the Advanced Land Imager on the Earth Observing-1 satellite. It shows the island well above the sea's surface and still growing while a plume of steam from the water and other volcanic gases are blown by the wind.

According to NASA, the land is "now about 530 by 710 meters (1,700 by 2,300 feet) across."

drag2share: Vizio's New Ultrawidescreen TVs Have True Cinema Aspect Ratio and Tons of Pixels [TVs]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5874734/ultrawidescreen-3d-and-google-tv-from-vizio-theyre-on-a-roll

Vizio's New Ultrawidescreen TVs Have True Cinema Aspect Ratio and Tons of PixelsVizio is tearing up CES with its new PCs and 10-inch tablet. But it's also announced some new TVs which look pretty sweet, too.

The new 65-inch versions of both Vizio's M- and R- lines feature VIA Plus — the company's customized spin on Google TV. And after some delays last year, it's also offering up three 21:9 "CinemaWide" ultrawidescreen WFHD (2560x1080) models, like that pictured above. They come in sizes of 50-, 58- and 71-inches with 3D and Yahoo! Widgets, bringing the 21:9 aspect ratio to US shores for the first time.

Vizio's current E3D series will also be joined by the M3D series in a 47- and 55-inch model, the latter of which includes a Bluetooth QWERTY remote. There's also going to be an R3D series, which comes with better backlighting.

Prices and ship dates for all the new TVs are still under wraps, but we should be taking a look at these in the flesh real soon. [Vizio]

drag2share: Qualcomm's Quad-Core TV Processors Could Deliver Console Quality GamingâWithout the Console [Guts]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5874789/qualcomm-puts-a-quad+core-processor-in-a-tv-and-other-home+of+the+future-madness

Qualcomm's Quad-Core TV Processors Could Deliver Console Quality Gamingâ€Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors have been a hallmark of mobile devices for the past few years. Not content with keeping the party in your pockets, the Snapdragon is coming to your TV, to the tune of 1.5GHz quad-core processor mightiness.

In addition to those four-cores, the Snapdragon S4 MPQ8064 also has Adreno 320 graphics. So, basically we're talking about console-quality gaming, potentially, without the console. The S4 supports 1080p 3D and Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound. The architecture is built to work with Android, which means we're likely to see these integrated with Google TV. We've seen a rash of Google TV products lately from LG, Sony, and most recently Vizio, and Android games have been taking great leaps and bounds lately. The idea of my TV (or streaming box, or Blu-Ray player) having the power to run that gives me the geek-vapors.

UPDATE: Lenovo just showed off the aforementioned TV, which is running a version of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and it did, indeed, look pretty impressive. The voice recognition seemed to work pretty well, despite the speaker's fairly thick accent, and the racing game they played looked great. Unfortunately it's looking like this first iteration is going to be China-only, but hopefully we'll get some similar goodness stateside in the near future. We'll update again if we get some hands-on time.

drag2share: LG's Massive 84-Inch Ultradefinition TV Won't Fit In My Anything [Televisions]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5874802/massive-84-inch-ultradefinition-tv-wont-fit-in-my-anything

LG's Massive 84-Inch Ultradefinition TV Won't Fit In My AnythingIf you want to get a sense of just how massive LG Display's new 84-inch Ultradefinition 3DTV is, check out this shot. That tiny-looking TV on the left? It's a ridiculously big 60 inches, dwarfed by LG's 4K monster.

Are you very rich? Is your home very large? You are totally going to want the 84-inch, 3480 x 2160 ultradef TV. The picture quality is stunning. 3D effects jump out at you like on a movie screen. (In fact, they looked better than most movies I've seen.)

But you'll need to have it delivered because you are totally not fitting that thing in your car. Or your truck. Hell, I couldn't even fit this ostentatious beast in my apartment. But hey, you just bought an 84-inch TV with the highest resolution available, big spender. (When it comes to market, that is.) You can't spring for movers? What's wrong with you?

drag2share: Roku Streaming Stick hands-on

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/roku-streaming-stick-hands-on/

The device that put MHL on the map for most every non-smartphone user was live and in person at CES, and just as you might have surmised from the renders, the Roku Streaming Stick looks like a little dongle with Roku tag on it and adds the over-the-top greatness to any MHL display. Shiny, and just as prone to finger prints as any piano glass finished product, the thickness of the device makes us wonder if it'll clear the MHL compatible HDMI port of the thinnest of HDTVs -- hopefully a small HDMI extender will be bundled in.

drag2share: Intel takes heat for 'misleading' Ultrabook demo at CES (video)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/intel-takes-heat-for-misleading-ultrabook-demo-at-ces-video/

Intel's reinvigorated Ultrabook campaign got off to a bit of a rocky start at CES yesterday, during a demo at its press conference. It all began when Intel's Mooley Eden took the stage to demonstrate the Ivy Bridge processors behind his company's forthcoming line of super-slim laptops. To do this, Eden decided to play a Codemasters game called F1 2011. At the time, it appeared that Eden was playing the game live, but as Bright Side of News editor Anshel Sag noticed, that probably wasn't the case. As you can see in the very beginning of the video (after the break), Moody instead ran a video file from VLC media player. Sag was quick to criticize Intel for misleading the audience with a pre-recorded demo, though it's worth noting that at one point, the exec made a joke about driving the game with one hand, and with no hands at all. It's still not clear, however, whether this was meant as a disclaimer. Head past the break to watch the clip for yourself.

drag2share: Telus announces Samsung Galaxy Note launch, LTE in Q1

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/telus-announces-samsung-galaxy-note-launch-lte-in-q1/

Well here's some pretty fab news: the Samsung Galaxy Note is en route to Canada and that network will boast LTE sometime this quarter. The LTE launch alone gives us tingles up our spines, but coupled with this useful little handset, we're overjoyed. Telus, however, didn't provide any information on the exact date of the Note's launch nor even a hint of what it might cost, but we'd expect that'll come tumbling our way soon. In the interim, have a peek at the press info, our hands-on and give our first impressions a read, won't you?

drag2share: Samsung 2012 SmartTVs will access DirecTV without a set top box, minimalists rejoice

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/samsung-smart-tv-directv-without-stb/

Samsung's new range of super-thin, super-powerful Smart TVs got another big fillip at CES: the company's teamed up with DirecTV to offer its service without the use of a set top box. Hook up your TV to the connection and a STB server will replicate the full user interface, including being able to record five shows at once, live pause TV and access DVR content. The TVs will be available in Spring, but there's no mention on if the additional functionality will mean an increase on your subscription. Deep dish is after the break.

drag2share: Intel inks licensing agreement with Plessey Semiconductors, gets into the sensor game

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/intel-inks-licensing-agreement-with-plessey-semiconductors-gets/

Intel signed a licensing agreement with Plessey Semiconductors today, giving it access to the UK chipmaker's array of sensors. Founded in 1957, Plessey produces cell phone radios, motion sensors and a host of other chips. The company also licensed its wireless LAN chipset to Apple back in 1994 and, in 1992, became the first licensee of ARM's architecture. Under the deal, Intel will receive the option to buy a financial security in Plessey at a later date, while Plessey, in turn, will be able to support a limited number of Intel's digital tuner products. It remains to be seen what Intel has in store with its new sensor licenses, but we're certainly looking forward to it.

Viewsonic has welcomed another member to the ViewPad family, with the ViewPad e70 -- a seven-inch Android slate that comes drenched in Ice Cream Sandwich. Announced at CES today, the e70 is powered by a 1GHz CPU and comes packed with 4GB of memory. The WiFi-enabled slate also supports 1080p HDMI output and sports a front-facing camera, though specifications like screen resolution and megapixel count remain a mystery. Perhaps most compelling is its $170 price point, though Viewsonic has yet to announce a launch date more specific than "Q1." It'll be available for $75 in April from the company's store and... oh look, there's a press-release down here after the break, wanna come see?
