Want to record those epic Modern Warfare shootouts, but don't want to impede your lightning fast reloads? Diamond Multimedia thinks its new GC1000 is just the box you're looking for. The USB HDMI video capture device promises to let you preserve, share (via YouTube and Facebook) and edit your finest gaming moments in 1080i with zero lag, thanks to its video pass-through capability. There's also the GC500, which Diamond refers to as a "lite" version of the GC1000. The main difference, it seems, being the lack of HDMI (both do composite and s-video also). If you're jonesing for the full-fat version, then you can lay down $140 for one from today. Don't need HDMI? Then you'll save yourself $70. Scan the PR after the break for retailers.

It's been a few years now that Toshiba's been making external hard drives, so it makes sense that the company would want to venture into larger disks as a next step. Indeed, the company just took the wraps off Canvio Personal Cloud, its first network-attached storage product. The drive itself will be offered in two flavors -- 2TB and 3TB -- but the hook, of course, is that you can use various apps to upload your files and then access them remotely. These applications include desktop software, as well as mobile apps for iOS and Android. In either case, the applications are designed to upload music, video, photos and documents, and all of this content is searchable by date and other filters. The drive will be available sometime next month, starting at $220 for the 2TB version and going up to $250 for 3TB. If you're curious, we've got hands-on photos of the UI past the break.

Haier's 46-inch transparent display shows up at IFA, we go eyes-on (video)

After last year's awesome mind-controlled and small transparent television, we made naturally a beeline to the Haier booth on the floor of this year's IFA. While it wasn't yet fully unpacked, we were still pretty impressed with what we saw. The first stop on the visit: this year's version of the transparent TV prototype. So, how's it different than its predecessor? For one thing, it's a lot bigger. At 46-inches, this set feels a lot less like a toy. In fact, it's actually intended for retail usage, and as such, the company had it set up in front a group of mannequins showing off the fashions of Kaska Hass. You can see them quite well through the other wise of the set in the videos and images.

The display is connected to a Windows PC at the moment, a tower visible in a nook below the set. You can use touch to control the interface -- it's capable of detecting up to six touch points at once. We used the display to open Quicktime and launch a video, playing, not surprisingly, some footage of Kaska Hass fashion shows. The touch was fairly responsive, the image, on the other hand, is quite dark and not particularly hi-res, particularly when surround by a booth of much nicer sets.

Again, keep in mind, this isn't intended to be a consumer technology -- at least not for the time being, and retailers may well not be quite as picky as people sitting in their living room -- and, like a lot of the more forward thinking products, it's not quite ready for! prime t ime. Still, you can check out a video of what we saw after the break.

Been holding out on that Kindle Fire purchase because you just can't wean yourself off the eye-friendly e-ink? Well, this patent application from the folk at Amazon suggests this is something they're not unaware of. The patent outlines a device incorporating two or more displays, one being static in nature (a-la e-ink) and the other more suitable for video (that'd be LCD or OLED etc). If you're thinking this sounds like a fast route to flat-battery town, the patent argues to the contrary. The static display would save power by offloading the workload from the LCD, when its slow moving nature was more suitable to the content. Will we see something like this popping up next week? One can dream.

First Samsung Windows 8 Touch Laptop Is Cheaper Than You'd ExpectSamsung's new Series 5 Ultra laptop doesn't look like anything special. But that's the whole point—it's for people not looking for anything too out of the ordinary, in terms of both specs and price.

The Series 5 Ultra is pretty much the same computer as the existing Series 5—just now with a touch panel. It seems strange that Samsung opted to give its mid-tier laptop touch powers instead of its flagship Series 9. But it could make sense to just get regular people used to using touchscreens with the regular old computers they buy.

The Series 5 has a 1366x768 display, 10-point capacitive touch, i3 and i5 Ivy Bridge processors, and 4GB of RAM. It has a 500GB HDD, with a 24GB SSD ExpressCache. The laptop weighs 3.83 pounds, which isn't too much heavier than the 3.35 of the old Series 5.

Why isn't this in the totally gorgeous Series 9? Cost, and thinness. The Series 9 was already so thin that it had to sacrifice some of the keyboard travel distance that made the first version so good; adding the thickness and weight of a touchscreen—not to mention the cost to an already-expensive machine—would have been too much, at least for now.

The Series 5 Ultra will cost between $800 and $850 in its two configurations.
