drag2share: Toshiba introduces tiny enterprise hard drives with big speed and big storage

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/toshiba-introduces-tiny-enterprise-hard-drives-with-big-speed-an/

HDDYou're probably laughing to yourself right now saying, "300GB? That's not big storage." But, hear us out. The oh-so memorably titled MK01GRRB and MK01GRRR are not your standard hard drives -- these are enterprise-grade disks that spin at 15k RPM and fit in a 2.5-inch bay. Toshiba claims they're the highest capacity 2.5-inch, 15k drives on the market, and we couldn't dig up any evidence to the contrary. The 6Gb/s SAS connection makes sure businesses get the most they can out of those platters spinning at break neck speeds and the GRRR models include a self-encrypting feature. The two drives will start shipping in both 147 and 300GB sizes in Q1 of 2012, but pricing has yet to be announced. Check out the PR after the break for a few more details.

Update: Seagate wrote in to let us know that they had a similar drive at the same size, capacity and speed earlier this year. So, take that, Tosh.

The leaves in your yard may be transitioning to the more subdued hues of autumn, but Nokia's new 603 smartphone certainly isn't. Available in six different back cover colors, this new Symbian Belle handset is powered by a 1GHz processor and boasts a 3.5-inch, capacitive touchscreen with 640 x 360 resolution. It also comes with 2GB of internal memory, a 32GB microSD slot and five megapixel camera, along with full NFC and Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities. Speaking of which, the folks in Espoo have also taken this opportunity to unveil their new Luna Bluetooth headset -- an NFC-enabled, in-ear accessory that delivers up to eight hours of extended talk time, as well as a rainbow of colors (see an image after the break). As far as pricing goes, the 603 will set you back €200 (about $275), with the Luna headset sitting at €70 (around $96). Neither will hit the market until Q4 of this year, but you can find more information in the full PR, looming after the break.

drag2share: Samsung confirms Ice Cream Sandwich event on October 19

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/samsung-confirms-ice-cream-sandwich-event-on-october-19/

Just like we'd heard, we'll be getting our first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich next week, on October 19th to be precise. Of course we've already had a whiff of what it looks like in a video, and sampling the new Music and Google+ apps gave us another good look. But now we're set to see it for real, and if all goes well we might just get some new hardware out of the deal, too. Will this be the day the Nexus Prime makes us think that flat smartphones are... well... square? We'll be there live to let you know as it happens.

The event takes place 10:00am HKT, which is conveniently 10:00pm EST on October 18th. A primetime liveblog and gadget unveiling? Can't wait.

drag2share: Adobe shows off new 'undo photo blur' feature

Source: http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-10-adobe-undo-photo-blur-feature.html

(PhysOrg.com) -- Despite all the advances in digital photography, most people are still plagued by the problem of blurry photos, a problem compounded by the use of cameras embedded in cell phones due to their small size. Problems of blurring generally can be divided into two types. The first is problems with focusing, which can usually be avoided if the camera operator will simply wait for the automatic focusing feature of their camera to do its job. The second type is much more difficult to solve as it involves camera movement while the image is being shot. It’s this second problem that Adobe has been working on as part of its Photoshop imaging software package. And based on a video shot by someone identified only as peterelst who posted it on Youtube, a recent demo of a new feature, or "sneak" as Adobe calls it, seems to indicate that they have made significant progress.

drag2share: Skip Past the Boring Intro on YouTube Videos with the Wadsworth Constant Bookmarklet [Bookmarklets]

Source: http://lifehacker.com/5849342/skip-past-the-boring-intro-on-youtube-videos-with-the-wadsworth-constant-bookmarklet

Skip Past the Boring Intro on YouTube Videos with the Wadsworth Constant BookmarkletHave you ever watched a YouTube video and thought, "The first 40 seconds of this was completely unnecessary?" With a simple bookmarklet, you can jump right to the 40% mark in the video so you can get to the good stuff.

The Wadsworth Constant, for those of you that don't know, is a joke slash genius discovery made on Reddit by a user named Wadsworth, who noted that the first 30 percent of every YouTube video is unnecessary, and you can usually just skip 30% of the way in to get to what you're looking for. While the Wadsworth Constant has become a fast-spreading internet meme, Redditor PublicRestrom notes that YouTube has actually added a feature to the site that incorporates the constant:

To apply the Wadsworth Constant to any Youtube video, put &wadsworth=1 at the end of the URL.

Surprisingly, the trick works, and even more surprisingly, so does the Wadsworth Constant—at least in many cases. In an effort to streamline the process, we put together a bookmarklet that you can just click from any YouTube page to immediately skip to the 30% mark in the video. Just drag this link into your bookmarks bar and go nuts. The JavaScript, for those of you that are curious, is:

javascript:location.search+=(location.search?'&':'?')+'wadsworth=1'

Give it a try for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments.

And so an internet celebrity was born... | Reddit

drag2share: LG Optimus Slider on Virgin Mobile at CTIA E&A 2011, we go hands-on (video)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/lg-optimus-slider-on-virgin-mobile-at-ctia-eanda-2011-we-go-hands/

Curiously enough, the prepaid market had as much of a field day at this week's CTIA Enterprise & Applications as anyone else; we already got our fair share of hands-on time with the Samsung Transfix for Cricket, and shortly afterward beheld our eyes (and mandibles) on the LG Optimus Slider, the latest beauty making a beeline to Virgin Mobile as early as this coming Monday. Aside from the obvious slide-out QWERTY, the Android 2.3.4 device will feature a 3.2-inch HVGA display, a 3.2MP camera and microSD support up to 32GB, and will be available without a contract for $200. Head underneath to take a look at the full image gallery and hands-on video.

Zachary Lutz contributed to this hands-on.

drag2share: Apple reportedly trying to add movie streaming to its iCloud

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/apple-reportedly-trying-to-add-movie-streaming-to-its-icloud/

Apple's iCloud may have only just launched but according to rumors reported by the LA Times and Wall Street Journal, it's already negotiating with Hollywood to add movies to the service (funny how things have changed in five years.) The timing is particularly curious because Apple, along with Disney, is one of the notable holdouts from the movie studio-backed Ultraviolet scheme with similar buy once / stream anywhere aspirations that just hit the streets this week. However, according to "people familiar with the matter" it could allow Ultraviolet access on iThings via app, while also bringing its usual media lock-in magic by also throwing in streaming copies of any flicks purchased on iTunes, but only on its own hardware. Recently activated streaming of purchased TV shows to the Apple TV shows the cloud's potential, but we'll have to wait for deals to be signed before that North Carolina datacenter puts Hollywood's best on its to-do list.

drag2share: Photo Stream, NHL, AirPlay mirroring and more added to Apple TV with software update

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/12/photo-stream-nhl-airplay-mirroring-and-more-added-to-apple-tv/

It got a bit overshadowed by Apple's other software updates earlier today, but Apple TV users also have a few new features to enjoy whenever they're ready to plop down on the couch. Version 4.4 of the Apple TV software is now available to download, which adds the new Photo Stream feature to view photos stored in iCloud, as well as AirPlay mirroring, plus content from the NHL and Wall Street Journal, and a new movie trailer section. You'll also now be able to view subtitles in Netflix (when available, of course), and you have a few new slideshow themes to choose from.

drag2share: Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Amaze 4G on sale at T-Mobile

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/12/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-and-htc-amaze-4g-on-sale-at-t-mobile/

Sure, we knew this day was coming, but now the wait is finally over. Now the main question for T-Mobile customers at the end of their contract is whether to pick up the Samsung Galaxy S II or HTC Amaze 4G. Both handsets are now on sale from the carrier, running $229 and $259, respectively (plus plan, post-rebate, naturally). Thankfully, we've got a full review of the 4.52-inch Galaxy S II magenta edition and a hands-on with the 4.3-inch Amaze 4G, which should help make the deciding a bit easier.

drag2share: Monoprice Makes a $60 Subwoofer that Might Actually Be Worth a Damn [Audio]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5849108/monoprice-makes-a-60-subwoofer-that-might-actually-be-worth-a-damn

Monoprice Makes a $60 Subwoofer that Might Actually Be Worth a DamnMonoprice, a website generally associated with peddling A/V cables on the cheap, also makes audio components on the cheap. And in a space where audio gear costs as much as houses, cheap speakers are normally ignored. But Monoprice's subwoofer may be the exception.

Cnet's Steve Guttenberg says that Monoprice's line of subs are wholly respectable, especially given the sub-$100 pricetags: $57 will net you an 8-inch, 60-watt sub, while $84 will get you a 12-inch, 150-watt boomer. Overall, Guttenberg preferred the smaller sub as it had good bass definition, even if lacking in power (it only goes down to 50Hz). The bigger sub, in his words, sounded sloppy, but had decent power. But all in all, they provide a cheaper alternative to systems upwards of $300. [Monoprice via Cnet]

It's the iPod You Need, Not the One You Deserve: The White iPod Touch Is HereIf you've been chomping at the bit to get your grubby mitts all over the new white version of the iPod Touch, they're now available for purchase, or just poking, at Apple Retail Stores.

Announced at Apple's 'Let's Talk iPhone' event last week, the white version of the 4th generation iPod Touch doesn't bring a lot of new features to the table, save for that gleaming white visage. It does come with iOS 5 pre-installed, saving you the hassle of downloading it along with the rest of the world. And as a reminder, you're looking at $199 for the 8GB model, $299 for the 32GB and $399 for the 64GB. [iLounge via Cult of Mac]

drag2share: You Can Actually Turn Your DNA Into Houseware Decors [Design]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5849176/you-can-actually-turn-your-dna-into-houseware-decors

You Can Actually Turn Your DNA Into Houseware DecorsIt's one thing to put your own personal touch into the appearance of your home. But basing your household aesthetic around your own unique DNA signature takes that idea up more than a few notches.

DNA11 wants to take the visual representation of your DNA and print it up on rugs, bowls, prints, wallpapers and waterwalls. They currently have a full-blown campaign going to raise awareness for their project. If enough people vote in favor of any of these products, they will send it into production.

But it wont be cheap. Rugs will range between $1000 and $5000. The Waterwall starts at $10000. The other two...I shudder to think of the prices, but I still want all of it! [DNA11]

drag2share: Evolio's 2.2-pound U9 to drop softly in December

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/11/evolios-2-2-pound-u9-to-drop-softly-in-december/

We hadn't heard all that much about Evolio until this summer, when the Romanian company caught our attention with the Neura, a device it happily deemed the "most powerful Android tablet." The company has re-entered the scene with another bold claim, touting "the lightest notebook in the world." The 11.6-inch U9 is certainly on the smaller side of things, weighing in at around 2.2 pounds. Inside you'll find some rather netbooky specs, including a 1.6GHz Cedarview processor, 2GB of RAM and an SSD with either 64 or 128GB of storage. According to Evolio, the U9 is set for a December release.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/11/the-very-light-very-electric-very-efficient-edison2-evlc-score/

Edison2 eVLC
After winning the X-Prize, Edison2 decided the next logical step for its Very Light Car was to put an electric engine in it. Well, what is now known as the eVLC has been put through the EPA-certified ringer and come out boasting a jaw-dropping 245MPGe. Using the latest, more stringent, 5-cycle EPA tests the strange looking vehicle posted a miles-per-gallon equivalent almost 250-percent that of the Nissan leaf. The four-passenger eVLC also scored an impressive 114 mile range on its tiny 10.5 kWh battery (the Leaf gets 117 miles out of its 24 kWH battery) and sucked down a full charge in six hours from a standard 110v socket. For a few more details check out the PR after the break.
