drag2share: 4 iPhones + 1 Apple TV = Awesome Split-Screen Multiplayer Gaming [Video]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5847609/4-iphones-%252B-1-apple-tv--awesome-split+screen-multiplayer-gaming

Firemint, the developer behind Real Racing 2 on the iPhone/iPad, has a demo video to show off a neat multi-player trick using the Apple TV and the AirPlay mirroring feature for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2: 4-player split-screen.

It's called Party Play. Essentially, one player hosts a local multiplayer game, and pushes their screen to the Apple TV. Instead of just seeing their screen, everyone's screens pop up. Awesome. [Kotaku]

drag2share: Producer Makes Insane Real-Time Beats With New iMaschine App [Video]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5847598/producer-makes-insane-real+time-beats-with-new-imaschine-app

Jamie Lidell is a seriously talented and internationally known musician and producer, but the music he's able to make using only this iPhone app is crazy. This cannot possibly be real. The subway just got way more fun.

The new iMaschine app for iPhone and iPod Touch just dropped in the app store, and if this newly-released promo video is any indication it's one of the most functional production apps out there. The app is actually based on the Maschine sequencer hardware/software combination by Native Instruments. That might explain why Jamie Lidell looks like he's actually pounding away at the pads on a sequencer instead of playing with an app.

The iMaschine app is actually a combination sampler, sequencer, and audio processor. It carries all of the tools you need to improvise and record a bumping beat. Choose from the included package of drum kits, synths, bass, and other sounds, and then lay down a track on the pads. As Lidell shows off, the iPhone microphone can be used to grab samples or to record in real-time. Then you can use the built-in tools to edit the track and tweak the sound.

The music in the video is all recorded in real-time. Lidell makes the sampling, playing, recording, editing workflow look seamless and intuitive. Native Instruments didn't exactly hire an amateur to show off its app, and Lidell definitely had plenty of hands-on time before he shot the video. But at least we know what's possible. With a little creativity and practice—that could be you too. iMaschine costs $4.99 and is available now in the app store. [Native Instruments and Warp Records]

drag2share: Zotac's ZBOX nano VD01 packs dual-core VIA CPU in a tiny, tiny box

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/07/zotacs-zbox-nano-vd01-packs-dual-core-via-cpu-in-a-tiny-tiny-b/

ZBOX nano VD01
Zotac isn't the biggest name in computers, but the company does do one thing particularly well -- cram capable HTPC components in itty-bitty boxes for a reasonable price. VD01 series ditches more well known solutions from Intel and AMD for chips from VIA, specifically the Nano X2 U4025 CPU with its Chrome9 media processor. Inside is room for a 2.5-inch HDD and a single DDR3 slot, but you can get those pre-populated with a 320GB disk and 2GB RAM by opting for the Plus model. Outside is your usual selection of USB 3.0, 2.0, eSATA, Ethernet and HDMI ports while inside are both Bluetooth 3.0 and 802.11n radios. There's even an IR receiver and bundled remote to make this truly living room friendly. Check out the gallery below, as well as the PR after the break.

drag2share: Pandigital Supernova available mid-October for $230, is an eReader in Android tablet disguise

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/07/pandigital-supernova-available-mid-october-for-230-is-an-eread/

Pandigital hasn't made much of an effort to swathe its Supernova tab in mystery. When the 8-inch LCD slate swept through the FCC earlier this summer, we were privy not only to images of the device and its internals, but also to the apps that'd be pre-loaded on purchase -- GetJar and Barnes & Noble's Nook app amongst others. So, what can you expect for $230 when it lands this month? Well, the company's forsaken Honeycomb for the soon-to-be outclassed Gingerbread OS, tossed in a single-core 1GHz A8 processor, 4GB of storage (expandable to 32GB via microSD slot), WiFi and Bluetooth. It's a cheap, me too Android tablet entry, for sure. And with the recent outing of a certain budget-priced, ecosystem-friendly tab, we might suggest you hold off for the higher-specced goods. Official PR after the break.

drag2share: eFun announces $300 Nextbook Premium 8 Android tablet

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/06/efun-announces-300-nextbook-premium-8-android-tablet/

The Nextbooks 1 through 7 may not have caused much of a ripple in the Android tablet market, but eFun is keeping at it, and has now rolled out its new Nextbook Premium 8 model. There's still no Honeycomb to be found on this one (just Android 2.3), but you do get a slightly larger 8-inch capacitive screen, as well as a Rockchip RK2918 processor, 4GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 2 megapixel front-facing camera -- plus Kobo's eBook Store app preloaded (though there's no mention of Android Market). Unfortunately, in a season when you can get a Kindle Fire or Lenovo IdeaPad A1 for $200, this one will set you back a comparatively hefty $300 -- then again, it does have "Premium" in its name. Press release is after the break.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/06/motorola-xoom-family-edition-pops-up-at-retail-sporting-kid-frie/

Now that Motorola's Xoom is ready to rock out on 4G LTE connections, the only thing missing from the original 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet is a nice suite of edutainment software... wait, what? Whether or not that's what you asked for, it appears to be what Motorola's giving you judging by this "Family Edition" branded Xoom that just showed up at a big box electronics store. While there's still no hint of the subwoofer-equipped Xoom 2 Media Edition that's been rumored, this model is differentiated by the addition of a Kid Mode with $40 of software for kids from Zoodles (trailer after the break) packed-in. We don't have a release date or official pricing yet, but we'd expect to see the MZ505 on shelves sooner rather than later, but for now just check out a few more pics in the gallery below.

[Thanks, Anonymous]

That Boxee client update we saw recently wasn't the only thing brewing over at DVBLogic. It was part of a wider refresh of the company's DVBLink products, including the final release of its Connect! server software that can stream live TV from a network-connected tuner out to Android, iOS and WP client apps with EPG and remote recording. Other improvements include the ability to connect up to eight virtual tuners to Windows Media Center, the promise of less painful WMC setup, as well as a DVBLink Remote API that will allow third parties to create clients for other devices. Check out the full PR for pricing and other details after the break.

If you like making purchases without any sense of when your products will arrive, allow us to brighten your day. The Microsoft Store just started taking pre-orders for the Samsung Series 7 Slate -- you remember, the Windows 7 machine sporting Intel's 1.6GHz Core i5 2467M CPU with integrated graphics and 4GB of RAM, all beneath a 11.6-inch capacitive panel? Sure, you remember. MS is selling it for $1,299 with a 128GB SSD. And the mystery of wondering when it'll actually ship? That they'll throw in for free.

drag2share: Xoom 4G LTE upgrades boomerang back with Honeycomb update, microSD card support now a go

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/07/xoom-4g-lte-upgrades-boomerang-back-with-honeycomb-update-micro/

Xoom owners that hastily shipped off their slates for an LTE upgrade are in for a surprise. Turns out the newly equipped 4G tablets are not only being expediently returned, but also come with an upgrade to version 3.2.2 of Honeycomb. Details of just what's been included in the new firmware are scant, but the main takeaway from Verizon's overhaul is the now functional microSD slot. That's right, unless you were privy to that non-U.S. Android 3.1 update or installed the Tiamat kernel, you'll now finally be granted read/write access to your microSD card. It seems wishes do come true in Big Red land, you just have to practice extreme patience.

drag2share: ASUS Ultrabooks are actually Zenbooks?

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/07/asus-ultrabooks-are-actually-zenbooks/

ASUS has a big event next week in the Big Apple, where the super slim UX21 and UX31 will be revealed. Granted, the company said it'll be showing off "the real Ultrabook," on October 11th, but the eagle-eyed folks at Notebook Italia spied some evidence that the laptops in question will be called Zenbooks instead. Proof of the new moniker was found in the title of the information request form on the ASUS UX countdown site, but it was gone when we looked for ourselves. Guess we'll just have to wait and see whether the newest thin and light laptops are, indeed, PCs possessing inner peace.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/07/real-racing-2-shows-off-iphone-4s-graphical-chops-brings-split/

Rearing to make the most of the iPhone 4S' new AirPlay compatibility? How about streaming not just one device to your big screen, but four? That's the setup Firemint is teasing for its next big update to Real Racing 2: four-player streaming over AirPlay. The apps' upcoming "Party Play" feature lets an iPad 2 or iPhone 4S play host to up to three additional iOS devices running the game, piping the stream for all four to your boob tube via Apple TV. The update also promises to make the most of the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S' A5 processor, kicking the graphics up a notch. Now you can relive those lazy summer days playing Mario Kart in your friends garage, albeit with faster cars and minus those infuriating blue shells.

drag2share: Galaxy Nexus: The First Ice Cream Sandwich Android Phone Has a Killer 720p Screen [Video]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5847288/galaxy-nexus-the-first-ice-cream-sandwich-android-phone-has-a-killer-720p-screen

Galaxy Nexus: The First Ice Cream Sandwich Android Phone Has a Killer 720p ScreenIt's looking like the Nexus Prime we've been talking about is actually the Galaxy Nexus. This first Android 4.0 phone will be revealed next Tuesday and if these leaked specs are right, it's going to be one hell of a device.

With the iPhone 4S leaving us a bit underwhelmed, the door is open for Android to make a big move. BGR has received some intel from a trusted source, and the full specs are as follows:

• Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
• 9mm thin
• 4.65-inch 1280 x 720-pixel Super AMOLED HD with curved glass
• TI OMAP 4460 dual-core Cortex A9 processor clocked at 1.2GHz
• 1GB of RAM
• 32GB of built-in storage
• 5-megapixel camera on the back, 1.3-megapixel in the front
• 1080p HD video capture support
• LTE/HSPA depending on carrier
• Wi-Fi a/b/g/n
• NFC
• 1,750 mAh battery

Those are some serious specs. It's not the five-core Kal-El processor we were hoping for, but oh man, that's screen. By my caculations it'll have a pixel density of 316ppi, which is just a smidge under the 326ppi of the iPhone 4 (and 4S). Doing it on a Super AMOLED screen, though, is going to be awesome. It's also a pure Google Experience device, which means there won't be any custom skins or bloatware weighing it down. It is rumored to be a Verizon exclusive, which makes me question the HSPA radio mentioned above, but perhaps it's to be a world phone? Who knows, this could all be bogus.

While this all sounds great, the real star of the show will be Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which we still know next to nothing about, other than it's supposed to bridge the gap between Gingerbread (Android 2.3.x) and Honeycomb (Android 3.x). If it's a major improvement then you can expect a gigantic winter for the little green robot. We'll be live-blogging the grand unveiling next week, so stay tuned. [BGR via DroidLife]

(Note: The image above is of the Nexus S, not the Galaxy Nexus. Don't freak out.)

Galaxy Nexus: The First Ice Cream Sandwich Android Phone Has a Killer 720p ScreenUpdate #1:Yesterday we posted this teaser video from Samsung. At the end of it a light pans across the Galaxy Nexus, which reveals it, but we never see the whole thing all at once. Well, a very clever Reddit user used some photoshop wizardry to make a composite of the image all lit up. It gives us our clearest view of the phone yet. Thanks, Greyhaven7! Here's the video for reference. [Reddit]

drag2share: Picsicle Turns Mobile Photos Into Full-Size Postcards And Ships Them Anywhere In The World For $1.99

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/picsicle-turns-mobile-photos-into-full-size-postcards-and-ship-them-anywhere-in-the-world-for-199-2011-10

picsicle frank denbow

Last month, mobile photo editor Aviary held a Hack Day and it gave developer Frank Denbow an idea.

Using Aviary's API and Sincerely's Postagram API, he built a new app, Picsicle, which is launching today.

Picsicle is like Postagram in that it turns mobile photos into post cards on the fly for cheap.  It's just a little more souped up.

Postagram's post cards are standard and black, with a 3x3 photo area.  But Picsicle turns the entire image into the 4x6 card, with a blank space for text on the back side. In addition, Picsicle uses Aviary's API to offer instant touch ups to images. The Picsicle sender can reduce red eye, tweak colors, add speech bubbles, crop the image, and more.

Denbow isn't sure if he'll turn Picsicle into a full-fledged business, or if he'll keep creating apps. He currently owns Songsicle, an app that lets users send music to friends.

The below image shows how Picsicle works. You can send an image postcard to anyone in the world for a $1.99 flat fee.
