drag2share: Only in Japan: Toshiba's Regza DBR-M190 serves 5TB of home media

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/only-in-japan-toshibas-regza-dbr-m190-serves-5tb-of-home-media/

Sometimes gigabytes aren't enough. You have to start talking terabytes. That's the case with Toshiba's new Regza Server, more numerically known as the DBR-M190. The just-announced home media server boasts 5TB of storage, enough for 15 days of MPEG4AVC-compressed digital TV -- from six different channels. Of course, that "server" in the name means you'll be able to stream captured content as well. The sad news? "You" means only Japanese consumers. But if you're one of the chosen many, this media-slinging behemoth will cost you 200,000 yen, or around $2,600.

drag2share: Toshiba's 4K, glasses-free 3DTV announced in Japan with more specs this time

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/toshibas-4k-glasses-free-3dtv-announced-in-japan-with-more-spe/

We first saw the retail edition of Toshiba's 3840x2160 resolution autostereoscopic (no glasses) 3DTV when it was announced in Europe at IFA last month, and now it has debuted in Japan during CEATEC. This time the company dropped a few more details, revealing that in lenticular 3D mode it's limited to an effective resolution of 1280x720, and showed off the face tracking that automatically optimizes the experience for up to nine simultaneous viewers depending on where they're sitting. Also mentioned were an optional THD-MBA1 input adapter due in 2012 and that 4K-res streaming IPTV is currently being tested. The Regza 55X3 will be priced comparably to its $10K~ Euro-spec counterpart when it arrives in December, but there's still no word on when it will ship in the US. Check out a few pictures of the presentation in the gallery below.

drag2share: Double portion of prepaid LG Android handsets coming to Net10

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/double-portion-of-prepaid-lg-android-handsets-coming-to-net10/

The upcoming battle of the budget Androids just won two new recruits courtesy of Net10. The MVNO is offering up the LG Optimus Net prepaid with a 3.2-inch HVGA display, 800MHz processor, 3MP camera (though Net10's site wrongly mentions 5MP), Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G and an included 4GB microSD card expandable to 32GB. There's also a slider version called the Optimus Q, which we're trying very hard not to confuse with last year's Optimus Q and which actually looks like a variant of Virgin Mobile's Optimus Slider. There's no price tag in sight, but contrary to the saying you probably can afford it.

[Thanks, Dwayne]

drag2share: Zune is dead, long live Zune

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/zune-is-dead-long-live-zune/

Like Zune's own Business Development Manager once said, all consumer electronics products have a lifespan, and today the (not so long) lineage of dedicated Zune hardware expires not with a roar, but with a promise to honor its warranties. Tucked away in the inner chambers of the Zune support site lies a page spelling out Microsoft's final words on the device, "Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy," it says, "we will no longer be producing Zune players." The Zune HD is survived by the Zune music service, which will continue to function with straggling standalone media players, as well as the Windows desktop, Windows Phone and Xbox platforms.

drag2share: Toshiba Regza DBR-M190 stores 15 days of HDTV from six channels, we go hands-on (video)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/toshiba-regza-dbr-m190-stores-15-days-of-hdtv-from-six-channels/

There's no question that Japan gets all the cool gadgets -- many of which never make it stateside. Well, we have yet another tease for you, in the form of an eight-tuner Toshiba DVR with five terabytes of storage. The DBR-M190 reserves six of those tuners (and four TBs of storage) for its Time Shift recording, which as its name implies, transports you to an alternate dimension -- in realtime, mind you -- allowing you to watch past HD episodes of those favorite Japanese programs that you otherwise neglected to record. OK, fine, it can't actually shift physical time, but the home DVR does allow you to record 15 full days of HD content from six channels. Or 30 days from three channels, or 90 days from one -- you get the idea. It also offers 3D Blu-ray playback. Huzzah!

There's some pretty heavy compression in place in order to squeeze all that HD content with the allotted storage, but Toshiba reps insisted that the content looks acceptable. Clever as they are, reps also neglected to have that heavily compressed HD video available for demo at CEATEC, but were happy to let us peek at a show recorded using a much more liberal amount of compression, which nets you just one-fifth of the advertised amount (think three days, not 15). Still, three days of 24 hour content from six channels ain't too shabby, but that 200,000 yen price tag (about $2,600) is a bit of a deal breaker, no? As is the fact that you can't plug this puppy into cable networks overseas (Time Shift is only compatible with basic cable channels in Japan). Jump past the break to see it in action, and expect to see it hit Japanese shores sometime in mid-December.

drag2share: CHART OF THE DAY: Android Could Hit 1 Million Activations Per Day This Month

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-android-activations-2011-10

Google's Android is on track to hit a major milestone this month — it could be at 1 million activations per day by October 20, says Michael DeGusta after a little analysis

If you extrapolate from Andy Rubin's June tweet that, "there are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day, and it’s growing at 4.4% w/w," you arrive at the 1 million per day projection for October.

If Rubin was getting ahead of himself, there's still a good chance that Google hits the milestone by December based on its previous growth.

drag2share: SendTab Easily Moves Your Browser Tabs to Nearly Any Device [Browser Extensions]

Source: http://lifehacker.com/5846106/sendtab-easily-moves-your-browser-tabs-to-nearly-any-device

SendTab Easily Moves Your Browser Tabs to Nearly Any DeviceAll web browsers and iOS: SendTab is a very simple utility that lets you send a browser tab to another device with one or two clicks. It works in an instant, cross-browser, and even with iPhones and iPads.

SendTab is like a combination of Instapaper and remote tabs, allowing you to send content to other devices to read later or simply access as needed. If you're at work and want to check out an article on your home laptop, it'll let you click a button and the page will open up pretty much instantly. All you have to do is sign up for SendTab on their web site and specify a location. If you're using Chrome or Safari, you can install a browser extension that'll let you send tabs to other computers and iOS devices. If you're using Firefox, Opera, or another browser, there's a bookmarklet available instead. On your iDevice, you can purchase the SendTab app for $1. Currently there's no Android version, but hopefully that is in the works. Regardless, it's still a pretty handy way to move your pages from computer to computer to mobile device. It functions seamlessly, is free to use (outside of the iOS app), and is definitely worth checking out.

drag2share: Is JVC's Crazy Looking New Camera the Mythical Hybrid Video/Still Camera? [Cameras]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5846110/is-jvcs-crazy-looking-new-camera-the-mythical-hybrid-videostill-camera

Is JVC's Crazy Looking New Camera the Mythical Hybrid Video/Still Camera? The concept of a video/still camera didn't excite me much. But maybe that's because I've been waiting for a true video/still Hybrid. The sasquatch of the A/V forrest.

The JVC GC-PX10 is, let's just say it, weird-looking. It's like someone got a handycam drunk enough to sleep with a DSLR and their progeny was this contraption with a skinny back and pointy nose. Looks aside, it sounds like this thing actually has some horsepower. It shoots 12MP stills and 36 Mbps progressive 1080p HD video, which is a pretty serious bitrate for a consumer camcorder. It's got a 1/2.3" back-Illuminated CMOS sensor, which should give it solid low-light performance, and it's got a 10x optical zoom with optical image stabilization.

Is JVC's Crazy Looking New Camera the Mythical Hybrid Video/Still Camera? There are two features that have really piqued my interest, though. This sucker can shoot video at 300FPS, which is pretty good for a consumer camcorder. Play it back at 30FPS and that's 1/10th of realtime. You can't do that in full HD, but it at 640x360 that's plenty for standard definition or posting online. It can sustain shooting in that mode for a full two hours, which means you can probably record an entire sporting event in super slo-mo. Also handy for sports shooting is it's burst mode which can shoot an insane 60 shots per second, up to 130 shots per burst (when shooting at a slightly reduced 8.3MP). No dSLR currently on the market can do that, however the Nikon 1 can (and probably takes better photos, too).

Is JVC's Crazy Looking New Camera the Mythical Hybrid Video/Still Camera? What remains to be seen is how good the shots and footage looks. If photos are more important, you'll probably want the Nikon, but if video takes priority, this might well be worth a look. It'll be available for $900 later this month. [JVC]

drag2share: Vizio 8-Inch Tablet Lightning Review: A Couch Tablet If Ever I've Seen One [Video]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5845599/vizios-8+inch-vtab1008-lightning-review-a-couch-tablet-if-ever-ive-seen-one

Vizio is known for bringing pretty-good-for-the-price TVs to your living room. Now they've got an eight-inch tablet for you to cozy up with on the couch during those cold winter nights. But it's like snuggling with a cat who's had too many Cheetoes.

Like

The living roomiest feature of all is this thing's IR blaster and universal remote app. Programming it for my different devices was fast and easy, and it worked reasonably well (though it didn't have a home button analog for my Roku Player, which was frustrating). The speakers on this thing offer more clarity and bass than I've heard on just about any tablet, and they did something pretty smart with them. They put three speakers on this slab, and depending on how your hold it different speakers will be activated so it always sounds stereoriffic.

Most importantly, maybe, it's cheap compared to most of its Android brethren, going for around $290. (Or it was until the Kindle Fire got announced.) The UI they've put over Android is a bit Tron-ish but it doesn't look bad [editor's note: it's an atrocity frankly], and if you have other Vizio products this aesthetic will jive with those. It's one of the few Android tablets with a 4:3 ratio (most are 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen), which is good for reading books. And it's got loads of ports, to the tune of micro SD, micro USB, and micro HDMI.

No Like

Unfortunately, there ain't a lot of horsepower here. With a 1GHz single-core processor and 512MB of RAM, this guy starts huffing and puffing pretty easily and there's noticeable lag. It runs Android 2.3, which wasn't designed for tablets. They tried to overcome this with their UI, which does away with the classic Android homescreen/desktop. What you get is just a big old app drawer where apps can be grouped together and a separate Widget Board. The Widget Board is pretty bad. It's basically another desktop you can fill with widgets. And just widgets. Which makes them nigh pointless. In the process, Vizio erased Android's much-beloved notification panel.

Then there's the body. Just like a person that spends too much time on the couch, this tablet is thick and heavy. It's about half an inch thick, and though its screen is almost a full inch smaller than the Galaxy Tab 8.9, it won't fit in my jacket pocket like the Galaxy because it's almost a half-inch wider. There's no comfortable way to hold it in one hand (being over a pound doesn't help). Also, the screen is fairly pixely and isn't super bright.

Should I Buy This?

Vizio 8-Inch Tablet Lightning Review: A Couch Tablet If Ever I've Seen OneIt's cheap, for an Android tablet. $300! Unfortunately, there's just a lot of better stuff out there. The upcoming Kindle Fire is going to be only $200 and well, it's going to be way better. If you reeeeally wanted a tablet with remote control features, the Sony Tablet S has the same IR blaster but it's much faster and more palmable (albeit considerably more expensive).

drag2share: Adobe Photoshop Touch Is Coming to Android Tablets Before the iPad [Apps]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5846229/adobe-photoshop-touch-is-coming-to-android-tablets-before-the-ipad/gallery/1

Adobe Photoshop Touch Is Coming to Android Tablets Before the iPadAdobe has some pretty sweet Photoshop-esque iPad apps in Eazel, Cover Lava and Adobe Nav but they're not quite Photoshop. However! Adobe will soon be bringing Photoshop Touch to tablets, first on Android tablets and then on the iPad.

Photoshop Touch is actually part of a family of six tablet apps that'll be released in November. So along with Photoshop Touch, there's Collage, Debut, Ideas, Kuler and Proto. As Adobe describes it, Photoshop Touch will let users combine photos, edit photos, apply filters and other effects and poke with layers. Collage is where you drop images, drawings, text into a 'mood board', Debut shows off your pshop files, Ideas is a vector based tool for drawing, Kuler generates color themes and Proto is made for developers.

It's interesting that Adobe is launching Photoshop Touch on Android tablets first but the iPad versions should soon follow the launch in November. [Adobe]

drag2share: Showtime launches Anytime streaming portal, social iPad app

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/showtime-launches-anytime-streaming-portal-social-ipad-app/

Just in time for the return of everyone's favorite serial killer, Showtime Anytime soft-launched recently, bringing online access to the network's library of movies, TV shows and more. Multichannel News reports AT&T U-verse subscribers are the first to gain access, although this same content has already been streaming on Comcast's Xfinity TV website and app. It's no HBO Go yet -- more cable companies and a few mobile apps will be necessary to match its rival there -- but the approach is the same, after pulling its shows from Netflix this TV Everywhere offering hopes to add enough value to keep viewers on the traditional pay-TV train a little longer. While there's no self-branded streaming app yet, the channel has also launched a Showtime Social iPad app to keep viewers tied in with their friends and other viewers while they watch -- let us know if it makes Dexter any more / less creepy.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/t-mobile-and-walmart-offer-4g-with-no-long-term-contract-avoidi/

Tree-Mobil... sorry, T-Mobile and Walmart are offering up an exclusive "No Annual Contract" deal for commitment-phobic customers who want to get 4G mobile data. The $30 a month Monthly4G plan gives you unlimited mobile data, with the first 5GB coming down through America's so-called largest 4G network. After you pass that limit, your data shuffles down at 2G speeds. You also get unlimited text messages and 100 included minutes of talk, but you're probably more interested at getting at that data, aren't you? The service will be available from October 16th, to coincide with Walmart swelling its range of budget T-Mob handsets to six, including its first pre-paid 4G handset. After the break we've got some official looking words, neatly arranged into a press release.

Walk along that sparse borderline between Bluetooth headset and pearl necklace and you'll eventually come across a company called Novero. It specializes in vaguely ridiculous bejeweled wireless things, but it has some serious products too -- including these surreptitious little Rockaway earphones that have just been approved by the FCC. They'll cope with hands-free calling, 5.5 hours of stereo music and 250 hours in standby -- plus they weigh just 10 grams. Perfect for any NYC cabbie wanting to flout the rules at 50MPH.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/03/lightsquared-teams-up-with-sharp-to-begin-production-of-lte-phon/

Irksome GPS interference issues now somewhat safely behind it, LightSquared's plowing forward into OEM waters. The LTE wholesaler has just struck up an agreement with Sharp that'll see the electronics company creating the first line of devices specifically tailored for the nascent 4G network. Of course, these smartphones and tablets won't be sold by the Falcone-backed company, and will instead make their way to its carrier partners -- like Sprint, C Spire and Best Buy. If the already inked collaboration means we'll be seeing this beastie on North American air waves, then we predict the heavily beset wireless outfit's rocky road to launch will give way to smooth sailing. Official presser after the break.
