We told you to keep an eye out for TRENDnet at CES this year, and guess what? They delivered. The kings of first-to-market WiFi devices will demo another first this week: the first 450Mbps concurrent dual band wireless router, or TEW-692GR. TRENDnet will be the first to tell you that their new router is the first to offer full 450Mbps on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless bands, simultaneously. As with the company's TEW-690AP, the TEW-692GR delivers a max theoretical throughput of 450Mbps, with three spatial streams per antenna, and can hit a whole gigabit via wired ethernet port. The TEW-692GR goes to market in April and will retail for about $250. If you want to be the first on your block to see the power router in action, check out the TRENDnet booth at CES.

FreeOCR Is a No-Hassle Scan-to-Text Converter for Windows [Downloads]

Source: http://lifehacker.com/5726454/freeocr-is-a-no+hassle-scan+to+text-converter-for-windows

FreeOCR Is a No-Hassle Scan-to-Text Converter for WindowsWindows only: Your scanner probably came with OCR software. Chances are, though, it's both awkward and space-hogging. FreeOCR is an slim, efficient app that has just four main buttons, and performs well at converting scanned images and PDFs into edit-ready text.

Since so many scanners these days come as part of an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier combo, avoiding the installation of gigantic, auto-starting, self-promoting printer drivers is something we should all strive for. FreeOCR is a great alternative if you need to occasionally rip some text from a letter or other document. The app can grab text right off the scanner, or you can feed it a PDF file. Either way, your PDF shows up in the left window, and your text is ready to edit or copy in the right. Why more OCR apps aren't like this, we can't quite say.

FreeOCR is a free download for Windows systems only. Look for the download link a bit down the page. The app needs an internet connection active during installation, because it seems to be grabbing updated files from its server.

Google Docs Now Allows Streaming of Uploaded Videos [Video]

Source: http://lifehacker.com/5726965/google-docs-now-allows-streaming-of-uploaded-videos

Google Docs Now Allows Streaming of Uploaded VideosEver since Google Docs started allowing file uploads of any type, it's been a great way to store and share files in the cloud. As of today, though, you can not only store, but play uploaded videos right in Google Docs.

It's actually a pretty nice feature if you want to, say, share videos with friends without uploading it to YouTube. To play a video in Google Docs, just navigate to it in your documents list—it should already be processed through a YouTube-like player and be streamable. Video files can be up to 1 GB, and will need to be in one fo the following formats:

  • WebM files (Vp8 video codec and Vorbis Audio codec)
  • .MPEG4, 3GPP and MOV files - (h264 and mpeg4 video codecs and AAC audio codec)
  • .AVI (many cameras use this format - typically the video codec is MJPEG and audio is PCM)
  • .MPEGPS (MPEG2 video codec and MP2 audio)
  • .WMV
  • .FLV (Adobe - FLV1 video codec, MP3 audio)

You will need Flash installed to stream the videos. Any videos you've uploaded in the past should be playable, though Google's still processing all the videos on their servers, so it still may take a little while for all of yours to show up (depending on when you uploaded them). Verizon's First LTE Wi-Fi Hotspots [4G]

Verizon's First LTE Wi-Fi HotspotsUntil now, all of Verizon's 4G has been packed inside dongles. Samsung and Novatel's LTE hotspots will let you spread the 4G around with Wi-Fi. Slightly thicker than the old MiFi, but you need the space for all them Gees.

No price or date—or battery life spec—for Samsung's 4G Hotspot or Novatel's MiFi 4510L yet, unfortunately. Just that they'll support up to 5 devices.

Verizon's First LTE Wi-Fi HotspotsSamsung's also got a new LTE version of Galaxy Tab as well. It's prettier, but basically the same inside (even still running Android 2.2) and they're not talking price difference (if any).

ContourGPS Uses Your Smartphone as a Viewfinder [Video]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5727221/contourgps-uses-your-smartphone-as-a-viewfinder

ContourGPS Uses Your Smartphone as a ViewfinderHey, people with ContourGPS sports cameras: CONGRATULATIONS! YOU'VE WON A PRIZE! That camera you've got strapped to your helmet has been hiding a secret Bluetooth chip, which you'll soon be able to use to stream live video to your smartphone.

By applying a firmware upgrade for the camera and downloading a free phone app, Contour GPS users can stream their cameras' view (at 8FPS) to their smartphones over Bluetooth. Having a viewfinder for one of these cameras is a huge deal—it's easy to end up with a poorly-framed video with one of these cameras, since you typically can't preview your shot before recording—but with a range of 30+ feet, there's a lot of room for creative use (Think super simple surveillance, a rear-mounted car camera, confessional-style video, etc.) Here's how it works:

The Android app should be available in Spring, and the iPhone app should follow soon after. Unfortunately, due to differences in Bluetooth handling between Android and iOS, the iPhone version will require a $30 transmitter that slips into an expansion port on the ContourGPS camera.
