Researchers Have Created a UV Light That Kills Bacteria Without Harming Humans [Science]

Researchers Have Created a UV Light That Kills Bacteria Without Harming Humans [Science]

Researchers Have Created a UV Light That Kills Bacteria Without Harming Humans It's widely known that ultraviolet light has bacteria killing properties. Unfortunately, its usefulness is limited since it also harms us. But now researchers have developed a high intensity, narrow spectrum wavelength that's safe enough to be used as lighting in hospitals.

High Intensity, Narrow Spectrum (HINS) light works by exciting molecules within bacteria to lethal levels, inducing bacterial suicide. Since it's harmless to humans, it can be incorporated into lighting, keeping areas constantly sterile.

The researchers, from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, also anticipated that people may not enjoy living in a purple-hued world, so they've figured out how to combine it with LED technology for a warmer, more pleasant glow. [University of Strathclyde via Smart Planet via Popular Science]

Confirmed: Intel Sandy Bridge or 'second generation Core processors' to be introduced at CES

Confirmed: Intel Sandy Bridge or 'second generation Core processors' to be introduced at CES

We can't say this one is much of a surprise considering we've heard multiple times that Intel was planning to launch its next generation of Sandy Bridge processors in early 2011, but Chipzilla just confirmed that it will indeed be launching those "second generation Intel Core processors" at its CES press conference on January 5th. The details in the invite are few and far between, though apparently our favorite Intel exec Mooly Eden will take the stage to show off the "world's fastest processor" as well as technologies that "enhance visual life." Our guess is that we will also hear a number of Sandy Bridge system announcements from major laptop and desktop manufacturers at the show. Of course, we're also hoping to hear some solid Oak Trail / tablet news and more details about LightPeak at the presser, but there's one thing you can count on... us liveblogging our hearts out!

AMD's Bobcat APU benchmarked: the age of the Atom is at an end

AMD's Bobcat APU benchmarked: the age of the Atom is at an end

So small, and yet potentially so disruptive. AMD's 1.6GHz Zacate chip, bearing a pair of Bobcat modules, has been taken off the leash today, resulting in a torrent of benchmarks pouring down onto the internet. While perusing the sources below, you might think to yourself that it's not exactly a world beater, sitting somewhere in the middle of the pack on most tests, but compare it to Intel's dual-core Atom D510 -- its most immediate competition in the target sub-$500 laptop price range -- and you'll find a thoroughgoing whooping in progress. The highlight of these new Fusion APUs is that they integrate graphics processing within the CPU chip, and Zacate didn't disappoint on that front either, with marked improvements over anything else available in its class. The resulting chips might still not have quite enough grunt to earn a place in your daily workhorse mobile computer, but their power efficiency and netbook-level pricing goals sure do look delightful. Or dangerous, if you're Intel.

Dell Inspiron Duo tablet could be with us next week

Dell Inspiron Duo tablet could be with us next week

Alright, we know AMD's busy showing off its Atom killer, but there's still a little life left in Intel's netbook stalwart, which has been harnessed to its fullest in Dell's screen-flipping Duo tablet / netbook. And the good news is that we apparently won't have to wait too long to see that zany concoction out in the real world. Well placed sources have informed CNET that Dell intends to release the Inspiron Duo at some point next week, potentially on November 23rd, while pre-sale information should be dished out later this week, alongside Microsoft's announcement of a new store opening. Things are moving along nice and swiftly, it would seem.

3D Mirror Accessory Turns iPhones Into Fun 3D Cinemas [Video]

3D Mirror Accessory Turns iPhones Into Fun 3D Cinemas [Video]

Whoa. While you can't actually buy this i3DG peripheral for your iPhone yet, I'm already imagining playing 3D games created especially for it. You can kiss the 3DS buh-bye.

It figures it's Japan-originated, where creator Jitsuro Mase collaborated with Directions, Inc for an Austrian expo. I desperately hope Mase manages to put it into production, because it looks far better than any other form of "3D" I've seen on something that small, including Sharp's parallax barrier panels that are used in Nintendo's 3DS.

The small add-on is made up of three 45-degree mirrors, which slips over the iPhone (or iPad, as apparently they made larger ones too), and projects whatever video is playing on the iPhone. You may look a little silly watching a movie by staring at the 30-pin connector of the iPhone, but little do those around you know that you're actually enjoying a quality 3D illusion by the name of pepper's ghost—something that's been around since the 1860s, supposedly.

For now, it only works with custom clips, but if enough developers are intrigued by this video, they could start creating clips and games in thirds, ready for launch. [Palm Top Theater via Creative Applications via Fastco]

HP Mini 1103 released for business people on a budget

HP Mini 1103 released for business people on a budget

Devastated that you won't be able to nab an HP Slate 500 in time for the holidays? How about a brand new HP business netbook as a consolation? The Mini 1103 looks a lot like the consumer Mini 210 but drops the colorful lid options as it's more for Suits in search of an affordable mini-laptop. Starting at $299, the 10.1-inch netbook is available with Intel Atom N455 and N475 processor options, 1GB of RAM, three- and six-cell batteries, and your choice of Windows 7 Starter, SUSE Linux, or FreeDOS OS. Obviously, if you're looking for a higher-end netbook with an HD display, touchscreen, dual-core processor, and more durable aluminum lid, there's still the $399 Mini 5103, but the Mini 1103 does have HP's business applications, including QuickSync and QuickWeb. Hit the gallery below for shots of the new little guy and the source link for a full rundown of the configurations.

Comcast Xfinity remote app for iPhone, iPad launches, video streaming & Android version on the way

Comcast Xfinity remote app for iPhone, iPad launches, video streaming & Android version on the way

The Xfinity remote app Comcast CEO Brian Roberts showed off earlier this year is now available in the app store for the iPad and iPhone. Currently they allow Comcast customers with compatible digital TV service to browse listings and On Demand content from their portable device and change channels right from the app. Video streaming, additional remote features and enhanced search are all promised for future releases, while other platforms should also get their own versions soon. Android apps are promised for later this year, with Blackberry to follow. For now, check out the press release and original demo video embedded after the break or grab the app from iTunes and break out your Comcast e-mail address to try it out prior to a live demo at 8:30 (EST) this evening at the Web 2.0 conference. It may not be the improved interface for our cable boxes we've been expecting for such a long time, but it's at least a step in that direction.

White HTC EVO 4G leaves the Best Buy nest, migrates to Sprint stores

White HTC EVO 4G leaves the Best Buy nest, migrates to Sprint stores

Once a Best Buy exclusive, the white version of HTC's still-badass EVO 4G is finally making its way into actual Sprint retail locations, the carrier's website, and other third party stores for the same $199 on contract after $100 mail-in rebate as usual. Gives us a good opportunity to levy the same complaint we'd levied before -- that the front of the phone should be white, not just the back -- but hey, at least passers-by will know you're stylin' when you've got it held to your face.

LG Vortex puts a Verizon spin on budget Android -- yes, Bing's there, too

LG Vortex puts a Verizon spin on budget Android -- yes, Bing's there, too

It's not exactly the Optimus T / S we saw hit T-Mobile and Sprint, respectively, but for all intents and purposes, it's a fraternal twin. The LG Vortex for Verizon brings with it Android 2.2, a 3.2-inch touchscreen, 3G Mobile HotSpot capability, Skype, Swype, a suite of pre-installed carrier / manufacturer apps (e.g. VZ Navigator), and as you might've guessed from it being a non-Droid Verizon Android phone, Bing Search and Bing Maps. Despite being a later arrival, this one's actually the most expensive of the three -- $80 on contract after $100 mail-in rebate. November 18th, if you want to mark a calendar.

What Is Path? [Video]

What Is Path? [Video]

Path! Path? It's this week's buzzy social networking iPhone app, developed by an impressive roster of peeps and backed by a long list of investors. But what's it really do?

Path is a 'personal network' app for the iPhone...

Path is a new social network app for the iPhone that lets you share what's going on in your life with friends and family. It's kinda like Twitter or Instagram, but it's kinda not.

with a personal twist...

Unlike other social media platforms where a bigger list of friends is always better, Path caps you at 50 friends. The idea is that when you know you're just sharing with people you really trust, you'll be far more inclined to share without inhibition.

based on sharing pictures...

Photos are the meat of Path. Snap one on your iPhone, tag it with any number of people, places, or things, and fire it off to your friends. It'll show up on their Paths, and a feature called "See" shows you which of your friends have actually stopped by and viewed your photo. Stop ignoring my pictures, friends!

that was developed by an all-star crew...

Path is the brainchild of Dave Morin, a long time Facebook employee who left the company last January, Shawn Fanning, Napster founder, and Dustin Mierau, developer of the Mac Napster client Macster. It's a pretty impressive team.

that you can download now for free.

Path is available in the App Store right now for free. [Path]
