Nikon S1100pj Second Gen Projector Camera Is Brighter, Cheaper, and Can Project What's On Your Computer [Cameras]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5614312/nikon-s1100pj-second-gen-projector-camera-is-brighter-cheaper-and-can-project-whats-on-your-computer

Nikon S1100pj Second Gen Projector Camera Is Brighter, Cheaper, and Can Project What's On Your ComputerThe original projector point-and-shoot, the Nikon S1000pj, was undoubtedly a novelty, but it was a novelty we found pretty charming. Its successor, the S1100pj, is 40% brighter, can act as a projector for your computer, and will retail for $350.

The 14.1MP Nikon S1100pj sports a 5x optical zoom lens and ISO up to 6400. It has 17 scene modes, a 5-way image stabilization system, and the ability to shoot 720p video. But there will still be point-and-shoots that will take nicer pictures for the price.

But the S1100pj has improved its secret weapon, a built-in projector, by making it both brighter and more widely usable: the new 14-lumen projector is 40% brighter than the one that came before it—hopefully that'll help when you're projecting in a non-dim room—and plugging the camera into a computer via USB lets you awesomely project whatever is on the screen, at a size of up to 47" over 7 feet away.

Nikon S1100pj Second Gen Projector Camera Is Brighter, Cheaper, and Can Project What's On Your Computer

In addition to a newer, less bulky body, the S1100pj has a 3", 460,000 dot touch screen, and a new paint mode lets you draw and write and stamp goofy stamps on the projected images in real time, right from the camera. Useful for a presentation, or for drawing devil horns on your friends immediately after snapping a shot.

The S1100pj will be available in mid-September for $350, a tick more reasonable than the S1000pj which initially retailed for $430, in black, violet, green, and silver. [Nikon]

Shoot 3D Photos and HD Video on Fujifilm's Glasses-Less W3 Camera [Cameras]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5613988/shoot-3d-photos-and-video-on-fujifilms-glasses+less-w3-camera

Shoot 3D Photos and HD Video on Fujifilm's Glasses-Less W3 CameraA year after Fujifilm introduced the first 3D camera to us, they've fine-tuned their encore act, the W3—which shoots 3D video in 720p resolution, taking it from VGA to HD.

Of course, like with the first model, you can turn off the 3D function so you're shooting in plain ol' 2D, but with that 3.5" lenticular screen on the reverse of the camera, you can see 3D photos and video popping out instantly—and without the need for glasses.

The 3D works by shooting a subject with two 3x optical zoom Fujinon lenses and CCDs, combining the two photos so they appear in 3D. A number of selections can be chosen when snapping photos in 2D, so one photo is shot in close-up, the other in wide-angle, or they can be shot in varying ISO ranges, and so forth. This could create a lot of different effects, and would quickly eat up your time fiddling with the options.

The addition of a miniHDMI port means 3D content can be viewed on 3DTVs and 3D laptops via HDMI, but also on an 8" Fujifilm 3D photo frame and in lenticular prints (bought separately). The latter two, like with watching the images on the 3.5" display, don't require glasses.

This second model is also smaller and lighter than before, weighing 230g.

On sale in September, only the UK pricing for the FinePix Real 3D W3 camera has been released for now—£399 (around $625, which is the same price as the W1 from last year). Still overpriced, in other words, but it certainly has a few extra tricks up its sleeve.

UPDATE: It'll cost $500 in the US. [Fujifilm]

IKEA Dreams up the Year 2040's Kitchen Equipment [Concepts]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5614742/ikea-dreams-up-the-year-2040s-kitchen-equipment

IKEA Dreams up the Year 2040's Kitchen EquipmentIKEA might be known for soulless furniture basics, but in the year 2040 they're planning on selling mood-adjusting kitchenware, and fridges that project celebrity chefs' cooking tutorials. In short, it doesn't sound all that far-fetched.

The "SKARP" concept as it's been dubbed, was designed after close to 2,000 people were surveyed on what they expect kitchens to look like in 2040. I'm not so sure about their idea that this kitchen will have sixth-generation iPads in every cabinet door, but the 3D food printing is certainly something we know is on its way.

These numbers correlate to the objects in the picture above—

1.) Food is grown on this shelf without soil.
2.) 3D food printer
3.) Fridge, with an interactive 3D screen.
4.) Multi-touch tap.
5.) Self-cleaning surfaces.
6.) This tool displays nutritional info of ingredients
7.) Remote-controlled cooker
8.) Retractable shelves
9.) Height-adjustable cabinets
10.) Energy monitor
11.) Genetically-engineered food.
12.) Roll-out chopping boards and draws.

Really, 2040? Most of this technology is already available, or at the very least, entirely possible. Nonetheless, I'd give up eating cheese for a kitchen that tidy and organized.

GPUs democratize brute force password hacking

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/16/gpus-democratize-brute-force-password-hacking/

It seems that the availability of increasingly powerful GPUs, when combined with brute-force password cracking tools, is making it increasingly easy to crack passwords -- even if they're extremely well thought out, with symbols and quirky capitalization and all that. How short is too short? According to computer scientists at the Georgia Tech Research Institute, "a seven-character password is hopelessly inadequate, and as GPU power continues to go up every year, the threat will increase." A better alternative, he suggested, would be a 12-character combination of upper and lower case letters, symbols and digits. Of course, processors are only getting more powerful and hardware less expensive -- soon even seven-plus character passwords may become the digital equivalent of unlocked doors. And if that weren't bad enough, a recent study by an Internet security company called BitDefender has determined that some 250,000 user names, email addresses, and passwords used for social networking sites are freely available online -- and seventy-five percent of these folks use the same password for their email and social networking. So, when dreaming up fancy new twelve character passwords, make sure you're creating unique passwords for all your various accounts. It would be a shame if your Starsky & Hutch FanFicForum account left you vulnerable to identity theft.

Adobe AIR 2.5 coming to Android in Q4 2010, but only to capable phones

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/16/adobe-air-2-5-coming-to-android-in-q4-2010-but-only-to-capable/

When will Strong Bad and company become native Android applications? Anytime after Q4 2010 -- that's when Adobe says it wants to have Adobe AIR for Android runtimes publicly available in the Android Market, along with an initial batch of apps, and fairly exciting potential for more. The Android release will be part of AIR 2.5 and grant would-be developers access to your smartphone's camera, microphone, accelerometer and GPS as well as providing hardware GPU acceleration and multitouch input, which could make for some exciting PopCap games completely serious and not at all game related utilities down the road. Don't necessarily expect them to work on every Android phone, however, as there are some prerequisites for AIR, namely an ARMv7 processor or better with a vector co-processor, OpenGL ES 2.0 and Froyo, but Adobe says if your device handles Flash 10.1, it'll probably run AIR.

On a related note, if you weren't yet sold on Google TV, a breath of fresh AIR might help -- Adobe told us it's presently pondering the correct time to add the cross-platform runtimes on Google's video streaming boxes as well.

Nikon Coolpix S1100pj projector cam arrives with USB projection and touchscreen telestrator capabilities; S5100 arrives in tow

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/17/nikon-coolpix-s1100pj-projector-cam-arrives-with-usb-projection/

Looks like those German Coolpix leaks were right on the money -- Nikon's just announced the Coolpix S1100pj and the S5100. The S1100pj is a seriously hot update to the original quirky and lovable Nikon Coolpix S1000pj projector-cam: not only is it thinner and sleeker, but the projector is brighter at 14 lumens and can now beam images off a laptop over USB. The control scheme also looks to have been simplified, with a new three-inch 460,000-dot touchscreen taking over most duties and enabling a wild telestrator-style paint mode which lets you draw right on top of projected images in real-time. Camera-wise, it's an iterative bump over the previous model: 14 megapixel sensor with 720p movie mode and ISO 6400 sensitivity, 28-140mm 5x optical zoom with five-way stabilizer, and the ability to detect faces, smiles and blinks. Perhaps best of all, MSRP has dropped $100 to $349, which actually makes it a somewhat reasonable consideration if you're shopping higher-end cams. Yep, we definitely want to play with one -- it'll hit in a bunch of colors next month sometime.

The Coolpix S5100 is a bit less interesting, slotting in between the S6000 and S4000. Nothing too complicated here, just a 12.1 megapixel sensor with ISO 3200 sensitivity and a 720p movie mode, 5x optical zoom with four-way stabilization, and a nifty tripod-detection function that automatically tweaks shutter speed and exposure to produce blur-free images when the camera is handheld. It'll be $179 in a bunch of colors when it hits in October -- check a shot after the break, along with the full PR for both cams.

P.S.- That's both of the leaked Coolpix models -- we've got a feeling we'll be hearing about that D3100 DSLR rather soon as well.

Fujifilm introduces Finepix Real 3D W3 camera, we go hands-on

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/17/fujifilm-introduces-finepix-real-3d-w3-camera-we-go-hands-on/

When reviewers call your product "the worst ____ ever made," do you give up and move on? Or do you build a second model and try to prove them wrong? After introducing the world's first consumer stereoscopic 3D shooter to dismal reviews, FujiFilm chose door number two, replacing the camera with a thinner, lighter, and easier-to-use version that addresses a host of complaints and costs $100 less to boot. The FujiFilm FinePix Real 3D W3 adds a larger 3.5-inch, 16:9 LCD screen, a 720p video recording mode, and HDMI 1.4 out for dropping images and videos right into your 3D-ready TV. Oh, and it actually feels like a real camera this time, our favorite feature by far. We got some hands-on time with the new cross-eyed shooter, read on for more!

Qualcomm to ship 1.5GHz QSD8672 Snapdragon processor in Q4

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/17/qualcomm-to-ship-1-5ghz-qsd8672-snapdragon-processor-in-q4/

And you thought a dual-core 1.2GHz chip was quick. If all goes to plan (that's a big "if," by the way), Qualcomm will one-up its Computex standout before the end of this year, with vice president of product management Mark Frankel affirming that his company is on track to ship a 1.5GHz dual-core QSD8672 chip prior to the dawn of 2011. He's quoted as saying that the blazing new Snapdragon could find a home in smartphones, low-cost laptops and tablet PCs, and while we're led to believe that the vast majority of said products won't actually greet consumers until early next year, a few aggressive partners may get wares out "by Christmas." For those unfamiliar, the fancy new 8672 is based on an ARM design and will be crafted using a 45nm process technology, and the individual voltage scaling will enable each core to be clocked independently of the other in order to maximize battery life and performance. Naturally, 1080p video playback will be supported, as will DDR2, DDR3 and HDMI interfaces. Oh, and don't sweat it -- you've still got plenty of time to get on Santa's 'good' list.

Sony's Ultimate Weapon Gaming headsets are as macho as the name suggests

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/17/sonys-ultimate-weapon-gaming-headsets-are-as-macho-as-the-name/

According to Sony, your Ultimate Weapon when it comes to schooling fools on the FPS battlefield is a 3D surround sound headset. Just like its newly minted DR-GA500 above, what a coincidence! Coming with a separate box to process your computer's audio into a 7.1-channel surround sound environment, this mic-equipped set of cans is targeted squarely at gamers looking to optimize every last inch of their fragging experience. There's also a GA-200 model that makes do without the extra audio processing. Both variants share the super special "triple enfolding" padding design, which is intended to make the headgear comfortable for prolonged use. Prices and retail dates aren't yet available, but just to underline that gaming connection one extra time, Sony will be bundling a free copy of the latest Medal of Honor with these 'phones starting in mid-October.

7-inch iPad tattle churns through Taiwanese rumor mills

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/17/7-inch-ipad-rumors-heat-up-in-taiwanese-rumor-mills/

The 7-inch iPad rumors are suddenly hot and heavy. In the last few weeks, we've seen a series of reports claiming that Apple was working on a smaller iPad (or bigger iPod touch?) set for release between the end of 2010 or early 2011. A DigiTimes piece, sourcing its own "analyst," claimed that the device would be making a jump to the Cortex A9 processor core, 512MB of RAM like the iPhone 4, and a 1,024 x 768 pixel IPS panel -- the same resolution as the 9.7-inch iPad giving the new model a better pixel density. Now we've got Taiwan's Economic Daily News saying that Chi Mei will join LG in supplying the new 7-inch IPS panels with AUO joining Sintek to provide the digitizer. EDN also claims that either Compal or Pegatron may join Foxconn in the assembly. Remember, even with hints of a new iPad model in Apple's own code this is all just rumor for now. Besides, we're still waiting for those Xbox 360 Blu-ray drives that the Economic Daily News assured us were coming in Q3 of 2008.

Nook for iPhone, iPad and PC see updates, slew of new features in tow

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/17/nook-for-iphone-ipad-and-pc-see-updates-slew-of-new-features-i/

Barnes & Noble told us this update was in the pipeline when it introduced Nook for Android, and sure enough, said update is hitting the intertubes this fine morning. The iPhone and iPod touch version of the Nook app is said to be completely overhauled, while the iPad edition is the company's first to offer an in-app "rating" feature. In case you couldn't guess, the former also adds support for the iPhone 4's Retina Display, while also tossing in a slew of new customization options (themes, day / night content options, line spacing, font styles, preferred justification, previews, etc.). Finally, today also marks the reintroduction of the Nook for PC client, though it seems that most of the fanciful new features are reserved for the more portable versions. Hop on past the break for the full skinny, and tap that source link to get to downloadin'.

Meizu CEO Jack Wong spills more M9 hardware and UI details: Android 2.2 and retina-busting 960 x 480 screen
It's hard to call Meizu a straight-up KIRFmeister at this point, but the company certainly does like to flirt with copyright disaster. The M8 started off as an iPhone clone, but we've been hoping its successor, the M9, will be a bit more original. Meizu's Jack Wong has been dropping hints about the thing since January, and now he's tossing out a few more nuggets, like a Retina-matching 960 x 480 display -- making us wonder if this isn't just going to be an iPhone 4 wanna-be after all. Jack indicates the phone will run a heavily customized version of Android 2.2 (shown above) and is now pledging a proper release by the end of this year, with demo units making the rounds in October. Please forgive our cynicism, but we'll be using something non-permanent to mark that onto our calendar.
