drag2share: Moneto NFC microSD to bring contactless features to any Android phone
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/11/moneto-nfc-microsd-contactless-payment-Android-iPhone/
DeviceFidelity and Spring Card Systems have teamed up on a NFC-capable microSD card that will hopefully forgo the need of buying specific mobile handsets for the privilege of contactless payments. The card, which has been in development for a few years, houses an NFC radio and antenna that deals with payments through MasterCard's PayPass system. Moneto's iPhone case is already available, offering swipe payment delights for iOS users for $80, and includes $10 of spendable cash. The microSD card is set to land in the next few weeks, pegged at $30. Both will be available at the source below, with plans to support several -- as yet unnamed -- Android devices by Q2, rolling out further throughout 2012.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/11/a-spreadsheet-based-music-tracker-get-ready-to-rock-your-accoun/
Art and geekery: two sides of the same coin. A fact wonderfully demonstrated by this spiffy spreadheet-based music sequencer. Live-coder and all-round music hacker Patrick -- aka cappel:nord -- spotted the LibreOffice spreadsheet's sonic potential and decided to work his magic. The result is demonstrated in the video below. Sure, it's a little bit senza functionally, but it does appear to have velocity control, based on the cell's number value, as well as effects. Not bad for what the creator claims was "a three hour hack". Sadly there's sparse detail on how exactly the task was accomplished, but if you know your quavers from your variables, grab the source code by tapping the via after the jump.Continue reading A spreadsheet based music tracker: get ready to rock your accounts (video)

drag2share: T-Mobile announces the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G, available 'later this year'
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/galaxy-s-blaze-4g-t-mobile/
Hot on the heels of the Galaxy S II's success, T-Mobile's getting another Samsung 4G device brewed up. The new smartphone, called the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G, isn't set to be available until later this year, which unfortunately means we're getting very little details at the moment. According to the press release, the Blaze will have a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 42Mbps HSPA+ and a "brilliant Super AMOLED touch screen." Again, this is all we have been given at the moment, and we're confused by the fact that the display doesn't have an HD in front nor a Plus in back, as well as the phone's use of "Galaxy S" in the title. As always, it's our hope that this CES announcement will be shortly followed up with an opportunity to get some hands-on time and more details, and we'll keep you posted with any updates as they come in.Update: At tonight's T-Mobile event, we heard a slightly narrower timeframe for launch: sometime in the first half of the year.

drag2share: Motorola and Intel hold hands for multi-year, multi-device partnership, shipments start 2H 2012
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/motorola-intel-android-smartphone-partnership/
Well, look who just showed up at Intel's CES 2012 keynote? Motorola Mobility's own Sanjay Jha just grabbed a bit of the limelight -- long enough to announce a multi-year, multi-device agreement that should see Intel's Medfield chips powering Moto's hardware (the second announced behind Lenovo) in the not-too-distant future. Naturally, we're guessing Android will be the OS of choice here, but we can only guess what Motorola's going to do when all of its other chip partners come knocking with new questions.Update: We've learned that product shipments from the partnership will start in the second half of this year.
Follow along at our Intel liveblog here!

drag2share: Blue Microphones Tiki, Mikey Digital and Spark Digital hands-on
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/blue-microphones-tiki-mikey-digital-and-spark-digital-hands-on/
We swung by Blue Microphones' booth at CES to get our hands on its trio of new mics, and while the Mikey Digital and Spark Digital (the former for iPhone and iPad, and the latter for iPad only) looked very much like their analog counterparts, the cute little Tiki was quite the attention-seeker with its cyborg snail-like shape (and did we mention that there's a push button on its butt for toggling Intelligent Mute?). The new Spark's shock-mount desktop stand also intrigued us -- we'd say it's a nice blend of the old mount and the Yeti's stand. Other than that, there's really not much else to say about these funky-looking mics, so we'll let our photos below do the rest of the job.Blue Microphones Tiki, Mikey Digital and Spark Digital hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 20:35:00 EDT. drag2share: Lenovo K800 Intel Medfield smartphone hands-on (video)
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/lenovo-k800-intel-medfield-smartphone-hands-on/
Well it looks like we have a surprise guest at Showstoppers tonight. Lenovo just dropped by with its just-announced K800 -- the first Intel-powered smartphone to see the light of day. The beastly 4.5-inch 720p device sample that the company had on-hand is running a highly modified version of Android, and while the interface may not look familiar, the overall app experience shouldn't be much different from what you're used to. The official spec list includes a 1.6GHz Intel Medfield processor, Android 2.3, a TFT display and an 8 megapixel camera with a maximum sensitivity of ISO 3200. For now, the K800 is compatible with WCDMA HSPA+ and was running on AT&T's 3G network -- there's no word of LTE on this version, which seems logical considering that the 4G network is a bit hard to come by in Lenovo's native China, where the device is expected to launch first. Naturally, there's also 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS connectivity. We'll be bringing you more on what's undoubtedly the hottest gadget of the evening in the days to come, but jump past the break for an early look at the world's first Medfield smartphone.Gallery: Lenovo K800 Intel Medfield smartphone hands-on
Update: With no access to Android Market, our benchmarking abilities were somewhat limited. We did manage to run SunSpider on the K800 though, which yielded a score of 1,971 -- just a hair faster than the 1,985 that we saw on the Galaxy Nexus.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/fxis-cotton-candy-gets-a-taste-of-ubuntu-we-go-hands-on/
This petite stick of USB-HDMI actually houses a ARM Corex A9 dual-core processor and is capable of running its own OS. But then, you knew that already, right? So what's new? Well, it's now capable of running both Android Ice Cream Sandwich and we've got Ubuntu running on the show floor. The dongle can connect to these operating systems through the USB connection and while Cotton Candy itself has no internal memory, it can all be stored on micro-SD. There's still the Ubuntu hiccups that are to be expected, but the prototype device still deals out a Firefox browser and the usual Ubuntu niceties. Marvel at Gingerbread-powered Angry Birds on a MacBook, or widescreen Ubuntu and ICS. They're all in our gallery after the break.FXI's Cotton Candy gets a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich and Ubuntu, we go hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 21:23:00 EDT. Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/benq-xl2420t-xl2420tx-gaming-monitors-to-north-america/
BenQ's XL2420T and XL2420TX gaming LCDs have been around the block a time or two, but the outfit's taking advantage of this week's Consumer Electronics Show to launch 'em both here in North America. The range is available across quite a few screen sizes (17-, 19-, 21.5-, 22-, 23- and 24-inch), with pricing hitting around the $500 to $600 mark. A bit pricey at first blush, but what'd you really expect for a monitor that's certified as NVIDIA 3D Vision 2-ready? Exactly.Continue reading BenQ brings XL2420T and XL2420TX gaming monitors to North America

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/moboplay-allegedly-the-worlds-smallest-1080p-media-player-a/
At only 60mm by 64mm the Moboplay from HSTi is impressively tiny. Even more impressive is that this diminutive package is able to playback full 1080p video, in a variety of formats, on your TV via HDMI. There's a USB port and an SD card slot up front for loading media from, but you can also plug in the company's Wireless Media Stick for streaming videos straight from your phone, tablet, NAS or other connected device.
