drag2share: AT&T expands LTE coverage to eleven new markets, including NYC, San Francisco and Los Angeles

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/atandt-expands-lte-coverage-to-eleven-new-markets/

In one announcement, AT&T has nearly doubled its LTE coverage by officially flipping the switch on eleven new markets. The list of cities includes New York City metro, San Francisco / Oakland / San Jose, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, Raleigh and Austin. We've seen the service flicker on and off in most of these cities as real-life tests were conducted, and the high-speed connection's also been available in certain parts of New York, but it's great to see these become official. AT&T also declared that LTE expansion should be complete by the end of 2013, though we expect most major cities to be hit far earlier. Check out the full press release for more details.

drag2share: Canon PowerShot G1X leaks: 14.3 MP sensor, 28-112mm lens and still a compact

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/canon-powershot-g1x-leaks-14-3-mp-sensor-28-112mm-lens-and-sti/

Another camera has snuck out to delight us ahead of CES and it's another tempting chunk of camera. Canon's new flagship compact, the Powershot G1X packs a 14.3 megapixel sensor alongside a 28-112mm lens capable of f/2.5. The compact will apparently be capable of RAW photo output, 1080p video capture. It will also manage more advanced features like we've seen on the PowerShot series' S100, like multi-area white balance, while you can also expect high-speed burst shooting at full resolution. What we don't know is what the G1X will look like. Will follow the wolf-in-sheep's-clothing looks of the S95 and S100 or go for something a little more... dynamic? Expect to see more on this in just a few days.

drag2share: Pioneer unveils world's smallest and lightest external Blu-ray burner

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/pioneer-unveils-worlds-smallest-and-lightest-external-blu-ray-b/

BDR-XD04
When describing the current fleet of BD burners on the market, one word that certainly doesn't come to mind -- sleek. Pioneer is aiming to change all that, though, with the BDR-XD04. What it lacks in a catchy name it makes up for with a slim and light clamshell design that doesn't make too many sacrifices in the features department. At just under 8.5oz and 0.55 inches thick, it puts most of its competitors to shame. Now, it settles for just a 6x write speed and skips USB 3.0 in favor of the more common (and slower) 2.0, but it is capable of drawing power entirely from your machines peripheral ports. (Though, you'll have the option of hooking up an AC adapter if you wish.) And don't worry about format support -- the BDR-XD04 will handle everything from quad-layer 128GB BD-Rs to old-school CDs with aplomb. The slim new burner will start shipping in the middle of this month for $150. Full PR is after the break.

drag2share: RIM reportedly scraps the Colt and Milan, leaving London as sole BlackBerry 10 device?

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/rim-cancels-blackberry-colt/

And then there was... one? BGR is reporting that the folks at Research in Motion have not only scrapped plans for the BlackBerry Colt, originally expected to be the first BlackBerry 10 superphone out of the gate, but the rumored Milan as well (which was also reported by N4BB). If true, this would leave the BlackBerry London as the one and only QNX-based device in the works, suggesting RIM is taking a huge gamble by putting all of its eggs in one basket when it launches the new OS later this year. Additionally, the site reports that the London will have a slightly different design from the prototype leaked a couple months ago, and that the Milan wasn't actually a BlackBerry 10 device at all, but instead was supposed to run OS 7. Remember this is all according to "people familiar with the matter," which means the rumor is completely unconfirmed at this time.

drag2share: Unnecto TAPs into dual-SIM market, lets you do double GSM duty with a touch

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/unnecto-taps-into-dual-sim-market-lets-you-do-double-gsm-duty-w/

Heard of Unnecto? Neither have we. But if you're oh-so-important enough to be toting around more than one phone on more than one carrier, you might want to stop, drop (some dough) and TAP -- as the company's latest smartphone is known. This sixth in a line of dual-SIM offerings is the outfit's first to offer touchscreen functionality and packs a quadband GSM radio that should make your globe- and frequency-hopping a little more efficient. No pricing or release details have yet been announced, but if you're really keen to wield this handset, you can just leave all of that tedious busywork to your office-locked assistant. Check the official presser after the break.

drag2share: Motorola's Connected Home Gateway makes your house smarter, turns it into a 4Home

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/motorolas-connected-home-gateway-makes-your-house-smarter-turn/

4Home
The world of home automation is one full of disparate, fragmented pieces often requiring high-dollar contractors with trucks full of adapters. Motorola's been trying to streamline that with its 4Home standard and the company's latest attempt at smarthome synchronicity has just been unveiled. It's called the Connected Home Gateway and it looks like your average wireless router, but it's actually much more than that -- according to Moto's press release, anyway, which promises the thing can easily tie together home security, automation and climate control into a single, petite box. Once harmonized, the whole package is said to be easily accessible from a mobile device, something that might help homeowners relax a bit more while on vacation -- or while covering a major convention in Las Vegas. We're still lacking a lot of details here (like, how exactly do all these devices connect to the thing) but we'll try to get a demo and more details as soon as possible.

drag2share: Sensics Natalia head-tracking 3D goggles work alone or with PCs, consoles and phones

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/sensics-natalia-head-tracking-3d-goggles/

Well, it looks like Sensics is going to give Sony some competition in the high-end, head-mounted display arena with a new 3D head-mounted display. Like the HMZ-T1, Sensics' Natalia headset has dual OLED screens and can connect to consoles, PCs, or phones to let you see your favorite movies and games in 3D. Unlike the Sony, Natalia sports higher-res 1280 x 1024 screens, and isn't simply a display: it has a 1.2GHZ dual-core CPU and 1GB of memory, an SD card slot, WiFi, Bluetooth, and runs Android 4.0. That means that it can be used as a standalone device, and the company's libSensics app programming interface gives devs the tools needed to create software for the new platform. Oh, and did we mention that Sensics' headset does 360-degree head tracking, and can track your hands to allow for immersive AR user experiences (think Minority Report). The final feather in her cap? Though Natalia can run on DC power, she also has hot-swappable batteries so you aren't tethered to an outlet. Sensics isn't telling how much this nifty bit of kit will cost, but the company's aiming for a late 2012 release and will be showing the headset off at CES next week -- where we'll be getting hands on with it and will let you know how well (and if) it works.

drag2share: Broadcom befriends Sling and Myriad, outs new set-top and streaming chips

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/broadcom-befriends-sling-and-myriad-outs-new-set-top-and-stream/

Busy days at Broadcom, which has already forgotten about its earlier 5G WiFi announcement and launched a barrage of new chips for set-top boxes and home networking. The line-up supports the latest MoCA 2.0 standard for greater network bandwidth over coax wiring, but even more interesting is what some of the SoCs can do for smart TV and streaming. The BCM7425 dual-tuner HD gateway SoC will support Sling Media's "place-shifting" platform, potentially making it easier for set-top manufacturers to enable TV streaming to mobile devices. A similar deal has been inked with Myriad over its clever Alien Vue software (shown above), allowing Broadcom-equipped boxes to run apps designed for Google TV and HTML 5 without the need for extra dedicated hardware. In short, if your service provider fails to make TV content smarter or easier to access in 2012, they won't be able to blame it on Broadcom. Further details in the PR combo after the break and at the source link.

drag2share: Optrix VideoPro brings extreme data to your mundane iPhone clips

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/optrix-videopro-brings-extreme-data-to-your-mundane-iphone-clip/

Optrix ViideoPro
"Extreme" mounts and cases for capturing video with your iPhone are a dime a dozen, but Optrix is offering something a little extra with its VideoPro app. When it becomes available later this month (for $9.99) the iOS video AR tool will lay all sorts of data over recordings of both your exciting and mundane activities -- including speed, lap time and g-force. (The latter very important for when you launch yourself off the couch and towards the fridge.) Optrix has been teasing us with demo clips since early December, but now it seems it's finally gearing up to unleash the app for real... though an actual date would be much appreciated. We'll be back with some hands-on from CES but, until then, check out the PR after the break.

drag2share: Lenovo and VIA Technologies A30 internet TV set top box bumps up your boob tube's IQ

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/lenovo-and-via-technologies-a30-internet-tv-set-top-box-bumps-up/

Lenovo's known for making quality computers, but the company's plans for a television set top box have been in the works for months, and now the day has finally come. Lenovo, along with VIA Technologies, has launched the A30 internet TV device that packs a 1.2GHz VIA Nano CPU and VX900 media processor. Further hardware details are scarce at this point, but we do know that the A30 will have a BesTV service providing new and exclusive content, including movies of unknown origin "within a month of their release date," along with picture-in-picture functionality and, of course, internet access. There's mobile functionality too, as your smartphone can serve as both the box's remote and as an additional screen on which to view content. Naturally, Lenovo's not telling how much it'll cost, but our friends in the Far East will be able to pick one up in Q1 of 2012. PR after the break.

drag2share: Verizon's Galaxy Nexus gets one-click root and unlock (updated)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/verizon-galaxy-nexus-root-unlock/

You've got a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. You're eager to obtain superuser permissions, but don't want to fuss with command lines? Listen up: a one-click solution has been posted to the forums over on AndroidCentral to help make the process a bit easier. Developed by WugFresh, the Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit automatically installs the superuser.apk and ClockworkMod Recovery to give you total control over Google's sexy new superphone -- not to mention one step closer to installing your favorite ROM. The tool can also easily undo your lazy work, removing the aforementioned software and restoring the OEM-lock. The utility runs on Windows PCs and, for the time being, only supports Verizon's iteration of the newest Nexus; the posting promises a GSM compatible version soon. Hit the source link if you're interested.

Update: It should be noted that the Galaxy Nexus, as with all Nexus phones, can be unlocked fairly easily using the OEM unlock command via the Android SDK. This one-click solution merely automates the process.

drag2share: Corning to show off Gorilla Glass 2 at CES 2012

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/corning-gorilla-glass-2-ces/

Gorilla Glass is tough, real tough. And it's got a solid reputation as a durable screen for small and large displays alike. But by no means is it perfect, and Corning has been hard at work to make the product's sequel even better. We're pretty dry on the details so far, but Corning SVP / GM James Steiner mentioned that his company's positioned to meet the challenge of accommodating phones and tablets with more functionality from thinner designs. We'll find out a lot more information about the latest version of the glass in an announcement this coming Monday at CES, so stay tuned as we find out the juicy tidbits.

drag2share: Google Ditches Intel For Next Generation Of Google TV Boxes (GOOG)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/arm-google-tv-boxes-2012-1

GoogleTV

For its next generation of GoogleTV boxes debuting at next week's Consumer Electronics Show, Google has ditched Intel and teamed up with Marvell on a new ARM-based chipset, SlashGear reports via Marvell.

The new GoogleTV boxes will be cheaper, faster, 3D-ready, and capable of decoding two 1080p HD video.

The boxes will also make your standard definition TV look even better using upscaling technology.

Another perk of the new chipsets will be that new GoogleTV boxes won't need fans to cool down their processors. Past GoogleTV boxes using Intel chips (like the ill-fated Logitech Revue) were noisy, hot, and distracting.

drag2share: Are You Having Problems With iMessage? Try This (AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/imessage-bug-2012-1

iMessage

We love Apple's new iMessage. When it works.

However, if you ever decide to ditch your iPhone for an Android phone or other device, you won't receive texts from those you were previously using iMessage with.

TechCrunch points to this forum on Apple's website, where former iPhone owners are already complaining about the problem.

It's definitely a real. I experienced it last month when I used my iPhone's SIM card to run the unlocked Galaxy Nexus I reviewed. When I went back to the iPhone, I had a bunch of missed iMessages waiting for me.

Fortunately, one user in the Apple forums came up with a fix:

  1. Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
  2. Log in [with your Apple ID] if not already logged in.
  3. Click on "edit products"
  4. Click on the "x" to the right of the product.
  5. Click "unregister"

As an alternative, you can turn off iMessage from Settings > Messages. You can also tell people sending you iMessages to start sending you regular texts. All they have to do it tap and hold the blue speech bubble of an iMessage, then choose to resend it as a SMS.

Here's what that Apple support page looks like:
