drag2share: Samsung announces three Wave handsets, dripping in Bada 2.0 and ChatON

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/30/samsung-announces-three-wave-handsets-dripping-in-bada-2-0-and/

It's shaping up to a be a busy IFA for Samsung. Barely 24 hours after announcing its new ChatON messaging client, the manufacturer is now gearing up to release a troika of new Bada 2.0-powered Wave handsets -- the Wave 3, Wave M and Wave Y -- set to make their debut this week in Berlin. Leading the pack is the Wave 3, which leaked earlier this week. Powered by a 1.4GHz processor, this little guy boasts a 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, 3GB of memory (along with a 32GB microSD slot) and a five megapixel, auto-focus-enabled shooter. The Wave M, meanwhile, packs slightly less juice, with a 832MHz processor, a 3.65-inch WVGA screen and 150MB of onboard storage (with a 2GB inbox and 32GB microSD slot). Rounding out the collection is the Wave Y, with its 3.2-inch HVGA display, 832MHz engine and two megapixel camera. All three feature your usual smattering of WiFi / Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities and will ship with ChatON and Samsung's Social Hub baked into their DNA. No word yet on pricing or availability, but you can find out more in the full press release, after the break.

drag2share: CHART OF THE DAY: Corporate Efficiency Is Getting Absurd

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-corporate-efficiency-is-getting-absurd-2011-8

U.S. corporate profits and efficiency are getting absurd.

On Friday we saw record quarterly profits of $1,450 billion, making up a record share of GDP at 10.1%. We're also at record corporate efficiency of $15,278.72 -- up 22.3% from last year -- according to Sageworks Inc.

That last one says it all. Rampant job cuts and salary cuts, with new responsibilities for old workers, during the recession turned corporations into profit-making machines. Stimulative policies from the government and the Federal Reserve helped plenty. New technology also helps with efficiency.

Unfortunately there are no signs that corporations are turning revenue into jobs. See 14 of the biggest job-cutting companies >

drag2share: Asus Will Lead the Onslaught of MacBook Air-Cloning Ultrabook Spam [Asus]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5835387/asus-will-lead-the-onslaught-of-ultrabook-spam

Asus Will Lead the Onslaught of MacBook Air-Cloning Ultrabook SpamIntel's ultrabook spec is one of the best things the PC market has going for it right now. Asus, excited by this, plans to release five to seven new models of the slim, powerful PCs in the next year. Overkill?

Though range of models will range in price between $800 and $2000, they'll all fundamentally resemble the Core i7-packing Asus UX21, which has the MacBook Air in its crosshairs. Still though, does a company need to release 7 separate models in a single year?

Too often, PC makers think there need to be a million different options in every laptop class. Hopefully "five to seven" just means there will be spec variations on 2 or 3 main products. If not, get ready to start swimming in a sea of ultrabooks once the likes of Sony and Acer and (maybe?) HP jump into the mix. [FT via TIMN]

drag2share: LG Display cuts spending targets for 2012, amid sagging LCD demand

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/29/lg-display-cuts-spending-targets-for-2012-amid-sagging-lcd-dema/

LG Display has decided to drastically cut its expenditure target for 2012, in yet another sign that the LCD market is going through some tough times. Today, the manufacturer announced that it will spend only three trillion won (about $2.8 billion) on its production facilities next year -- a 33 percent decrease from its previously revised budget and LG Display's lowest expenditure target since 2009. The company also said that it has no plans to build a new LCD plants in 2012, suggesting that it may already be facing excess panel supply. Analysts are predicting that demand will remain subdued throughout the end of 2011, though LG Display CFO James Jeong had previously said he expects things to pick up by the beginning of next year.

drag2share: dupeGuru Music Edition Removes Duplicate Audio Tracks by Name, Tag, or Content [Download Of The Day]

Source: http://lifehacker.com/5834631/dupeguru-music-edition-removes-duplicate-audio-tracks-by-name-tag-or-content

dupeGuru Music Edition Removes Duplicate Audio Tracks by Name, Tag, or Content Mac/Windows/Linux: dupeGuru is a free, open source, and cross-platform utility that will scan and help you remove duplicate audio files from your music library. The app uses filename, creation date, tag information and metadata, and even the audio fingerprint of the file to determine which songs are duplicates, even if they're named differently.

dupeGuru ME (Music Edition) supports most popular audio file formats, including MP3, OGG, and both traditional and lossless AAC and WMA (notably absent is FLAC, unfortunately.) Once installed, point the app at the folder where your music lives, and tell it to match dupes by filename, tags, file content, or audio content (audio fingerprint.) The app also supports complex search filters, and lets you add regular expressions or other logic to make sure you catch everything you're looking for.

When dupeGuru finds duplicates, it presents them to you to decide what to do with them. You can delete it immediately, move it elsewhere for further review, or even play the file right there to test it. If your music library is big enough that using your favorite player's "find duplicates" feature just isn't cutting it anymore, dupeGuru ME may be worth a look.

drag2share: Use Amazon WebPay to Meet Rewards Card Minimum Spending Requirements [Money]

Source: http://lifehacker.com/5835072/use-amazon-webpay-to-meet-rewards-card-minimum-spending-requirements

Use Amazon WebPay to Meet Rewards Card Minimum Spending RequirementsMany upper level rewards credit cards have minimum monthly spending requirements, such as the AMEX Business Gold with it's $2,000 minimum. If you live a frugal lifestyle and don't have a mortgage it can be difficult to ensure you spend that much every month. You can always buy gift cards, but even easier is using fee-free Amazon Webpay to transfer money from your card to a spouse, family member, or business partner.

Amazon provides the Webpay service at no charge; since many people will spend payments received at Amazon immediately rather than withdrawing the funds to their bank, Amazon retains enough of the payments to make it worth their while. The minimum to withdraw to a bank from Amazon payments is $10, but you can send Amazon gift certificates for amounts as little as $1.

Say you've only spent $1500 for the month and your minimum spending limit is $2,000—as long as you have a spouse, family member, friend, or business partner you trust, you can send them $500 which they can then almost immediately send back to you. This can really help if you still haven't met your minimum limit after charging your groceries, gas, utilities, and other expenses to your card.

drag2share: Digital Projection debuts new native ultrawidescreen projector

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/27/digital-projection-debuts-new-native-ultrawidescreen-projector/

1080p projectors and displays are sweet, but since movie lovers are watching content in ratios closer to 2.35:1 than the 16:9 layout of tradition HD projectors and PJs and wasting precious pixels Digital Projection International's latest beamer is set up to be all about ultrawidescreen. The dVision Scope 1080p is 2560 x 1080 out of the box, no anamorphic lens necessary. its custom firmware automatically detects and resizes when the letterbox black bars to fill the 1080p field by increasing the number of horizontal pixels. Check the specs and explanation in the press release after the break, we'll find out more about this and probably many other projectors at CEDIA 2011 in September.

Here's Why You Shouldn't Make Phone Calls During the HurricaneWant to know why cell networks got clogged and choked during the earthquake? A one minute phone call is 460,800% larger than a single text. So with our next natural disaster this week, use SMS. For everyone's sake.

Simple math: its 720 KB for a minute of calling, and 0.15625 KB for a text.

MAJOR CAVEAT: if you're experiencing an emergency, absolutely use a telephone to get in touch with the appropriate authorities. But those "omg can you believe it's raining?" thoughts floating in your head? Try transcribing them instead of talking them out.

drag2share: Sony NEX-FS100 review

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/sony-nex-fs100-review/

We've been uncommonly keen to get our hands on the Sony NEX-FS100 ever since we first heard about it back in March. You see, this is no ordinary camcorder. Its spec sheet reads like a liturgy of filmmakers' prayers: a large Super 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor, interchangeable lenses, XLR inputs and proper, professional controls. Sure, it comes with a $6,600 price tag to match, but it also heralds a trend that should ultimately benefit pros and ordinary gadget denizens alike: the arrival of big, bold DSLR-style optics within dedicated camcorders. How do these optics effect the quality of the NEX-FS100's footage? Plant yourself somewhere comfortable and click past the break to find out.

drag2share: Exclusive: HTC Holiday for AT&T in the wild -- 4G LTE, 1.2GHz, 4.5-inch qHD display

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/27/exclusive-htc-holiday-for-atandt-in-the-wild-4g-lte-1-2ghz-4/

Looks like AT&T's fall lineup will include at least one slab of irresistible. The so-called HTC Holiday is indeed real, and it'll soon be gracing Ma Bell's airwaves -- and not just the HSPA+ ones, either. We've confirmed that the Holiday will be amongst the first handsets to launch in AT&T's LTE markets, bringing with it a rather gargantuan frame, a 4.5-inch qHD touchpanel, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of memory, an 8 megapixel rear camera (with flash), 1.3 megapixel front-facing shooter, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and a foursome of capacitive touch buttons below the panel. Software wise, it'll ship with Android 2.3.4 and HTC Sense 3.0, and while we haven't been able to nail it down with 100 percent certainty, there's a better-than-average chance it'll go by "Waikiki" upon launch -- if "Holiday" doesn't work out, that is. We'll be bringing you more as it arrives; for now, cut loose in the gallery below!

drag2share: Drift HD helmet cam review

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/25/drift-hd-helmet-cam-review/

What a difference a year makes, yeah? 13 months ago, we were giving Drift Innovation's latest helmet cam (the HD170) a run through the gauntlet, and now, we're giving that unit's proper successor the same treatment. The simply-named Drift HD action camera is largely the same type of device, albeit one that's 25 percent shorter (this one's just four inches long) and offers a replaceable lens. Moreover, there's a waterproof casing that's on the way, though said shell wasn't ready during our testing phase. The company managed to include a 300-degree rotating lens (complete with a 170-degree field of view) and a couple of capture options: 1080p/30fps and 720p/60fps. The concept should be well-ingrained into the head of technophiles by this point: if you're looking for a camera to mount upside your noggin' (or on your vehicle of choice), this is what you're after. But is the new and improved Drift HD capable of taking on the GoPros of the world while justifying its $369 asking price? Read on.

drag2share: Panasonic Lumix FX90 point-and-shoot packs built-in WiFi, Android / iPhone app compatibility

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/panasonic-lumix-fx90-point-and-shoot-packs-built-in-wifi/

For many photographers, in-camera WiFi may be an attractive feature before you leave the store, but confusing setup and limited functionality reduce its appeal once you actually go and try to use it. Panasonic sets out to better take advantage of wireless connectivity with its Lumix FX90, adding Android and iPhone app support for transferring pictures and video directly to a mobile device, then uploading them to Lumix Club -- a cloud-based photo-sharing service -- and on to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. You can also share photos directly from the camera -- a dedicated WiFi button launches a menu prompting you to select a sharing service -- but app support brings the added benefit of your phone's data connection. Beyond those new wireless features, the FX90 includes a 12 megapixel CCD sensor, 5x, 24-120mm optical zoom lens, 3-inch touchscreen, and 1080i AVCHD video capture. The FX90 will ship this fall with pricing yet to be announced, but jump past the break for the full rundown from Panasonic in the meantime.
