drag2share: Panasonic Lumix FZ150 builds on FZ47 superzoom, adds CMOS sensor, 1080p video

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/panasonic-lumix-fz150-builds-on-fz47-superzoom-adds-cmos-sensor/

Last month, Panasonic's Lumix FZ47 made some (rather subtle) waves with its full manual video mode, lettering you control aperture and shutter speed while capturing in 1080i. Now, the company just announced its higher-end FZ150, which replaces last year's FZ100, adding 1080p AVCHD capture, a stereo mic with noise cancellation, and a 12 fps burst mode. Image-related improvements include a 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, 25-600mm (24x) f/2.8-5.2 Leica lens with nano surface coating, faster autofocus, a new Venus Engine FHD Pro processor, and sensitivity up to ISO 3200. The FZ150 retains its predecessor's 3-inch LCD and 0.2-inch EVF -- both also present on the FZ47. There's also a new side-lever control, letting you adjust zoom and focus with secondary levers positioned just to the left of the lens. Panasonic's latest superzoom cam will ship in late September with a $500 sticker price. PR after the break.

drag2share: Tampa Bay Buccanneers to use iPads as playbooks, not PlayBooks

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/tampa-bay-buccanneers-to-use-ipads-as-playbooks-not-playbooks/

With the NFL season just a few days away, players and coaches have been busy lifting weights, doing interviews and counting their money. Sometimes, they even get the chance to study their playbooks -- or, in the case of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their iPads. This year, the franchise has distributed a fresh batch of iPad 2's to all of its 90 players, as part of a new initiative from coach Raheem Morris. With the tablets, the Bucs can spend their free time reviewing their downloaded plays, while analyzing video footage from practices, games and opposing teams. In related tech news, the Detroit Lions just discovered fire.

drag2share: Sony's AR tool lets you put big screens in small apartments (video)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/25/sonys-ar-tool-lets-you-put-big-screens-in-small-apartments-vid/

It may not be a slick as Panasonic's dream-TV AR app, but at least Sony's keeping up with the competition. Live from the company's UK outfit is an online AR tool enabling you, dear reader, to visualize all sorts of boob tubes you can (and can't) afford. After printing, affixing and photographing a marker, prospective buyers can get a better sense of what sets fit in their humble abodes. Interested in giving it a go? Mosey on past the break for PR and a video, and then hop beyond the source link to begin your adventure.

[Thanks, Matt]

drag2share: AMD 990FX motherboards from Asus, ASRock and Gigabyte get rounded up and ranked

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/25/amd-990fx-motherboards-from-asus-asrock-and-gigabyte-get-rounde/

HotHardware just herded up a trio of new mainboards equipped with AMD's 990FX chipset, which will support those famed 8-core Bulldozer-based processors when they finally arrive, as well as being compatible with existing Phenom II and Athlon II chips. All the boards had similarly high performance, good connectivity and plenty of overclocking and tweaking potential. However, the $229 Asus CrossHair V Formula inched its way to overall victory thanks to its reliability, attractive build and smart layout. The ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Professional placed second despite being cheaper at $200 and having richer connectivity, including FireWire and a front-mountable USB 3.0 panel. Finally, the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7 lagged behind due to its excessive $250 price tag, a lack of color coding to help guide less experienced builders, plus an ugly and outdated BIOS utility. So, there you have it: if you want to gear up for your next Bulldozer-ready AMD build, the Asus and ASRock 990FX boards are ripe for picking. Check out the source link for the full comparisons and benchmarks.

drag2share: Droid Bionic teases boot sequence, LTE prowess to anxious onlookers (video)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/25/droid-bionic-teases-boot-sequence-lte-prowess-to-anxious-onlook/

That's right folks, the Droid Bionic is back with another leaked appearance. This time it stars in a video clip that reveals the phone's boot sequence, which is followed by an all-important thrill ride / speed test on Verizon's LTE network. As if you needed further proof, this Moto reveals itself to pack dual cores, and as you might expect, it sports Motorola's animation-laden skin. What about the LTE test, you ask? It pulls in respectable numbers -- approximately 4.5Mbps down and 1.9Mbps up -- but as you're likely aware, these speeds pale in comparison to what we've seen on the Droid Charge and Revolution. It's entirely possible the test is simply an outlier, so we'll hope for better scores as the phone approaches its September arrival. Curious for the sneak peak? You'll find the full video after the break.

[Thanks, Tu]

drag2share: CHART OF THE DAY: Android Is The Number One Mobile Target For Malware

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-mobile-virus-android-2011-8

As Android grows in popularity, so do attacks from malware on Android phones. A new report from McAfee says Android is now the number one mobile target for malware. Apple's iOS is targeted so little that it's not even in the McAfee report.

drag2share: Nikon announces Coolpix P7100, ruggedized AW100 and four S-series point-and-shoots

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/nikon-announces-coolpix-p7100-aw100-ruggedized-and-four-s-seri/

Camera manufacturers seem to have forgone the straw method for deciding which order to push out their press releases this time around, opting for old-fashioned alphabetical order instead. Yesterday Canon announced a trio of new PowerShots, and now Nikon is doubling down with six new cams, to be followed very soon by ... another company later this morning. First off the assembly line is the $500 Coolpix P7100, with its 10.1 megapixel CCD sensor, 7.1x zoom lens, 921k-dot tilting LCD, and manual controls. Photogs looking to jump in the pool, point-and-shoot in tow will probably be more interested in the $380 AW100, which includes a 16 megapixel CMOS sensor, 5x lens, 1080p video capture, built-in GPS, and water resistance to 33 feet. Next up is the $430 S1200pj (pj, for projector). We've never actually seen anyone using the built-in projector in Nikon's digicams, but it's a fun gimmick nonetheless. This model adds iOS compatibility, letting you project 60-inch iPad videos at a whopping 20 lumens. It also has a 14.1 megapixel sensor, 5x zoom, 720p video, and a 3-inch LCD.

If style is your game, the $300 S100's sleek design won't go unnoticed, regardless of whether you opt for red, black, purple and gold (oh, definitely go with the gold). There's also a 16 megapixel sensor, 5x zoom, 1080p video, and 3D capture. If a superzoom is in the cards, the $330 S8200 is worth a look, with its 14x Nikkor lens, 16.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, 1080p video, and 3-inch 921k-dot LCD. Its thinner sibling, the S6200 is also less expensive, retailing for $230. You'll need to settle for a 10x optical zoom, 16 megapixel sensor, 720p video, and a 2.7-inch LCD, however. All six digicams are slated to ship in September. Jump past the break for a trio of Nikon press releases, detailing each model.

drag2share: Sony unveils NEX-7: 24.3 MP sensor, OLED viewfinder, $1199 price tag (video)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-unveils-nex-7-24-3-mp-sensor-oled-viewfinder-1199-price/

During our trip to Sony HQ earlier this summer to check out the NEX-C3, company reps hinted that the best was yet to come -- and held true to their word. Today's NEX-7 release breaks a handful of digicam records, becoming not only the first mirrorless camera to pack a 24.3 megapixel APS-C sensor, but the first APS-C cam of any shape and size to smash through this notable barrier -- potentially delivering unparalleled image quality for a camera of its size. Sony's new flagship mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (ILC) also features the same OLED viewfinder included with its brand-new Alpha A77, delivering XGA (1024 x 768-pixel) resolution directly to your eye. There's also 1080 / 60p AVCHD video capture, a full-size hot shoe, and a completely redesigned "Tri-Navi" interface. We spent a few minutes with a pre-production NEX-7 earlier this month -- jump past the break for our initial impressions.

drag2share: Exclusive: HTC Puccini in the wild, AT&T LTE support confirmed!

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/exclusive-htc-puccini-in-the-wild-atandt-lte-support-confirmed/

Have a gander. Take as long as you need. That, friends, is the AT&T-bound HTC Puccini, and it'll be the first tablet to hit Ma Bell with inbuilt LTE support. According to our sources, the Android-based slate is currently in testing, and should be hitting the markets in the not-too-distant future. 'Course, AT&T just started shipping its first two LTE devices, but having something other than a WWAN modem would certainly be appreciated. As for specs? We've confirmed that a 1.5GHz dual-core processor is onboard, alongside 1GB of RAM, Honeycomb, 16GB of storage, an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 10.1-inch WXGA touchpanel. We're digging for more as we speak, and will be updating accordingly. Meanwhile, feel free to peruse the gallery below -- oh, and that "smaller" device? That's the WiFi-only Flyer that we saw soar through the FCC in April. That'll be let loose on US shores next month, and we're sniffing around for a price as we speak.

[Thanks, Anonymous]

drag2share: Sony debuts the Handycam NEX-VG20

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-debuts-the-handycam-nex-vg20/

Add another model to the gadget deluge that was last night's Sony camera announcements. The electronics giant debuted the NEX-VG20, the followup to the admittedly snazzy NEX-VG10. The new interchangeable lens camcorder does full HD video and can capture 16 megapixel stills (including RAW support). The Handycam also rocks a three-inch LCD that can be rotated 270 degrees and a mic that supports stereo and 5.1 channel surround recordings. The camcorder will hit stores in November for $2,199 with an SEL18-200 F3.5-6.3 E-mount lens and $1,599 for just the body.

drag2share: HTC Bliss gets its clearest photo session yet, shows off front-facing camera

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/htc-bliss-gets-its-clearest-photo-session-yet-shows-off-front-f/

The HTC Bliss is undoubtedly going through the typical pre-launch routine: it's passed through the ranks of the FCC, received its first Blurrycam session, and now we're finally seeing the upcoming device up close and personal. The folks at XDA China got their hands on one and took a few high-quality images for the world to see, which means we're probably not too far away from the phone's forthcoming release. They confirmed that the Bliss will in fact run on HTC Sense 3.5, feature a front-facing camera, and that it will come in a variety of colors. So, will we find this on display at next week's HTC meetup? Or maybe our team will get some hands-on time at IFA? And will this "female-oriented" smartphone find a place with its intended demographic? Hopefully the wait is almost over.

drag2share: Sol Republic Tracks Headphones Review: Are $100 Headphones Allowed to Sound This Good? [Video]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5833381/sol-republic-tracks-headphones-review-are-100-headphones-allowed-to-sound-this-good

Sol Republic Tracks Headphones Review: Are $100 Headphones Allowed to Sound This Good?Sol Republic is a new headphone company whose roots lie in a product you're all well familiar with: Beats by Dre. But unlike those $400, bass-happy cans, the Tracks headphones only cost $100.

Why It Matters

When it comes to headphones that aren't earbuds, Sol Republic thinks up until now you had two options: Buy a relatively crappy pair for somewhere around $50-75, or shell out at least $200 for a decent pair. At $100 Sol Republic has positioned their Tracks headphones firmly between those two classes.

drag2share: Verzo teases its first Android smartphone, aims for a late-September launch

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/verzo-teases-its-first-android-smartphone-aims-for-a-late-septe/

Ready to check out a phone brand you've never seen or heard of before? Of course you are. We just got our hands on exclusive photos and details of a mysterious Android handset from Verzo, a newcomer to the market. The phone's called the Kinzo and is slated for a launch in late September. Verzo's keeping a tight lid on the specifics for right now, but we know the phone was designed by Novague and it'll feature its own UI -- not in an attempt to be different, it says, but "to get the most from the Android system."

The brand is playing the humility card in its release, claiming that it's not trying to change everything or be the next Samsung or Apple, nor is it going to be "the slimmest, fastest, or the best... for now." However, Verzo plans to be open to suggestions and actively involved in what its customers love and hate about its products. The company aims to first sell the Kinzo on its website, with shipments to the US and Europe shortly after; the rollout will continue in Russia, China, South America and the Middle East in late 2011 / early 2012. Verzo's definitely worked up a nifty teaser here, so how intrigued are you? Check out a few more images of the Kinzo below, and follow past the break for the company's press release.

drag2share: SOL Republic intros Amps and Tracks headphone lines, we go hands-on

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/sol-republic-intros-amps-and-tracks-headphone-lines-we-go-hands/

Oh my is this interesting. Monster Cable's VP of marketing Kevin Lee (a key figure involved with its Beats by Dre headphone line) has co-founded a new headphone company dubbed Soundtrack Of Life Republic, and we were able to get a very brief hands-on with some handmade prototypes. It's no secret that we're not fans of Monster around these parts, but being that SOL Republic isn't directly tied to it -- and because the headphones bring with them some interesting features without being crazy expensive -- we've decided to give them a quick whirl. It's all detailed just past the break.
