Samsung 9 Series and Sliding PC 7 Series quick hands-on (video)

It's been a crazy day, but we hope you didn't miss Samsung's Sliding PC 7 Series. The little laptop / tablet hybrid does just what the name suggests, with the display literally sliding over the keyboard. Of course, we had to get video of it in action, which you can enjoy after the break. Some pictures are below, too, both of the 7 Series and ultra-thin 9 Series. Needless to say, we're going back for seconds.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 first hands-on! (update: video)

Acer's ten-inch Tegra 2 tablet with Verizon LTE? You're looking at it right now, courtesy of the NVIDIA booth at CES 2011's Digital Experience show. It's just the same engineering prototype with an early build of Android 2.2 we've seen before -- it'll run Honeycomb at launch -- but this time, we got to touch. The hardware seriously feels final, with a solid metal case and a supremely responsive touchscreen that tracks a full ten points of contact. There's an interesting array of ports, too, with a full-sized USB port (as well as micro-USB) on one side and a dedicated charging socket too, as well as a dock connector on the bottom. What's missing are the standard Android Home, Menu and Back buttons, as instead of those, you simply swipe the lower right corner of the screen to bring up a tiny pane of virtual alternatives. No LTE connectivity to be found at Digital Experience, we're afraid, so we'll have to bring you speed tests another day -- but we'll have video up soon. For now, peep the gallery below.

BlackBerry PlayBook preview

We just played with a wonderful tablet, and it wasn't running Android, webOS, iOS, or even Windows. It was running a funky realtime operating system called QNX that RIM bought in April, combined with WebKit and a heaping helping of Flash, and plans on releasing to the world in Q1 of this year. The BlackBerry PlayBook is surprisingly polished and responsive at this stage, even though RIM says it has a lot of work to still left to do. In fact, the only thing frustrating about our roughly 30 minutes with the tablet (under the caring gaze of Mike Lazaridis) was the fact that you can't buy an actual BlackBerry phone right now that's anywhere near this enjoyable to use. Follow after the break as we talk through the product, along with a video walkthrough and stress test of that dual-core proc's multitasking chops.

Well we actually weren't able to play with the latest consumer Panasonic 3D camcorders ourselves, but we were able to get close enough to snap some pics and live vicariously through a stage model who did actually get to hold it. There's nothing small about the HDC-TM90, but it looks cool enough. The GF2 still camera is just as crazy looking and is sure to get you just as much attention if you walked about town with one.

Motorola Atrix 4G, HD multimedia dock, and laptop dock hands-on

Earlier today, we got a complete demo and some seat time with the Motorola Atrix 4G for AT&T at Motorola's CES event, including its HD multimedia dock and laptop dock. The phone looks similar to the Samsung Vibrant, but with a black screen bezel and a tastefully patterned matte back cover. Build quality is very good, as we'd expect from a Motorola device. The QHD (960 x 540) display is gorgeous and the phone feels ultra snappy, thanks to the dual-core processor running Froyo. In fact, despite still running preliminary firmware, we recorded a blazing 2,616 score on the Quadrant test. The power button at the top back of the Atrix 4G also serves as a fingerprint reader, and there's a dual-LED flash flanking the 5 megapixel camera. Apple's already put some basic gesture controls to use on its sixth generation iPod nano, but a recently published patent application suggests that it may have some grander designs for a no-look interface of sorts. As you can see above, Apple's using a nano in its illustrations for the patent, but the actual claims suggest that the gestures wouldn't necessarily require a screen at all -- possibly for something similar to that back-side interface that also turned up in an Apple patent application? As for the gestures themselves, they'd apparently involve things like a single tap to pause or play, a double tap to skip forward, a triple tap to skip back, and a circular motion to control the volume. Of course, that aforementioned patent application was published in 2007 and we've yet to see anything result from it, so you may not want to hold your breath for this one either.

Sony unveils new HomeShare network speakers, iPhone docks, and Wi-Fi universal remote

We haven't heard much about Sony's HomeShare wireless networking protocol since the initial buzz in 2008, but based on today's announcements, it's fairly clear that Sony intends to ramp things up in 2011. The SA-NS300 and SA-NS400 are two new wireless network speakers designed to broadcast tunes from a variety of sources such as DLNA-enabled PCs or BRAVIA internet music services found on Sony's latest Blu-ray players. iPhones and iPods can join in on the streaming fun when placed in HomeShare compatible NAS-SV20i and NAC-SV10i docks. Since all of these components go beyond the realm of your average IR controller, Sony has kindly released the HomeShare-friendly touch screen RMN-U1 Wi-Fi universal remote, too. Using its activity-based control options, the remote allows those invested in the HomeShare system to send music throughout their network and a view a variety of eye-candy -- you know, like album art. Even more interesting is that Sony says all of the components will be available this March for between $200 and $300 depending on the device, which is far below the four figure price points of its early HomeShare gear. NEC dual-screen Android Cloud Communicator LT-W hands-on

At CES, NEC's showing off the hinged Android tablet it teased last month, pitching it as a great way for third parties to... well, do awesome stuff. They're kind of leaving the doors wide open as to how (or to whom) it'll be sold, suggesting it could make a great e-reader, a digital notebook for students, a scrapbook, or whatever devs dream up. The "Cloud" part of the "Cloud Communicator" name means that NEC thinks the LT-W would be great for generic cloud services, but really, it's just an Android 2.1 tablet with WiFi, Bluetooth, and optional 3G -- there's nothing special in here that makes it particularly well-adapted for magically pulling data out of the cloud.

Unfortunately -- cloud or otherwise -- we didn't come away with a very positive impression of this thing. Our very first red flag was the stylus, which matches up with a pair of 800 x 600 resistive touchscreens that don't seem particularly bright or contrasty. Some of NEC's sample apps (which you can see in the video after the break) make decent use of the dual display setup, but nothing blew us away -- and more importantly, everything seemed just a little too jerky for a Cortex-A8 core. If NEC were to remix this with a Tegra 2, two capacitive touchscreens, and Honeycomb, we might be singing a different tune... but for now, this seems like little more than a Courier gone wrong.

Just yesterday, ASUS finally officially unveiled its brand new, IPS display-sporting EEE Slate EP121. If you can't remember yesterday, the EP121 boasts an Intel Core i5-470UM processor, up to 4GB of RAM, and a 64GB SSD all in a 12.1-inch package running Windows 7. This high end tablet is due later this month, but if you simply must pre-order one today, well, taht's now possible as it recently appeared at popular online retailer Amazon, for $999. Get over there!

Who Wants to Buy Cameron's House From Ferris Bueller's Day Off?So you failed to win the auction for Cameron Frye's Dad's red Ferrari last year. Now what? Well, if that $1.65 million is burning a hole in your pocket, you could always buy the glassy Ferris Bueller house, recently reduced.

It's just gone back on the market with a cool price-tag to match its cool, stark exterior (though the interior certainly looks more homely...just), and yes, the price even includes the infamous garage (above) which the Ferrari crashed through after Ferris and Cameron's day off.

UPDATE: Either it's been on the market since 2009, or the buyer has put it up for sale again. Whichever way, it's now a veritable bargain since it's dropped from $2.3 million. Hive five for the economy crash!
