drag2share: Packing in six times more storage density with the help of table salt

Source: http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-10-storage-density-table-salt.html

(PhysOrg.com) -- Dr Joel Yang from the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), a research institute of Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research, with collaborators from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Data Storage Institute (DSI) has developed a process that can increase the data recording density of hard disks to 3.3 Terabit/in2, six times the recording density of current models. The key ingredient in the much enhanced patterning method that he pioneered is sodium chloride, the chemical grade of regular table salt.

drag2share: Panasonic's 7- and 10-inch BizPads port the Honeycomb drizzle to Japan's enterprise set

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/14/panasonics-7-and-10-inch-bizpads-port-the-honeycomb-drizzle-to/

Salarymen, get those contactless employee IDs set to swipe. Panasonic's throwing your overcaffeinated ilk a bone with two Honeycomb-based enterprise slates for release this winter. Coming under the BizPad umbrella, these 7- and 10.1-inch Android 3.2 tablets are ruggedized for the road warrior treatment, offering the clumsy and sleep-deprived alike dust-, drop- and water-proof protection. Both tabs pack a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 16GB of onboard storage, 1GB RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC capability (via its IC card reader), but the shared specs end there. While the larger tab certainly wins out with its higher resolution, digitizer-friendly WXGA 1280 x 800 IPS capacitive display (vs. WSVGA 1024 x 600 resistive LCD display), the more diminutive of the bunch gets the better 5 megapixel camera (vs. 1.3 megapixel) and optional 3G connectivity. No word yet on pricing or an actual launch date, but don't let that stop you from petitioning your IT department right now.

drag2share: Get 50GB Free Storage for iOS [Storage]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5849581/boxnet-gives-ios-users-50gb-free-storage

Get 50GB Free Storage for iOSSure, iCloud gives you 5GB of free storage. How cute! Box.net just blew it out of the water. For the next 50 days, it is offering iOS users 50 GB of free storage. It's a pirate's bounty!

Not only is it a pretty sweet deal, but it's also one bereft of any significant fineprint. While a lot of offers like these expire after a certain term, or only open to new users, this one is neither. It's open to anyone, and lasts forever. Go get it. [Box.net via Mathew Ingram]

drag2share: Toshiba introduces tiny enterprise hard drives with big speed and big storage

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/toshiba-introduces-tiny-enterprise-hard-drives-with-big-speed-an/

HDDYou're probably laughing to yourself right now saying, "300GB? That's not big storage." But, hear us out. The oh-so memorably titled MK01GRRB and MK01GRRR are not your standard hard drives -- these are enterprise-grade disks that spin at 15k RPM and fit in a 2.5-inch bay. Toshiba claims they're the highest capacity 2.5-inch, 15k drives on the market, and we couldn't dig up any evidence to the contrary. The 6Gb/s SAS connection makes sure businesses get the most they can out of those platters spinning at break neck speeds and the GRRR models include a self-encrypting feature. The two drives will start shipping in both 147 and 300GB sizes in Q1 of 2012, but pricing has yet to be announced. Check out the PR after the break for a few more details.

Update: Seagate wrote in to let us know that they had a similar drive at the same size, capacity and speed earlier this year. So, take that, Tosh.

The leaves in your yard may be transitioning to the more subdued hues of autumn, but Nokia's new 603 smartphone certainly isn't. Available in six different back cover colors, this new Symbian Belle handset is powered by a 1GHz processor and boasts a 3.5-inch, capacitive touchscreen with 640 x 360 resolution. It also comes with 2GB of internal memory, a 32GB microSD slot and five megapixel camera, along with full NFC and Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities. Speaking of which, the folks in Espoo have also taken this opportunity to unveil their new Luna Bluetooth headset -- an NFC-enabled, in-ear accessory that delivers up to eight hours of extended talk time, as well as a rainbow of colors (see an image after the break). As far as pricing goes, the 603 will set you back €200 (about $275), with the Luna headset sitting at €70 (around $96). Neither will hit the market until Q4 of this year, but you can find more information in the full PR, looming after the break.

drag2share: Samsung confirms Ice Cream Sandwich event on October 19

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/samsung-confirms-ice-cream-sandwich-event-on-october-19/

Just like we'd heard, we'll be getting our first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich next week, on October 19th to be precise. Of course we've already had a whiff of what it looks like in a video, and sampling the new Music and Google+ apps gave us another good look. But now we're set to see it for real, and if all goes well we might just get some new hardware out of the deal, too. Will this be the day the Nexus Prime makes us think that flat smartphones are... well... square? We'll be there live to let you know as it happens.

The event takes place 10:00am HKT, which is conveniently 10:00pm EST on October 18th. A primetime liveblog and gadget unveiling? Can't wait.

drag2share: Adobe shows off new 'undo photo blur' feature

Source: http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-10-adobe-undo-photo-blur-feature.html

(PhysOrg.com) -- Despite all the advances in digital photography, most people are still plagued by the problem of blurry photos, a problem compounded by the use of cameras embedded in cell phones due to their small size. Problems of blurring generally can be divided into two types. The first is problems with focusing, which can usually be avoided if the camera operator will simply wait for the automatic focusing feature of their camera to do its job. The second type is much more difficult to solve as it involves camera movement while the image is being shot. It’s this second problem that Adobe has been working on as part of its Photoshop imaging software package. And based on a video shot by someone identified only as peterelst who posted it on Youtube, a recent demo of a new feature, or "sneak" as Adobe calls it, seems to indicate that they have made significant progress.

drag2share: Skip Past the Boring Intro on YouTube Videos with the Wadsworth Constant Bookmarklet [Bookmarklets]

Source: http://lifehacker.com/5849342/skip-past-the-boring-intro-on-youtube-videos-with-the-wadsworth-constant-bookmarklet

Skip Past the Boring Intro on YouTube Videos with the Wadsworth Constant BookmarkletHave you ever watched a YouTube video and thought, "The first 40 seconds of this was completely unnecessary?" With a simple bookmarklet, you can jump right to the 40% mark in the video so you can get to the good stuff.

The Wadsworth Constant, for those of you that don't know, is a joke slash genius discovery made on Reddit by a user named Wadsworth, who noted that the first 30 percent of every YouTube video is unnecessary, and you can usually just skip 30% of the way in to get to what you're looking for. While the Wadsworth Constant has become a fast-spreading internet meme, Redditor PublicRestrom notes that YouTube has actually added a feature to the site that incorporates the constant:

To apply the Wadsworth Constant to any Youtube video, put &wadsworth=1 at the end of the URL.

Surprisingly, the trick works, and even more surprisingly, so does the Wadsworth Constant—at least in many cases. In an effort to streamline the process, we put together a bookmarklet that you can just click from any YouTube page to immediately skip to the 30% mark in the video. Just drag this link into your bookmarks bar and go nuts. The JavaScript, for those of you that are curious, is:

javascript:location.search+=(location.search?'&':'?')+'wadsworth=1'

Give it a try for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments.

And so an internet celebrity was born... | Reddit

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/lg-optimus-slider-on-virgin-mobile-at-ctia-eanda-2011-we-go-hands/

Curiously enough, the prepaid market had as much of a field day at this week's CTIA Enterprise & Applications as anyone else; we already got our fair share of hands-on time with the Samsung Transfix for Cricket, and shortly afterward beheld our eyes (and mandibles) on the LG Optimus Slider, the latest beauty making a beeline to Virgin Mobile as early as this coming Monday. Aside from the obvious slide-out QWERTY, the Android 2.3.4 device will feature a 3.2-inch HVGA display, a 3.2MP camera and microSD support up to 32GB, and will be available without a contract for $200. Head underneath to take a look at the full image gallery and hands-on video.

drag2share: Apple reportedly trying to add movie streaming to its iCloud

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/apple-reportedly-trying-to-add-movie-streaming-to-its-icloud/

Apple's iCloud may have only just launched but according to rumors reported by the LA Times and Wall Street Journal, it's already negotiating with Hollywood to add movies to the service (funny how things have changed in five years.) The timing is particularly curious because Apple, along with Disney, is one of the notable holdouts from the movie studio-backed Ultraviolet scheme with similar buy once / stream anywhere aspirations that just hit the streets this week. However, according to "people familiar with the matter" it could allow Ultraviolet access on iThings via app, while also bringing its usual media lock-in magic by also throwing in streaming copies of any flicks purchased on iTunes, but only on its own hardware. Recently activated streaming of purchased TV shows to the Apple TV shows the cloud's potential, but we'll have to wait for deals to be signed before that North Carolina datacenter puts Hollywood's best on its to-do list.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/12/photo-stream-nhl-airplay-mirroring-and-more-added-to-apple-tv/

It got a bit overshadowed by Apple's other software updates earlier today, but Apple TV users also have a few new features to enjoy whenever they're ready to plop down on the couch. Version 4.4 of the Apple TV software is now available to download, which adds the new Photo Stream feature to view photos stored in iCloud, as well as AirPlay mirroring, plus content from the NHL and Wall Street Journal, and a new movie trailer section. You'll also now be able to view subtitles in Netflix (when available, of course), and you have a few new slideshow themes to choose from.

Sure, we knew this day was coming, but now the wait is finally over. Now the main question for T-Mobile customers at the end of their contract is whether to pick up the Samsung Galaxy S II or HTC Amaze 4G. Both handsets are now on sale from the carrier, running $229 and $259, respectively (plus plan, post-rebate, naturally). Thankfully, we've got a full review of the 4.52-inch Galaxy S II magenta edition and a hands-on with the 4.3-inch Amaze 4G, which should help make the deciding a bit easier.

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5849108/monoprice-makes-a-60-subwoofer-that-might-actually-be-worth-a-damn

Monoprice Makes a $60 Subwoofer that Might Actually Be Worth a DamnMonoprice, a website generally associated with peddling A/V cables on the cheap, also makes audio components on the cheap. And in a space where audio gear costs as much as houses, cheap speakers are normally ignored. But Monoprice's subwoofer may be the exception.

Cnet's Steve Guttenberg says that Monoprice's line of subs are wholly respectable, especially given the sub-$100 pricetags: $57 will net you an 8-inch, 60-watt sub, while $84 will get you a 12-inch, 150-watt boomer. Overall, Guttenberg preferred the smaller sub as it had good bass definition, even if lacking in power (it only goes down to 50Hz). The bigger sub, in his words, sounded sloppy, but had decent power. But all in all, they provide a cheaper alternative to systems upwards of $300. [Monoprice via Cnet]

You Can Actually Turn Your DNA Into Houseware DecorsIt's one thing to put your own personal touch into the appearance of your home. But basing your household aesthetic around your own unique DNA signature takes that idea up more than a few notches.

DNA11 wants to take the visual representation of your DNA and print it up on rugs, bowls, prints, wallpapers and waterwalls. They currently have a full-blown campaign going to raise awareness for their project. If enough people vote in favor of any of these products, they will send it into production.

But it wont be cheap. Rugs will range between $1000 and $5000. The Waterwall starts at $10000. The other two...I shudder to think of the prices, but I still want all of it! [DNA11]

We hadn't heard all that much about Evolio until this summer, when the Romanian company caught our attention with the Neura, a device it happily deemed the "most powerful Android tablet." The company has re-entered the scene with another bold claim, touting "the lightest notebook in the world." The 11.6-inch U9 is certainly on the smaller side of things, weighing in at around 2.2 pounds. Inside you'll find some rather netbooky specs, including a 1.6GHz Cedarview processor, 2GB of RAM and an SSD with either 64 or 128GB of storage. According to Evolio, the U9 is set for a December release.

Well, what is now known as the eVLC has been put through the EPA-certified ringer and come out boasting a jaw-dropping 245MPGe. Using the latest, more stringent, 5-cycle EPA tests the strange looking vehicle posted a miles-per-gallon equivalent almost 250-percent that of the Nissan leaf. The four-passenger eVLC also scored an impressive 114 mile range on its tiny 10.5 kWh battery (the Leaf gets 117 miles out of its 24 kWH battery) and sucked down a full charge in six hours from a standard 110v socket. Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/11/t-mobile-springboard-hands-on-at-ctia-eanda-2011-video/

CTIA Enterprise & Applications 2011 has blessed us with a 7-inch tablet by the name of the T-Mobile Springboard. Similar in look and feel to the HTC Flyer, this Huawei-made slate is just as easy to hold, though it's completely sans a fancy pen. The device has a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, runs on the latest version of Honeycomb (Android 3.2), and offers a 5MP rear camera with a 1.3MP front-facing shooter. We couldn't get any confirmation on pricing or availability, aside from being told to expect the Springboard sometime during the holiday season. That may not narrow the timeframe down as much as we'd like, but at least you know it's an idea for that holiday wish list you've been trying to put together. Head below for a full smorgasbord of pictures and a hands-on video.

Update: We were informed by T-Mobile at this evening's media event that the Springboard will debut for under $200, though no additional solid information is available yet.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/11/lapdock-100-brings-a-webtop-iq-boost-to-moto-phones-on-verizon/

Looking to harness all the power of your smartphone PC-style? Motorola is looking to help with its Lapdock 100 for a number of devices, including the Atrix 2, Photon 4G and Droid Bionic. The laptop shell sports a 10.1-inch screen (smaller and hopefully cheaper than the Atrix 4G's axed lapdock), keyboard with dedicated Android keys, touchpad, multi-tasking and tabbed web-browsing via WiFi or your phone's data plan. You'll also be able to utilize a full Firefox browser, Adobe Flash, Quick Office, Google Docs and a PC-esque File Manager. Just in case your smartphone's SD card doesn't offer enough storage space, the dock packs two USB ports for all those extra documents you might collect. Looking to stay ultra-portable, the peripheral weighs a hair over two pounds (less than 1Kg) and touts five hours of battery life -- which can also be used to recharge that tired handset if needed. If you're looking to snatch up one of these bad boys, you'll have to wait until October 17... and even then, it'll only hit shelves at AT&T. Verizon and Sprint customers will get their chance "later this quarter" and there's no word yet on pricing. Need more info? We've seen a few compatible apps leak out thanks to Google's early efforts to woo developers, but it's only now that we're getting the final add-on for the Android SDK. It brings a couple of revisions, like better placement options for the action and navigation bars, but more importantly it delivers the message that two-point-oh is almost two-point-here.

drag2share: Sony locks 93,000 PSN and SOE accounts due to 'massive' hack attempt

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/12/sony-locks-93-000-psn-and-soe-accounts-due-to-massive-hack-att/

Sony's not having a good morning. In addition to having to recall 1.6 million Bravia TVs, it's also been forced to temporarily lock 93,000 customers out of their PSN and Sony Online Entertainment accounts. You won't be surprised by the reason: an attempt by hackers to "test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords" against Sony's network database. Some of the affected accounts showed "additional activity prior to being locked" and are being investigated. On the flip-side, Sony's Chief Information Security Officer, Philip Reitinger, stressed that most of the hackers' details resulted in failed logins and in any case credit card details are not at risk. Users are being told to expect an email if they've been affected, which will contain further instructions. Has Sony finally realized the value of timely communication?

drag2share: Sprint and Verizon confirm iPhone 4S Micro SIM unlock for international travel (update: Sprint remains locked?)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/12/sprint-and-verizon-confirm-iphone-4s-micro-sim-unlock-for-intern/

If you own an iPhone 4 on AT&T, using the device while traveling internationally means paying sky-high roaming fees, jailbreaking or limiting data use to when you're on a WiFi network, either with a public hotspot or through a service like Xcom Global. Verizon iPhone 4 owners, however, don't have the option of GSM roaming at all, and can only make calls and use cellular data in countries that support CDMA. All that changes with the iPhone 4S, however -- Macworld has confirmed that Sprint will sell its version of the device with the Micro SIM slot unlocked, with Verizon offering free unlocking to customers after the first 60 days of service. iPhone 4S owners will then be able to purchase a Micro SIM overseas, allowing them to access data and make calls at local rates, for a fraction of what it would cost to roam. AT&T iPhone 4S owners won't have this option, however, so if you make frequent trips overseas, this benefit alone may be enough to justify purchasing the phone through Sprint or Verizon, saving some users hundreds or thousands of dollars in international roaming fees.

Update: Our source article was incorrect, and Sprint has told us that its SIM will not be unlocked, adding that the card will not even be removable.

Our SIM does not come out of the device - I believe the same is true of Verizon's iPhone but you would need to confirm that with them. Customers can sign up for one of our international rate plans and use this phone all over the world. When traveling internationally, there is a setting that must be turned on within the device to connect to GSM. The phone will work with a SIM that is provided within the device out of the box. International voice and data charges are on a pay-as-you-go basis and vary based on the country where the customer is using their phone; a list of rates is available at www.sprint.com/international.

Update 2: We heard from Sprint a second time, which redacted part of its previous statement. The carrier further explained "the SIM is removable and is not affixed to the device," which as you may notice directly contradicts the statement made earlier today. We've reached out to Apple twice and are awaiting further clarification.

[Thanks, Julio]

drag2share: LG Doubleplay packs dual screens, likes being different

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/12/lg-doubleplay-packs-dual-screens-likes-being-different/

We double-took when we noticed this strange little handset on T-Mobile's leaked fall roadmap under a 'Flip II' codename, and now it's emerged in some press shots with a doubly playful new moniker and a touch more clarity. We can see a five megapixel rear camera with LED flash, a front-facer of unknown resolution, and what's reported to be a 320x480 HVGA main display. We know very little about the secondary display except that it seems to give you quick access to your apps -- although we're hoping there's more to it than that. The roadmap indicated an imminent November 2nd launch for $150 on contract and it surely won't be long before get some hands-on time. Til then, we'll just try to imagine the ergonomics.
