Toshiba Crammed 5 Computers in Its Shape-Shifting Concept 5-in-1 PC

It's a concept but it's a super fun one. Toshiba's shape-shifting concept 5-in-1 PC somehow manages to be a laptop, a tablet, a convertible tablet, a canvas, and a presentation TV-type device. A few of those five might be redundant (and/or useless), but it's pretty freaking sweet to see one computer try to be everything you want it to be.

drag2share: Look At These Insanely Huge Curved TVs Coming Soon To A Living Room Near You

source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/businessinsider/~3/syJQOG3EPpE/curved-tvs-at-ces-2014-1

Yesterday, we told you that Samsung's big product reveal for 2014 was a bunch of giant, curved TVs as much as 150 inches wide.

But Samsung isn't the only company promoting gigantic bendy screens at CES, the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, this year. Panasonic and Haier both have their own wave-shaped screens coming.

And it's not until you get up close to them that you realize just how curvaceous these new beauties are.

First, here's a look at Samsung's Ultra High Def (UHD) screen. Check out the curve on this thing:

Samsung curved TV

The closer you get to it, the more rounded it becomes. Makes you wonder how it's going to look against your non-curved living room wall:

Samsung curved TV

What the photo above doesn't show is that the picture on the screen stays sharp and "natural" looking even when viewed from the side. There is very little image distortion if you don't get the prime middle seat on the sofa.

Not to be outdone, Panasonic also has a bunch of curved 4K OLED screens that appear to bend in both concave and convex ways:

Epson introduces new Moverio glasses with head-motion tracking and camera

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/06/epson-moverio-bt200/

Everybody knows about those other smart glasses, but they're certainly not the only ones making a big fuss these days. Epson has been working on a similar product called the Moverio BT-100, for the last few years, and it's ready to show off the next iteration of its signature wearable at CES. This one, the BT-200, will retail for the same $700 price point as the original, and comes with Android 4.0 support and a few new features and capabilities: Bluetooth 3.0 support, head-motion tracking aided by sensors and Dolby Digital Plus for surround sound are among the new options. Also, there's a front-facing camera with image and video capture, but bystanders won't need to worry about asking you if you're filming them -- an LED lights up on the lower left corner anytime you're trying to capture precious moments.

But how does it look inside the glasses? Thanks to a pair of tiny transparent displays built into the glasses, you can view movies, play games, do augmented reality and conduct other tasks while walking around, talking to other people or any other normal activity. It comes with an Android device attached that doesn't actually feature a touchscreen; rather, it acts like a mouse of sorts, mimicking your movements on the display and letting you drag the cursor around to wherever you want. It also features wireless mirroring, so other people can watch you fall flat on your virtual face on a HDTV. Sound good to you? Check out our full gallery of images and save up $700 before March.

drag2share: Samsung Has Two New Incredibly Powerful Galaxy Tablets

source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/businessinsider/~3/6zTGqJc0Eag/samsung-galaxy-pro-tablets-2014-1

samsung galaxy notepro

Samsung announced today that it has four new high-end tablets aimed at the enterprise and professional market.

They're called the Galaxy NotePRO and Galaxy TabPRO tablets, and they come in variations with screens as large 12.2 inches.

Let's break it down.

There are several different sizes to choose from, so let's go over what these tablets can do first. In general, all the software features are the same. The only significant difference between the NotePRO and TabPRO is that the NotePRO comes with Samsung's special stylus called the S Pen. The S Pen lets you take notes with handwriting recognition and draw on the tablet's screen.

The PRO tablets are based on the latest version of Android, which is called KitKat, but also include a ton of extra software features and modifications from Samsung.

First, there's the home screen, which has a layout similar to the news-reading app Flipboard. You can program the home screen to show you news, social networking updates, weather, etc. You can customize it to suit you.

Next, there's an app called Remote PC that lets you remotely access your Windows or Mac computer from the tablet. You can even drag and drop files between the devices.

Finally, there's a bunch of other free software and goodies like the a free LinkedIn Premium account, subscription to Bloomberg Businessweek, and extra Dropbox space.

Now for the screen sizes. You'll have a lot to choose from. All the screens have incredibly sharp display's.

  • The Galaxy NotePRO will come with a 12.2-inch screen.
  • The Galaxy TabPRO will have! three screen size options: 12.2 inches, 10.1 inches, and 8.4 inches.

Toshiba Chromebook is the company's first Chrome OS device; arrives next month for $279 (hands-on)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/06/toshiba-chromebook-hands-on/

Toshiba Chromebook is the company's first Chrome OS device; arrives next month for $279 (hands-on)

We already knew Toshiba was coming out with a Chrome OS device, but in the four months since Intel teased it at IDF, we haven't seen anything in the way of specs, much less product shots. That changes today: The company just announced the Toshiba Chromebook here at CES, making this the first time we've seen the device up close. Of note, this has a 13-inch display, which, for whatever reason, has never been used on a Chromebook before. At any rate, Toshiba is betting that consumers coming over from Windows and Mac machines will want the same in-between-sized screen they're already used to -- especially if they plan on spending a lot of time in Gmail and GDocs.

Due to that larger screen, this is naturally going to be a bit heavier than, say, the HP Chromebook 11 (three pounds vs. 2.3), but what you lose in portability, you'll make up for in power. While HP's offering makes do with an ARM processor, the Toshiba Chromebook offers a Haswell-series Celeron 2955U CPU for the same price, promising stronger performance and longer battery life (up to nine hours, say company reps).

Also, that larger footprint means a less-cramped keyboard. Indeed, after just a few minutes of hands-on time, we noticed the buttons were well-spaced, with a good deal of travel. Elsewhere on the gray plastic chassis, you'll find two USB 3.0 connections, a full-sized HDMI socket, a headphone port, an SDXC card reader and a lock slot -- a particularly handy feature for students and teachers. As for that 13.3-inch 1,366 x 768 display, the viewing angles are pretty limited, but then again, what else did you expect from a $279 machine?

For now, Toshiba is only planning on selling a WiFi-only model with 2GB of RAM and the standard 16GB of built-in storage, but a spokesperson told us the company could "potentially" come out with a 4G version, too. For now, that WiFi-only edition is shipping February 16th for $279 -- slightly less than you'd pay for other Haswell Chromebooks.

Sharp Aquos lineup for 2014 bears 1080p and 4K TVs, a revamped SmartCentral platform and the new Quattron+ Series

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/06/sharp-aquos-2014-tv-lineup/

We knew an army of TVs would be making an appearance at CES 2014. Accordingly, Sharp has just announced what we can expect out of the Aquos portfolio this year, with new hardware being introduced as part of its HD, Quattron and 4K Series -- there's also the debut of Quattron+, but we'll talk more about that a little later. As expected, Sharp is placing emphasis on big LED screens: Each model begins at 60 inches, ranging all the way up to 90 inches in the case of the HD Series. Speaking of which, the entry-level Aquos HD will be priced starting at $1,300, offering 1080p at 120Hz, 2D/3D options and Smart TV features. Meanwhile, the Quattron Series, which starts at $1,700, also does 1080p, but at 240Hz, plus it's equipped with Quattron technology and Sharp's completely overhauled SmartCentral platform, something the HD line doesn't have access to.

Those looking to spend a little more will be able to choose from the newly minted Quattron+ or 4K Series, both of which are running the company's revamped Smart TV software, SmartCentral 3. TVs with Quattron+ (seen above) are sort of a step between 1080p and Ultra HD; Sharp describes them as the "highest-resolution full HD" sets available, noting that the technology "divides each pixel, creating two pixels from one, to deliver 16 million subpixels." Prices on these are expected to be from $2,300 to $6,000 -- this gets you things like 3D, THX-approved sound, Bluetooth and, on the higher-end models, an AquoMotion 960, 240Hz screen. Lastly, the 4K Series, which is likely the most interesting of the bunch and ranges from $5,000 to $6,000, gets you an Ultra HD TV with an AquoMotion 240, 120Hz display, THX 4K, 3D, a duo bass subwoofer and four HDMI 2.0 ports. All in all, Sharp is going to be kicking off the year with a total of 19 different Aquos TVs; the HD, Quattron and Quattron+ are expected to ship in the spring, though there's no word yet on when the 4K Series is due to arrive.

drag2share: The iPhone 6 Will Be Impossibly Thin, According To Gossip Out Of Asia

source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/businessinsider/~3/tfox1uXLexM/iphone-6-rumors-2014-1

iphone air concept

The iPhone 5S is barely four months old, but the rumor mill for Apple's next iPhone has already started churning.

According to a report in the Korean publication ET News, the next iPhone will be incredibly thin at just 6 millimeters. The iPhone 5S is currently 7.6 millimeters thick, which is still thinner than many other top-tier smartphones. ET News is calling the next iPhone the iPhone Air, but it's probably a bit too early to start speculating on names right now.

One reason the next iPhone could be so thin is because it's also said to have a larger screen that would allow some more space for internal components. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has an amazing track record predicting Apple gadgets ahead of time, says the new phone will have a nearly 5-inch screen.

Apple is on an annual release schedule with its iPhones, so don't expect a new one until September at the earliest.

drag2share: As Subsidies Fade, People Are Keeping Their Old Phones — And That's A Problem For Apple

source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/businessinsider/~3/Fbua91CxcoQ/apple-faces-a-longer-upgrade-cycle-2014-1

BII_Subsidies_UpgradeCycle

In the mobile industry, growth is tied to the upgrade cycle.

The upgrade cycle is the frequency with which people ditch older phones for newer ones. In the U.S., the smartphone upgrade cycle has steadily gotten longer over the years, and reached 22 months in 2012, according to Recon Analytics.

Why is the upgrade cycle growing longer? Many smartphones are so good now that there's often little reason to upgrade, but also — carriers are cutting back on subsidies and moving away from rigid two-year contracts. Consumers are thinking twice about getting new phones as their upfront costs creep up. That spells trouble for Apple in particular, since the company has relied so heavily on carrier subsidies to get its phones in consumer hands, and its overall business model is so heavily reliant on hardware sales.

In a recent report, BI Intelligence, looks at the increasingly lengthy smartphone upgrade cycle in the U.S. and in other key markets. We discuss how less frequent smartphone upgrades will impact all the major players in the mobile industry, and predict how long the smartphone upgrade cycle will get

3D-Printed Siphon Makes Sharing Drinks Impossibly Easy

Anyone who's ever emptied a pool or stolen gas from a car's tank knows how a siphon works, but that doesn't make this 3D printed Wave toy seem any less magical. Seeing it in action you'd assume there was some kind of sorcery involved here, as one side of the Wave draws liquid to the other until both glasses have the exact same amount of liquid. But it's just well-known scientific principles at work.

Polaroid debuting $1,000 4K TV at CES

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/02/polaroid-tv/

Polaroid's been struggling with a bit of an identity crisis since the halcyon days of instant photography. Did you know, for example, that the company's been putting its name on TVs? Polaroid's celebrating CES with the release of two ambitious (if not particularly memorably named) sets at extremely low price point. The more notable of the two is a 50-inch 4K set with three HDMI inputs, priced at $1,000. Can't quite swing that? Good news, a mere $600 will get you a 50-inch set with a Roku Streaming Stick built-in -- and that one's got HDMI inputs, as well. Both sets will be on-hand in Vegas next week.

Leak shows LG's radical new interface for its webOS Smart TVs

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/02/lg-webos-smart-tv-leak/

LG's rumored webOS Smart TV is tipped to arrive at CES in the coming days, but that hasn't stopped intrepid leaker @evleaks from giving us what could be an early preview of its next connected set. In what appears to be a significant departure from the smartphone-like UI utilized in its current Smart TVs, the leaked render shows off LG's modern interpretation of the Cards interface we first saw in Palm's webOS-powered smartphones and tablets. LG chiefs have already indicated that the company has thrown its weight behind the Enyo open-source JavaScript development framework, which it acquired from HP as part of the webOS project, in the hope it will encourage third parties to create apps and services for its next-gen TVs. If the leaked image is real, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Skype apps will likely be available at launch, but we're set to find out for sure when CES 2014 commences next week.

This camera stabilizer seems to defy the laws of physics

Though it may look fake and unreal and impossible and not allowed on Earth, the camera stabilizer in the video is completely real. You can't make it shake. It's like magic decided to defy physics and ignore gravity. All I want to do is park myself in front of a mirror and do as many twists and turns and spins as possible to see if I can get the camera off track. Like this guy.

LG Lifeband Touch leak suggests fitness wearable could be imminent

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2013/12/31/lg-lifeband-touch-leak/

We love it when a leak and a rumor come together. LG's Lifeband Touch (as claimed by @evleaks), pictured above, is most likely the wearable that was hinted at just last week. The fitness band is likely an evolution of that which we saw back at CES, and at a guess, we might see again in the next week or so (unless we're made to wait until MWC). The name -- and image -- suggest a touchscreen component making this a swipe-friendly FuelBand competitor. Whether it'll be an LG G2 companion (as rumored) or a standalone device is yet to be known (we're hoping maybe a bit of both). Unless LG has had a change of heart, it's also likely to include an altimeter, some mobile notification features and play nice with the firm's Smart TV fitness/dance apps. What certainly is clear, however, is that there's going to be even more competition for your wrist in 2014.

Snapdragon 805's desktop-class mobile graphics chops in action (video)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2013/12/31/qualcomm-snapdragon-805/

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 chip is still pretty dang new, but the company's already churned out a follow-up: the Snapdragon 805, a so-called Ultra HD processor. Like the 800, this version is a Krait-based, quad-core chip, and its biggest selling point is support for 4K video playback on your mobile devices as well as your smart TV. The 805 also includes an Adreno 420 GPU, which Qualcomm says offers 40 percent more graphics power. Of course, this is the sort of tech that you really need to see to believe. Luckily, a recent trip to San Diego gave us a chance to stop by Qualcomm's HQ and check out the latest Snapdragon demos. Head past the break for a look at the chip's graphics and video chops.

All four demos utilized the Snapdragon 805 Development Platform, an Android tablet with a 2,560 x 1,440 display, dual cameras with 3D sensors and surround-sound speakers. While devices packing the 805 chip won't debut until late 2014, these setups tease some of the visual improvements you can expect.

Selective focus and other camera apps

With the 805, Qualcomm is commercializing several software algorithms that allow for advanced photo-editing tools no matter what smartphone you're using (as long as it packs this Snapdragon chip, that is). For example, an app called UbiFocus let us change what parts of an image were in focus à la the Lytro camera. It worked well, and thanks to the 805's processing oomph, there wasn't noticeable delay on-screen. Other programs include Optizoom, which sharpens a particular area (such as text) of a photo, and Chromaflash, which fuses flash and natural-light versions of a photo for an enhanced picture.

Multi-view 3D

One of the coolest demos on hand showed off the 805's Adreno 420 GPU. When hooked up to an external monitor, the Development Platform was capable of streaming eight different feeds of 3D video to the display, allowing for an ideal viewing experience no matter where we stood in front of the setup. Multi-view 3D is one of the Snapdragon 805's most significant advantages -- at least in terms of graphics -- over the 800, which can't pull it off with its Adreno 330 GPU.

Improved graphics efficiency

Qualcomm added hardware tessellation to the Adreno 420 GPU, which makes for a marked improvement over the Adreno 330 in terms of visuals. Essentially, the GPU supports additional geometry (i.e., graphics details) without stressing the CPU's processing power and memory. It's the kind of GPU heavy lifting that's been doable on consoles and high-end PCs previously, but not on a tablet. A comparison between the Adreno 330 and 420's rendering of an insect moving around makes it clear just how much better the latter performs.

High-quality images, small file size

Thanks to hardware 4K HEVC (high efficiency video coding), the Snapdragon 805 can decode and stream high-quality video without using much power. And we really mean high quality; just check out the clip above, which should give you a decent idea about the level of detail you can expect on mobile platforms and TVs alike. The processor also packs improved Dolby Audio, including vertical surround sound, but that experience doesn't transfer as well to a video hands-on.

Samsung's 110-inch Ultra HDTV is the world's largest, and it goes on sale Monday

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2013/12/29/samsung-110-inch-uhd-tv/

Samsung promised at CES in January that it would deliver a 110-inch UHDTV this year to dwarf its already-gargantuan 85-inch model and with just a couple of days left to spare here it is. Apparently rolling out in China, the Middle East and a few European countries first, there's no word on price (the 85-inch had a $40K pricetag attached when it launched), but can you really put a price on a TV that's bigger than a king-size bed? That's right, at 2.6-meters by 1.8-meters there's more than enough room for well-heeled VIPs or employees of large companies and government agencies (the target market for the S9110) to catch some z's on it -- and bring a few friends. It's available for custom orders just before we see the new generation of Ultra HD (including a 105-inch curved model) at CES 2014 next week, although most of us will be looking for TVs that actually fit inside our living room.
