drag2share: Samsung introduces WiFi SmartCam and video baby monitor (update: hands-on!)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/samsung-introduces-wifi-smartcam-and-video-baby-monitors/

For those keen on observing from afar, Samsung's just unveiled two WiFi surveillance cameras. Both can easily be paired with routers that support WPS and offer remote tracking from Sammy's SmartCam website. That video feed is 640 x 480 at 30fps and encoded in H.264. Alternatively on the WiFi SmartCam, footage can automatically be uploaded to YouTube based on predefined activity. And both'll survey in complete darkness thanks to built-in infrared -- up to a few meters at least. Catch either in March when they go on sale for a cool $149. PR, per usual is after the break.

Dana Murph and Daniel Cooper contributed to this post.

drag2share: Here's a seven-minute Nikon D4 sample video: try not to drool

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/nikon-d4-dslr-1080p-amazing-sample-video/

Corey Rich. Might not ring a bell off-hand, but it'll be someone you're insanely jealous of after you head past the break and mash play. Sir Rich was fortunate enough to get hands-on with a Nikon D4 during the company's launch efforts, and he put together an absolutely stunning seven-minute video montage showcasing exactly what the new beast is capable of. We're told that the captures were taken over a grueling 11 day period, with all of the action shots captured directly onto SanDisk Extreme Pro CF cards. The author has posted a reminder that the Vimeo clip is compressed using H.264 at 10,000kbps, and while some have spotted glitching in parts, he assures us the original media was devoid of the stuff. Enough talking -- get to watching.

[Thanks, Wynn]

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/samsungs-intouch-brings-apps-like-skype-and-a-browser-to-your/

If you've tasked Sammy with stalking your progeny and your house, what's another camera ontop of your TV? Samsung's inTouch is just that, running a skinned version of Android 2.3, replete with WiFi and a 3 megapixel camera. The combination of which enables apps like Skype, YouTube, and a web browser to be fed to your boob tube. Controlled by a QWERTY remote, it'll be yours for $199 come March. For those interested, we've embedded PR after the break.

drag2share: Lenovo LePad K2010 (IdeaTab K2) hands-on

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/lenovo-lepad-k2010-ideatab-k2-hands-on/

Remember our lovely leak of Lenovo's Tegra 3 tablet from last November? Well, it showed up here at CES under the LePad K2010 moniker for China, while elsewhere it'll likely be known as the IdeaTab K2. We won't comment much on the unfinished software (so no luck with controlling the cursor using the fingerprint scanner on the back), but build quality wise we enjoyed the faux brushed metal cover on the back, and similarly, the sharp 1,920 x 1,200 IPS display between the speakers was very impressive (yes, we double-checked with Lenovo on these numbers).

We also received confirmation that the camera on the back has an eight-megapixel resolution, but obviously we'll wait and see if the picture quality lives up to expectation. Alas, there's still no word on availability, but regardless, China will get first dibs on this juicy quad-core slate. On the bright side, this should give ample time for potential buyers to save up -- the K2010 is aimed at high-end business users, after all. Hands-on video after the break.

drag2share: Acer's Secret Weapon For 2012: This Tablet Will Melt Your Eyeballs With Full HD Video

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/acer-1080p-hd-quad-core-iconia-tab-2012-1

acer iconia tab 1080p hd model

While most of Acer's focus today was on its new Ultrabooks and cloud service, the company did rush an announcement for a brand new tablet that has a zippy quad-core processor and a display that can show off 1080p HD video.

Impressive.

The new Iconia Tab is due out during the second half of this year and sports the same Tegra 3 processor from NVIDIA that's found in Asus' excellent Eee Pad Transformer Prime.

But the real stat to pay attention to is the tablet's 1900 X 1080 resolution display. This is the first tablet we've seen that can play full 1080p HD video.

The next flagship Iconia Tab (there's no official name for it yet) will also run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Google's latest OS that debuted on the Galaxy Nexus.

Keep in mind this is probably just the first of many tablets coming this year with HD displays. Rumors suggest that Samsung's next Galaxy Tab, which is expected to be unveiled next month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, will also have a killer display. And of course the iPad 3 could finally get the long-rumored Retina Display.

drag2share: An Android-Powered TV? Yup, Lenovo Has It (GOOG)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/lenovo-ideatab-smartphone-smart-tv-2012-1

lenovo k91 tv

Lenovo just unleashed a slew of new Android devices, including a brand new Ice Cream Sandwich-powered Smart TV.

While the phones are still stuck on the year-old version of Android, 2.3 Gingerbread, it's the new IdeaTab tablet and K91 Smart TV that really intrigue us.

The IdeaTab S2 is a 10.1-inch Android Ice Cream Sandwich device that has an optional keyboard dock similar to the one that you can get for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime. Just like the Transformer Prime, the IdeaTab can fold over the keyboard dock, making it more like a laptop/tablet hybrid. When plugged into the laptop dock, Lenovo claims you can get up to 20 hours of battery life out of the IdeaTab.

The K91 Smart TV is a 55-inch HD set that is powered by Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Keep in mind, that's different than Google TV. This is a completely custom skin for Android made by Lenovo. Like any smart TV, you'll get access to apps and streaming video services, but Lenovo doesn't have any specifics yet.

Finally, there's the S2 smartphone. It's powered by a heavily-customized version of Android Gingerbread, and looks very WebOS-ish.

So far, no word on price or availability on Lenovo's new lineup.

drag2share: Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 full details leaked, 720p camera and new flight modes?

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/parrot-ar-drone-2.0-leakedd/

Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 full details leaked, 720p camera and new flight modes?
It was hard to miss the "2.0" branding over at Parrot's little aerodrome here at CES, but with nary a detail we were left speculation what the new major version number means. Now, though, we have some more details. A lot more details, actually. Over at AR Drone Flyers we've spotted what looks to be an official press release detailing everything about the new UAV, most notable being an improved 720p camera. You can apparently use this to record footage from the drone and even program it to fly in any direction automatically. In other words, this could be the low-cost aerial camera DIY extreme sports filmmakers have waited for. And, at $299 when it ships in Q2, it'll be quite close to affordable. You can check out a picture of the new drone above and read the full details in the seemingly official press release below.

[Thanks, Symon Davis]

drag2share: Xi3's TAND3M software enables two users to tap into a single modular PC, microSERV3R en route

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/07/xi3s-tand3m-software-two-users-ces-2012/

Hard to say how many Xi3 "modular computers" have been moved to date, but enabling a single one to serve two masters might just create a new market for it. The outfit's here in Vegas to introduce its new TAND3M software, described as a program that'll enable two people to simultaneously share and use one Xi3 Modular Computer for all computing functions. The outfit's trumpeting the lower overall cost of implementation, and while the app itself will demand $100, that's far cheaper than paying a few hundred bones for an entirely new rig. In order to take advantage, you'll need to have two separate monitors, keyboards and mice, and it'll play nice with Xi3 machines using either Linux or Windows. We're told to expect availability in "the first half of 2012," and in related news, the company's launching new 4x4x4-inch microSERV3R (yeah, it's a full-blown server). We'll be jonesing for a look ourselves as soon as the show floor opens up

drag2share: Intel collaborating with more system-on-chip vendors, bringing Wireless Display to more places

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/07/intel-wireless-display-widi-new-devices/

Intel's Wireless Display hasn't exactly generated AirPlay-level buzz, but there's no question that it's a beautiful feature to end up with on insert-your-next-system-here. In a bid to bring WiDi to even more places (and in turn, generate even more buzz), the company's reaching out to System-On-Chip (SoC) vendors -- including Cavium, Mstar Semiconductor, Sigma Designs, Realtek, and Wondermedia -- in order to slide the feature over to even more connected TVs, set-top boxes and "other home consumer electronic devices." In other words, "you'll soon be able to enjoy streaming your PC to your HDTV with WiDi technology built-in, without the need for an external adapter." Naturally, we'll be looking for proof as soon as the CES show floor opens up.

drag2share: LG home theater system adds vertical speakers for 9.1 surround sound

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/07/lg-home-theater-system-adds-vertical-speakers-for-9-1-surround-s/

While 3D video is already running rampant throughout the latest HDTVs, another new bullet point feature is 3D sound, and naturally LG's newest home theater systems have it. LG will have four new home theater systems on display this week at CES, but the first one it's showing off is the BH9420PW, which uses "3D Sound Zooming" to match the positioning of sounds with 3D video being displayed on one of LG's TVs. It achieves this thanks to four upright speakers added to the traditional 5.1 layout and algorithm that detects depth of effects being watched in 3D. According to LG, this makes for a wider sweet spot than usual, but as always we'll let our ears be the judge. There's a few more details in the press release after the break along with a couple more pictures to tide you over until the press conference kicks off at 11AM ET, January 9th.

drag2share: LG Cinema Screen LCD HDTVs slice bezel to 1mm, let two players share one TV

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/07/lg-cinema-screen-lcd-hdtvs-slice-bezel-to-1mm-let-two-players-s/

LG has been pushing its flavor of 3DTV as Cinema 3D, and now it has slipped the theater related nomenclature onto another feature, the 1mm thin LCD bezels it has dubbed "Cinema Screen". It claims this move brings the experience closer to the theater, but that's not the only new feature for 2012. LG announced it will offer Dual Play, where it uses polarized glasses to let two different players see only their perspective on the full screen at once in games that support it. Vizio demonstrated the feature last year as Versus and Sony brought it to market in the PlayStation 3D display. We'll likely get more time with those razor thin bezels once CES is truly underway, for now check after the break for the press release.

drag2share: Fujifilm X-Pro1 lenses get Amazon product pages, prices

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/fujifilm-x-pro1-lenses-get-amazon-product-pages-prices/

Well, that didn't take long. Just yesterday, Wells Fargo Advisors reportedly outed the Fujifilm X-Pro1, a possible successor to the X100 -- today, Amazon's thrown up a trio of product pages for the shooter's leaked lenses. The product descriptions match the previous rumors to a tee, pricing the 18mm (27mm equivalent) f/2.0 and 35mm (53mm equivalent) f/1.4 lens at $500, and the larger 60mm (90mm equivalent) f/2.4 lens priced at $600. Confirmation? Not exactly, but we'll find out soon enough -- Fuijifilm takes these stage on January 9th.

drag2share: Toshiba's Dishing Out a 55-inch 3DTV with 4x the HD (And No Glasses!) [Televisions]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5873873/toshibas-dishing-out-a-55+inch-with-4x-the-hd-and-zero-glasses

Toshiba's Dishing Out a 55-inch 3DTV with 4x the HD (And No Glasses!)If you have over $10,000 and a hunger for ludicrously high definition TVs, Toshiba's impending 55-inch predator is gunning for your wallet and cranium. 4k resolution is more spec candy than anything, but glasses-free 3D? Yes please.

If you want 3D, you'll have to do with a measly 720p, but 2D content will enjoy the beastly mega-resolution that smashes 1080p by a factor of four. Engadget says it'll arrive the first quarter of this year. So start saving. Let's hope CES has more headwear-eliminating 3D sets (and 4k resolution monsters). [Engadget via The Verge]

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/07/asus-windows-8-tablet-promised/

ASUS
We're still days away from CES but the promises show no signs of slowing down. ASUS is the latest, hosting a Taipei event in which its representatives rattled off a long list of fabulous devices to whet your appetite. First up is a 3G version of the Transformer Prime, presumably boasting some more capable AGPS onboard. We're told the 7-inch Eee Memo Pad will be on display here at CES as well but, most interestingly, that a tablet running Windows 8 on ARM is coming a little further down the road. It's said to be at least similar in design to the Prime but an indicated release of late 2012 sadly leaves us wanting.
