Fring Brings Four-Way Video Chat Gangbang to iPad [Video]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5815851/fring-brings-five+way-video-chat-gangbang-to-ipad

Fring Brings Four-Way Video Chat Gangbang to iPadPopular vidchat client Fring isn't content with the usual one-on-one routine. If you've got three other friends, you can all talk to each other (or over each other) now, through an app orgy of chattering faces.

The new Fring doesn't just put a foursome on your screen, but is free, works over cell data as well as WiFi connections, and will let Fring users on other, non-iPad devices tune in. This sounds chaotic, and looks extremely fun. The possibilities here are myriad: group therapy, international shouting matches, letting your pals democratically choose your outfit. Or just staring at each other, creepily, silently, over the internet. [iTunes]

HTC EVO 3D landing in Europe next month, two-stage shutter button and all

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/27/htc-evo-3d-landing-in-europe-next-month-two-stage-shutt/

Up till now, the ranks of 3D-capable smartphones were neatly organized by territory: Japan had the Sharp Aquos SH-12C, the US had the HTC EVO 3D, and Europe had the LG Optimus 3D. Now it's all getting a tiny bit messier (and more competitive!) with HTC's announcement that the EVO 3D has boarded a transatlantic liner and is en route to the green shores of Europa. Available "broadly" across the old continent, this Android 2.3 handset touts a 4.3-inch display with qHD (540 x 960) resolution and an added parallax barrier layer that allows it to deliver a glasses-free 3D effect. We call it an effect because real 3D it ain't, but at least it'll allow you to review the three-dimensional pics you snap with the included pair of 5 megapixel autofocus cameras. There's also a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon purring within for the performance obsessives and a generous 1730mAh battery -- perhaps the biggest advantage that we can see for this phone over the similarly specced (but 3D-less) Sensation. Jump past the break for the full spec sheet and PR or hit up our review to learn just how awesome the EVO 3D's shutter button really is.

Super Talent USB 3.0 Express RC8 looks like a thumb drive, acts like an SSD

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/27/super-talent-usb-3-0-express-rc8-looks-like-a-thumb-drive-acts/

It seems too much to hope for, but Super Talent insists it has the benchmarks to prove it: a USB 3.0 stick that achieves 270MB/s reads and 240MB/s writes under optimal conditions. Unlike your average joe flash drive, the RC8 boasts a fully-fledged (albeit previous-generation) SandForce SSD controller that permits the simultaneous use of eight channels of NAND memory. In other words, this zippy little thing actually is an SSD, enclosed in an aluminum case that measures 1-inch wide, 4-inches long and 0.3-inches thick. No definitive word on pricing yet, but it was reported at Computex that a 50GB variant would go for around $110, while 25GB and 100GB capacities will also be available. Now, could someone please hurry up and build a Thunderbolt version?

Slim ASUS Eee PC X101 to hit shelves next month

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/27/slim-asus-eee-pc-x101-to-hit-shelves-next-month/

ASUS Eee PC X101
That super thin Eee PC X101 that we manhandled back at Computex is just about ready to make its retail debut. Starting in July you'll be able to pick up one of these MeeGo-running crimson clamshells for $199 or, if you're a fan of desktop apps, Windows 7 versions (X101H) starting at $310. Inside the base model you'll find a 1.33GHz, single-core Atom N435, a six-cell battery, and a small SSD (probably of the 16GB variety). Unfortunately, the two most important details -- can it cut a cake and will it blend -- remain unanswered.

CSI Virtual MasterCard app bringing mobile payments to iOS, Android and BlackBerry

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/27/exclusive-csi-virtual-mastercard-app-bringing-more-mobile-payme/

Shortly after MasterCard announced plans to become entangled with Google Wallet (and a few months after those ambitious Isis plans were shelved), it looks as if the aforesaid company is diving into yet another mobile payment arena. And this time, it's personal. MasterCard and CSI Enterprises already offer a smattering of customized business cards for those with highly specific needs, and soon that partnership will extend to iOS, Android and BlackBerry OS. We've confirmed that the CSI Virtual MasterCard app is currently scheduled to launch in July, presumably enabling folks with a GlobalVCard to use their mobile device of choice to make payments. What's interesting here is the inclusion of RIM and iOS; there's no BlackBerry device (nor iOS device) on the market today with NFC, which leads us to believe one of two things: that's either changing by July, or this here service won't rely on NFC at all. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted -- nothing like another way to more easily indebt yourself.

Source: http://lifehacker.com/5815464/join-a-coffee-csa-for-fresh-beans-on-your-doorstep-every-month

Join a Coffee CSA for Fresh Beans on Your Doorstep Every Month There's more to coffee than pre-ground grocery store blends, and if you're ready to explore it, consider joining a Coffee CSA (Community Supported Agriculture.) The CoffeeCSA project connects coffee lovers around the globe with small-batch farmers who ship monthly batches of beans directly to them.

Buyers can also select specific farmers to support or types of coffee to buy through the program. If you like your coffee traceable, shade-grown, certified organic, and fair trade, CoffeeCSA can meet those needs. If you just want fresh coffee mailed to your door from farmers who grow it for a living, the service works just as well. Photo by Stirling Noyes.

Tony Blair Gets Hacked, Address Book Published [Hackers]

Source: http://gawker.com/5815492/tony-blair-gets-hacked-address-book-published

Tony Blair Gets Hacked, Address Book PublishedFormer British Prime Minister Tony Blair's address book—including the names, phone numbers, and addresses of members of government, plus Blair's own National Insurance Number—was apparently leaked to the public by a group of hackers on Friday.

The group, Team Poison, claims to have accessed the Blair office's webmail server "via a private exploit" in December of last year. (Though the group said seperately that they've had the information "for 1 year now.") In the document, which was put up on Pastebin around 6:30 p.m. ET on Friday, the hackers claim that they "still have access to the webmail server, [sic] phone numbers may have changed but all the information is legit."

According to the Team Poison Twitter (manned by a hacker called "Trick"), the motive seems to be political—Blair is described as a "war criminal," and Trick seems to imply that those whose information is being released "supported the war in iraq." (How Team Poison knows that Blair's dentist, whose address and phone number appear in the file, was pro-war, is unclear.)

Two days ago, members of Team Poison gave an interview to FoxNews.com, presenting themselves as rivals to Lulz Security, the group that hacked websites related to Sony, the FBI, the CIA and the U.S. Senate, and whom Team Poison derides (in the interview) as "nothing but a bunch of script kiddies."

New phase-changing alloy turns waste heat into green energy, exhibits spontaneous magnetism (video)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/25/new-phase-changing-alloy-turns-waste-heat-into-green-energy-exh/

New phase-changing alloy turns waste heat into green energy, exhibits spontaneous magnetism (video)Looks like harvesting waste heat is all the rage in 2011. Yet another team of researchers -- this time at the University of Minnesota -- has found a way to harness energy from our hot castoffs. The group has apparently created a brand spanking new alloy that spontaneously creates energy when its temperature is raised by a small amount. Future uses for the material, known as Ni45Co5Mn40Sn10, include charging a hybrid car's battery with the help of waste heat from its exhaust. So what's the trick? Well, this wonder material is a phase changer, meaning it can go from non-magnetic to magnetic in moments, when the temperature rises. When that happens, the alloy absorbs heat, and bam! You've got electricity. The team is also collaborating with chemical engineers to create a thin film version of the material that could be used to convert waste heat from computers. If phase changing gets you all hot and bothered, check out a video demonstration of the alloy's sudden magnetism after the break.

Cowon C2 portable media player review

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/26/cowon-c2-portable-media-player-review/

And here you were assuming the tried-and-true PMP was dead. Au contraire. Cowon's not giving up on its dream quite yet, but after the D2 hung around at the company's low-end for the better part of four years, it's an alphabetic step backwards that's taking over as the successor. The diminutive C2 is about as simple as a PMP gets -- design wise, anyway -- but it's actually capable of supporting both music and video on its 2.6-inch resistive touchpanel. And then there's the purported 55 hours of battery life, included microSD card for expansion and the company's world-class audio quality. Still, $135 goes a long (long!) way in the portable music industry these days -- does the C2 pack enough punch to make your short list? Head on past the break to find out.

Nokia's N950 splayed by FCC, 12-megapixel camera lurking within

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/26/nokias-n950-splayed-by-fcc-12-megapixel-camera-lurking-within/

Our friends over at the FCC have somehow both scored and already torn asunder Nokia's new flagship MeeGo development phone. Slicing and dicing Espoo's latest confirms the watered-down N9 specs we'd previously heard about, except for one: a 12-megapixel camera. An intriguing addition, as the N950's official specs list an 8-megapixel shooter, which the Finnish firm touted as "different" than the unit in its brother. Perhaps different means the additional 4-megapixels we spotted earlier this year? Sure, last minute component changes aren't unheard of, but if you ever manage to convince the Finns to throw one your way, do us a favor and let us know what it's packing. Ok?

Duke University physicists test first air-based acoustic invisibility cloak

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/25/duke-university-physicists-test-first-acoustic-invisibility-cloa/

Firmly departing from the Stuff Of Dreams category, Duke University physicists have successfully tested an acoustic cloaking device that fools sound waves while looking nowhere near as scifi as you'd think. Layering nothing more than a bunch of hole-punched plastic sheets -- known as meta-materials, for those curious -- atop a ten centimeter long block of wood, highly-directed sound in the 1 - 4kHz range bounced right back into the ether none the wiser. The cloaking tech owes some of its origin to the math behind transformation optics -- and maybe to the Duke team, too. Besides allowing defense department bunkers to erupt into silent applause, the research should prove useful in the construction of future concert halls. DIY hobbyists, let us know what you can rig up with some trash bags.

[Thanks, Drew]

AMP camera records 1080p HDR video, you probably can't have one

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/25/amp-camera-records-1080p-hdr-video-you-probably-cant-have-one/

We've already seen cameras that let you pretend you live in a radioactive apocalypse shoot HDR video, combining overexposed and underexposed images into one surreal composite. But so far, that kind of dystopian trippiness has been relegated to experiments and rigs using two lenses. But here we have AMP, a portable-enough five-pound camera that splits the light into three sensors, giving it a range of 17.5 stops to "reveal reality" in our drab, incomplete lives. The single-lens camera shoots 1080p video at 24fps or 30fps, records raw, uncompressed data to an SSD, and works with Nikon F-Mount-compatible lenses. To give you some perspective on the amount of sheer storage required, AMP promises a 256GB SSD can hold 30-plus minutes of footage, with 24fps video consuming less space than the 30 fps variety. It'll be available later this summer for some unknown sum, but not as a mass-produced product. Rather, it'll end up in the hands of a select few prosumers who add themselves to a waiting list. Assuming you won't be one of the chosen, you can get your fill of reality in a pair of demo videos after the break.

Solar Sinter solar-powered 3D printer turns sand into glass, renews our faith in higher education (video)
Where would we be without the world's graduate art projects? In the case of Markus Kayser's Solar Sinter, we might never have seen the day when a solar-powered 3D printer would turn Saharan sand into a perfectly suitable glass bowl. Well, lucky for us (we suppose) we live in a world overflowing with MA students, and awash in their often confusing, sometimes inspiring projects. Solar Sinter, now on display at the Royal College of Art, falls into the latter category, taking the Earth's natural elements, and turning them into functioning pieces of a burgeoning technology. Solar Sinter uses the sun's rays in place of a laser and sand in place of resin, in a process that is perhaps more visually stunning than the results. See for yourself in the video after the break.

OnLive Viewer hits HTC Flyer, ripped and posted for other Android gaming voyeurs (video)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/26/onlive-viewer-hits-htc-flyer-ripped-and-posted-for-other-androi/

OnLive Viewer Droid X
Those of you toting around an HTC Flyer probably just got an update that loaded OnLive Viewer on your 7-inch tablet. Don't get too excited though, the name of the app says it all -- this is a viewer not a player. So, if you've got a voyeuristic streak, you can watch others shoot their way through F.E.A.R. 3, but you won't slowing down time yourself. If that sounds like a blast but you don't have a Flyer, fear not, the folks at the XDA forums were kind enough to rip the APK and post it for all the world to enjoy. We successfully tested it on a Droid X, and reports are that it's up and running on the EVO 4G, Desire HD, and even a hacked Nook Color. Once installed you'll just need a WiFi connection (the app kicks you back to the homescreen on 3G) and low expectations -- the video quality was less than impressive. Hit up the source link to download it for yourself, and check out the video our tipster sent us after the break.

[Thanks, Phil]
