Casio's new 1,000fps compact shooter, the EX-FH100, gets slow-mo review

Casio's new 1,000fps compact shooter, the EX-FH100, gets slow-mo review
When we took a look at last summer's hottest compact cameras, we had a lot of fun playing with the 1,000fps video capture mode on Casio's EX-FC100. That model is sadly no longer with us, but its successor is here to fill the void. While we dig the sophisticated new look for the EX-FH100, Photography Blog finds that the camera still needs work on the inside. On paper, a 10x zoom in front of a 10 megapixel, backside-illuminated sensor sounds like a great combination, but image quality was found to be poor and ISO settings anywhere above 200 resulted in considerable grain. Still, 40fps still shooting is nothing to scoff at, and a $50 price drop compared to last year's model is progress you can take to the bank.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/office-mobile-2010-released-free-upgrade-for-winmo-6-5-users/

After having gone to public beta late last year, Office Mobile 2010 is now available in conjunction with the retail release of the full desktop version of Office 2010, bringing comprehensive Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editing capabilities to the pocket -- on Windows Mobile 6.5, that is. Yes, granted, Windows Phone 7 is Microsoft's biggest mobile news this year, but there'll be a huge legacy base of 6.5 users out there for a long time to come, and they're pretty much the core audience for the sorts of features that Office Mobile 2010 is offering: SharePoint integration for grabbing documents from the office, a nifty Bluetooth controller mode for PowerPoint presentations, and so on... you know, suit-and-tie stuff. The download is available today from Windows Marketplace for users of 6.5 devices with an older version of Office Mobile installed -- so go on, Tiger, whip up the hottest quarterly reports the world has ever seen. We know you have it in you. Follow the break for Redmond's full Office 2010 press release.

OWC debuts uber-capacious 480GB 2.5-inch Mercury Extreme Pro SSD

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/owc-debuts-uber-capacious-480gb-2-5-inch-mercury-extreme-pro-ssd/

Mmm, now we're talking. For years now, 2.5-inch SSDs have largely been too tiny (in terms of storage space) and too pricey to take seriously -- at least, for everyone except those willing to pay substantially more to ride the cutting edge. But Other World Computing just threw a monkey wrench into the norm, dishing out an incredibly roomy 480GB Mercury Extreme Pro solid state drive meant to supplant your aging laptop HDD. It's one of four in the range (60GB, 120GB and 240GB models are also available), all of which are pegged to deliver up to 285MB/sec sustained data rates with "no speed degradation." All four sizes are up for pre-order now for both PC and Mac platforms, with prices set at $219.99 (60GB), $379.99 (120GB), $699.99 (240GB) and $1,579.99 (480GB). What, you expected 480 gigabytes of sweet, succulent flash memory to come cheap? Puh-lease.

Steam arrives for the Mac with 57 games in tow, all your PC using friends are really happy for you

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/steam-arrives-for-the-mac-with-57-games-in-tow-all-your-pc-usin/

Thanks to Valve, Mac users can finally claim to own a "gaming rig" without resorting to Boot Camp or causing PC gamers to burst into laughter. Sure, you're still going to be better off cost-for-pixel-crunching with a mid-range PC desktop than anything Apple offers, but for a MacBook Pro user looking to get in a few frags during lunch, the arrival of Steam for Mac is probably the best news they've heard this year -- and luckily that Source engine isn't too hard on older hardware. Mostly the same crop of games that were available to beta testers are available in the final product, with Portal and Team Fortress 2 standing atop the heap (Portal's even free for a limited time!), while Half-Life and Left 4 Dead remain notably absent. Check out Joystiq if you want a full breakdown of the games, including a few of the highlights, we have... um, some stuff to do. You know, boring work stuff. You probably wouldn't be interested. Hit that source link for the download.

Update: We're not seeing Team Fortress 2, and we're not getting an option for picking up the Mac version of Civ IV, even though it's a "Steam Play" title. The free Portal download isn't working either, but at least we're relatively certain that it will at some point.

Netflix stealth launches HD streaming to PC and Mac

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/netflix-stealth-launches-hd-streaming-to-pc-and-mac/

It appears HD Netflix Watch Instantly streams aren't just for living room set-top boxes anymore now that Netflix is streaming more than half of its 720p-encoded titles to Macs and PCs (through the Silverlight web player, no word on the Media Center add-on.) According to Hacking Netflix, you can tell which ones are ready to go by checking the mouseover box for the (HD Available) tag as seen above. Our experience matches several other reports that not everyone is seeing the tag on all the same titles, so until it's rolled out fully, YMMV. It's not the new release flicks or surround sound add-ons that many are waiting for, but it could slide PQ up another notch for HTPC owners and everyone who just has to watch Killer Klowns from Outer Space at work -- but you'd never do that.

[Thanks, @DaveZatz]

MusicLites shoves a speaker, wireless transmitter and LED light into single canister

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/musiclites-shoves-a-speaker-wireless-transmitter-and-led-light/

Look, we've no beef with Osram Sylvania (nor Artison, for that matter), but calling these MusicLites "a first of its kind" is a bit of a stretch, if not an outright falsity. Klipsch launched essentially the same thing back at CES this year with the LightSpeaker, but hey, we've no gripes with a little competition in the space. The aforementioned duo has joined up in order to produce something that should make the art of integrating whole home audio into your own abode a good bit easier, with the MusicLites design combining a 10-watt LED light, a 70mm full-range loudspeaker and a wireless audio receiver. The device can slide into four-, five- or six-inch recessed cans, and we're told that it'll provide light output equivalent to a 65-watt reflector bulb. As you'd probably expect, there's a proprietary 2.4GHz transceiver that works with a variety of sources, some of which include USB, smartphones and PMPs. Each kit will ship with a pair of 3.8" x 5.3" modules and a remote that controls light dimming and audio settings, and while mum's the word on pricing, it'll be commercially available sometime in the fall.

MSI's Slatebook 10-inch Atom tablet is not what we've been waiting for

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/msis-slatebook-10-inch-atom-tablet-is-not-what-weve-been-waiti/

DigiTimes has it that MSI will be showcasing a 10-inch Windows 7 "Slatebook" tablet at Computex in June -- just as we had heard a few weeks ago. According to its sources which tend to be pretty solid at Taiwanese shops, the sub-$500 tablet will feature an e-book reader with a negotiated content provider, 3G and WiFi wireless, and Windows 7 running on Intel's old Menlow-class of Atom Zxx processors. It's not running Android on Tegra 2 like the unit above that we handled at CES six months prior, MSI is apparently still evaluating market demand before making any such commitment. So dear readers, why not let MSI know exactly how you feel about its design choices in the comments below.

Kaleidescape outs M300 and M500 Blu-ray players, copiers

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/kaleidescape-outs-m300-and-m500-blu-ray-players-copiers/

Kaleidescape's just announced another line of high end home entertainment products -- this time it's the M300 and M500 Blu-ray players. The M500 also boasts Blu-ray copying abilities, too -- allowing you to import Blu-rays, DVDs and CDs onto your server at home. In an interesting decision, Kaleidescape will require that the physical disc be present for playback from the server -- which, you may be thinking, rather defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Pretty much. Thankfully, Kaleidescape's got a disc loader in the works which will allow you to keep a "large number" of discs ready in the system for faster loading. The loader itself isn't expected to be ready for retail until the first half of next year, but you can grab the M300 and the M500 beginning May 18th, with the M300 running $2,495 and the M500 at $3,995. The full press release follows.

Samsung unveils 23-inch U250 and 20-inch U200 multitouch all-in-one PCs

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/samsung-unveils-23-inch-u250-and-20-inch-u200-multitouch-all-in/

Eager for more of Samsung's outlay? Good. Officially unveiled today over in the UK, the company's new 23-inch U250 and 20-inch U200 all-in-one PCs are going where loads of AIO machines already have: the multitouch galaxy. The former offers up a full 1080p resolution, while the latter steps down to 1,600 x 900; both of 'em ship with Windows 7 Home Premium, and the company would have you know that these two mark its "first venture into the home PC market in the UK." Regrettably, the excitement was tempered by the lack of a real specification sheet, but we're told they'll ship later this month for those who couldn't care less about nuts, bolts, gigahertz and megabytes.

Samsung announces P580 business notebook with Core i3 / i5 and matte screen

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/samsung-launches-p580-business-notebook-with-core-i3-i5-and-no/

Laptops with anti-glare screens are hard to come by these days, so it's nice to see Samsung adding a new option for us all. What you're looking at here is the P580 notebook, sporting a 15.6-inch 1,366 x 768 LED-lit screen and keyboard with numeric keypad. Underneath the hood you'll find a Core i3 or i5 CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (1GB GDDR3) graphics, Trusted Platform Module security, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and 2GB to 4GB of RAM. If you feel that the four chargeable USB 2.0 jacks (one of which is also eSATA) aren't adequate, then there's always the docking port that offers plenty more for your socket fetish. Not bad for a 2.5kg (5.51 pounds) package, and let's hope this workhorse trots in before long with appropriately alluring pricing. Full PR after the break.

Samsung goes display crazy: H03 pico projector, SyncMaster PX2370 LCD and more

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/samsung-goes-display-crazy-h03-pico-projector-syncmaster-px237/

Well, what do you know? Seems Samsung set up shop in the heart of London and threw itself a product introduction party! In case the company's new laptop and desktop options didn't tickle your fancy, Sammy's giving you a host of new display options as well. Kicking things off is the June-bound H03, which the company incorrectly claims is the "world's brightest pico projector" with just 30 ANSI lumens -- too bad we've seen units with far more already. Moving on, there's the new SyncMaster PX2370 LED-backlit LCD monitor, offering up a 16:9 aspect ratio, a Touch of Color design, 2ms response time, VGA / DVI / HDMI inputs and a 1080p native resolution. Bringing up the rear is the 1,000 ANSI lumen LED-based SP-F10M projector and the SyncMaster MD230, the latter of which we saw toying with ATI's Eyefinity solution back at CES. Sadly, no concrete pricing details were made public, but you can peruse the respective press releases just beyond the break.

Scanning New York City With Lasers From 3,500 Feet [Lasers]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5535600/scanning-new-york-city-with-lasers-from-3500-feet

Scanning New York City With Lasers From 3,500 FeetLast week, in the early hours of the morning, a crew methodically swept over New York City in a laser-equipped Shrike Commander aircraft. They were busy creating the most accurate, detailed 3D map of the city to date.

The plane scanned the city—its buildings and streets, parks and early-morning pedestrians—with Lidar technology (presumably no traffic tickets were written.) The map, which will cost the city some $450,000 to make, will be used to pinpoint areas prone to flooding and to determine if the city's rooftops are suitable for the installation of solar panels.

The New York Times mentions that city officials are considering it a 21st Century upgrade of The Panorama, the massive architectural model of the city that Robert Moses created in 1964.

Canon IXUS 300 HS Handles Low-Light and High-Speed Shooting Well [Canon]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5535904/canon-ixus-300-hs-handles-low+light-and-high+speed-shooting-well

Canon IXUS 300 HS Handles Low-Light and High-Speed Shooting WellI'm very fond of Canon's IXUS line of compacts, and definitely want to check out this 300 HS at some point, as it's the first in the range with manual controls and their new HS system which handles low-light better.

It's a 10MP model with f/2.0 28mm 3.8x Canon lens, and can shoot HD video in 720p resolution. The new HS system not only handles low-light conditions better, but also does greater high-speed shooting—so expect to see the HS name rolled out onto more Canon models at some point.

ISO range goes up to 3200 at full resolution, but in low-light mode you can whip it up a notch to 6400 (if you're willing to downgrade resolution to 2.5MP, that is). Optical zoom is just 3.8x which is really the only area I can see being improved upon, as the £379 ($560 with a direct conversion; we're still waiting on US pricing) price-point makes it quite a bit more than Panasonic's TZ7, which has a 12x optical zoom.

Hardware-wise, it's made from stainless steel and has a 3-inch LCD screen. More info below on the 300 HS, which is out this month.

Canon IXUS 300 HS Handles Low-Light and High-Speed Shooting Well

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 11th May 2010 – Canon today bolsters its luxury IXUS range with the launch of the incredible new IXUS 300 HS – a stylish and powerful premium compact digital camera capable of capturing outstanding stills and High Definition (HD) video. Available in blasted steel silver, matt black, glossy white or high gloss red, the new model offers a supercharged combination of speed, usability and creative control – making it perfect for those who wish to make a statement with the technology they own.

The IXUS 300 HS is the first model to feature Canon's new HS System, combining a high-sensitivity 10.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor with fast DIGIC 4 processing for enhanced low light performance and high-speed shooting. A bright, f/2.0 wide-angle lens provides the ability to use faster shutter speeds and make subjects stand out by creatively blurring the background, while a range of manual settings offer a new level of artistic flexibility to IXUS users who wish to explore, and develop, their photographic skills.

Fast, powerful, versatile

The IXUS 300 HS embodies the latest in luxurious, high-performance, pocketable imaging technology from Canon. The new HS System provides excellent performance in low light, making the most of the camera's back-illuminated CMOS imaging sensor and DIGIC 4 processor, supporting a maximum ISO of 3200 at full resolution and reducing noise levels at all ISO speeds[i]. Using Low Light mode, the camera can also achieve an extended maximum speed of ISO 6400, capturing images at 2.5MP resolution and providing the ideal tools for shooting at evening events and on nights out.

The camera's low light performance is further enhanced by a bright, f/2.0, 28mm wide-angle lens with 3.8x optical zoom, helping users to get closer to the action while allowing more light to reach the sensor. Canon's acclaimed optical Image Stabilizer (IS) minimises the blur associated with longer exposures when shooting in low light and when zooming in to get closer to subjects. Using advanced lens-shift technology, the IS allows users to shoot sharp images even with up to 1/8th of the light that would normally be required from cameras without stabilisation – equivalent to a 3-stop advantage.

The lens' wide maximum aperture and its manually-controlled iris also provide users with greater control over depth of field, enabling the capture of impressive portraits and striking macro shots. This level of optical performance has been achieved using the same processes and quality standards used to manufacture Canon's series of EF professional lenses, which are used and trusted by millions of users the world over.

The HS System also enables the CMOS sensor to capture high-speed action with up to 3.7 shots per second continuous shooting at full 10.0MP resolution, or up to 8.4 shots per second at 2.5MP resolution using the High Speed Burst mode. Both high-speed shooting modes have no limit on the number of shots taken and can be used non-stop right up to card capacity, ensuring that no critical moment will ever be missed[ii]. Extreme, fast-paced action can also be recorded using Super Slow Motion Movie mode, which captures at 240 frames per second (fps) and plays back at a much slower 30fps, providing a dramatic and spectacular record of fast-moving subjects.

Unique Canon design – both inside and out

The IXUS 300 HS stands out from the crowd with an angular and compact stainless steel body, providing sleek looks to match the stunning image quality.

A 7.5 cm (3.0") PureColor II G LCD screen incorporates a strong tempered glass outer layer, providing high contrast and wide-angle viewing that makes it ideal for shooting large groups or subjects from awkward angles. Its wide, 16:9 aspect ratio also allows users to frame and play back HD video footage in full screen without black borders at the top and bottom of the picture.

A touch-sensitive scroll wheel makes navigating menus and browsing through images quick, easy and fun. On-screen "Hints & Tips" are also featured within the user interface, coaching users through the different camera settings and offering helpful guidance on the camera's extensive range of features.

Make your mark with creative shooting

The IXUS 300 HS enables even the most inexperienced photographers to explore their creative side, offering a range of modes and functions that make it easy to capture striking images. Smart Auto with Scene Detection Technology provides the best results in all conditions, intelligently detecting the scene and selecting the optimum settings from 22 variables. Smart Flash Exposure also controls flash levels according to shooting conditions, providing the right amount of flash to ensure perfectly exposed shots in all situations.

A range of new and creative shooting modes make taking exciting shots both easy and fun. Fish-eye Effect mimics the distortion of a fish-eye lens, with three effect levels to choose from, whilst Miniature Effect makes subjects appear like miniature-scale models. Easy self-portraits are provided by Smart Shutter, which uses
Face Detection Technology to allow users to trigger the shutter using a smile or a wink of the eye. Using FaceSelf-Timer, users can also set the camera to shoot automatically after detecting a new face in the frame. For more advanced users requiring additional levels of creative control, the IXUS 300 HS offers manual control over shutter speed or aperture settings in Tv and Av modes respectively.

HD video capture – added flexibility in one stylish package

For moments that lend themselves to video, the IXUS 300 HS offers 720p high definition movie recording with high quality stereo sound. The lens' quiet drive system allows users to zoom during recording with minimum audio interference, while the optical Image Stabilizer can also be engaged to reduce the effects of camera shake in video footage. An integrated HDMI-mini port makes it straightforward to share images, allowing pictures and video to be viewed directly on any HDMI-compatible screen, including HDTVs.

For users who want to transfer content wirelessly, the IXUS 300 HS includes Eye-Fi connected functions. The camera features a dedicated Eye-Fi section in the User Interface, on-screen icons, and will disable the automatic power-down function when the Eye-Fi card transmits data – allowing users to transfer content easily and without interruption.[iii]

CANON iMAGE GATEWAY – share your stories
Owners of the IXUS 300 HS can join the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, an online facility for sharing photos and video. Users can take advantage of up to 2GB of personal storage capacity, creating enough room for hundreds of high-quality images. Mobile browsing is also supported, making it easy for friends and family to view photos on the move.
IXUS 300 HS key features:

· High performance IXUS in a stunning stainless steel body

· 10.0 Megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS

· Bright f/2.0, 28mm, 3.8x genuine Canon lens with optical Image Stabilizer

· HS System with DIGIC 4 for fast shooting and low noise in low light

Sony's NEX3 / 5 cameras priced, June release date leaked (update: official)

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sonys-nex3-5-cameras-priced-june-release-date-leaked/

It looks like Sony's having a field day right now in Japan, making its official reveal of the NEX3 and NEX5 cameras, the "ultra-compact" DSLRs with interchangeable lenses we saw back at PMA. The presentation is going on as we speak, and the rumor sites seem to suggest Digital Photography School posted (and subsequently pulled) a review of the NEX3. Quesabesde, however, still has its preview of the not-quite-Micro Four Thirds shooters live, and is also listing some specs and prices. First with the technical details: the NEX3 has a 14.2 megapixel sensor, support for Memory Stick and SDXC media, 720p / 30fps video, and an articulating 2.95-inch LCD. The NEX5 boasts AVCHD 1080i video, and we're not sure yet as to other differences between the pair. As for pricing, the bodies on their lonesome appear to be worth about €250 and €350, respectively -- that's $320 and $448 in US currency. Throw in a 16mm f2.8 lens for €250 and you're now looking at a minimum of €500 (or $640) to join the fray. The kits are said to be going on sale in June. Sony's official site hasn't updated yet, but with any luck we'll get the legit scoop in very short time.

Update: Sony made it official, says a firmware update will be released this summer to capture stereoscopic 3D sweep panoramas.
