If you don't have a home theater PC or a networked console, Netgear's Digital Entertainer EVA2000 can put all those torrents—along with some Hulu action—onto your TV.

Connecting to your TV via HDMI/composite and your router via ethernet, the Digital Entertainer can stream a boatload codecs from your PC or networked storage, load media from a USB stick or stream YouTube from the web.

The catch, however, is that you'll need to purchase PlayOn ($40) if you'd like to stream the premium internet video services like Hulu, Netflix and CBS from a computer.

In other words, the Digital Entertainer's $150 price jumps to almost $200. And for $200, you're in console territory with the PS3 and Xbox 360 supporting UPnP, popular codecs like DivX and PlayOn services. Plus, the 360 obviously supports Netflix out of the box.

I'm not saying there's no point to one of these media streamers, but for $150 when they're not a turnkey solution to everything you want to do anyway, it's probably smart to shop around a bit. [Netgear]

The Digital Entertainer Live - Product Features

Today Epson announced four new 1080p projectors at CEDIA, including the PowerLite Home Cinema 8100 that comes in at an "affordable" $1599.

The 3LCD-based 8100 features a contrast ratio of 36,000:1 and a brightness bump to 1800 lumens. It also includes a Dynamic Iris system that allows for frame by frame light control (up to 60 frames per second)—helping to smooth out movies with fast scene changes. Of course, the $1599 price tag doesn't quite compare to the new crop of sub-$1000 1080p projectors that are starting to hit the market, but Epson's 8100 does represent a second tier of affordability with specs that would probably have cost you at least twice as much a year ago. Of course the game is about more than just impressive contrast ratios, but even without a review these shrinking price points are encouraging. Expect the 8100 to arrive sometime in late October along with a $100 rebate offer that would bring the price down to $1499.

The Esprimo Q1500, which might remind you of a Mac Mini, is back with with the mischievous intent to show off the wares that Apple won't let you have. Though we suspected the Intel CPU inside would be a CULV variant, it turns out to be no less than a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo T9600 -- and it got a good workout by the awesome Engadget Spanish crew, who ran a 720p video in Windows Media Player alongside a Blu-ray movie without any hiccups. The good news extends to the machine itself, which remained quiet in operation and cool to the touch a full 10 minutes into its mini torture test. If we said prices for the top config might be a little cheaper than expected, would you finally be excited? Video after the break.

We already snuck a peak at the European version of Epson's Home Cinema 8500 UB (the EH-TW4400) and Pro Cinema 9500 UB (EH-TW5500) at the big IFA show in Berlin. Now they're US official, and joined by newly anointed PowerLite Home Cinema 8100 and Pro Cinema 9100 models. The new 8100 doubles the reported contrast of the old 6100 (on paper anyway) which should equate to a visible black level improvement for an asking price of just $1,500 after $100 rebate -- very reasonable for a Full HD home theater projector of Epson quality. The 9100 adds support for an anamorphic lens, ISF certification for professional setups, a bundled ceiling mount and spare E-TORL lamp, and a 3-year replacement warranty for a beefier $2,600. Expect the 8100 to hit US retail in October along side the "sub-$4,000" Pro Cinema 9500 UB while the 9100 lands in November with the "sub-$3,000" Home Cinema 8500 UB. Your holiday slide-shows will never be the same.

Now open your eyes, breathe in the fresh air of modernity, and gaze upon ASUS's new line of 16.5mm deep monitors with the admiration they deserve. Coming out with no less than five models ranging from 23.6 to 20 inches -- MS246, MS236, MS226, MS227 and MS202 -- ASUS has strapped touch-sensitive buttons to 2ms response panels with 250 nits of brightness, and a 50,000:1 dynamic (boo!) contrast ratio. The top three models feature Full HD resolution and HDMI, while the 22-inch MS227 makes do with 1680 x 1050 and the MS202 gets downgraded to a 5ms response time and 1600 x 900 resolution. We just heard a couple of weeks ago that Samsung's Rogue and Intensity phones would be landing on Verizon sometime soon, and then we heard again that they'd be making their debut on September 8th and -- wouldn't you know it -- they've now both made their debut on September 8th. The higher-end of two is the Rogue U960, which replaces the Samsung Glyde and packs the same slide-out QWERTY keypad as before, along with a 3.1-inch AMOLED resistive touchscreen, a 3 megapixel camera with LED flash, a microSD card slot and, of course, the usual TouchWiz interface. The Intensity U450, on the other hand, hangs onto the sliding QWERTY keyboard for easy texting but drops the touchscreen altogether, and keeps things fairly lightweight all around, including a 1.3 megapixel camera, and not so much as EV-DO for data. Of course, it also comes with an equally lightweight price (free on a two-year contract), while the Rogue will set you back $99.99 on the same contract.

Elliptic Labs is back on the scene with another demo of its touchless UI. This time 'round the company's teamed up with Opera and presents us with a much more polished affair, not to mention a couple technical details. According to CEO Stian Aldrin, the device is based on ultrasound, tracks the hand itself (no reflector or sensor necessary), has a range of one foot, and has been designed to be either embedded in any electronic device (including a cellphone) or to connect to devices via USB. The company's current demo shows the technology being used to flip through photos in an Opera widget. Sure, a couple simple one-gesture commands isn't exactly "pulling all the stops," as far as a proof-of-concept goes, but we're looking forward to seeing what this company comes up with in the future. Most of Creately's diagram and illustration tools, ranging from dead-simple flowcharts to circuit diagrams, are free for signed-up users and allow sharing, embedding, publishing, commenting, and other collaboration tools for up to five people on publicly available works (paid accounts get more shared users and private postings). Like so many web tools, it strips down the interface of desktop offerings like Visio and makes it easier for first-timers to get a grasp on things. Click on a shape or line in your Creately chart, and a context menu offers all the options of moving, reshaping, resizing, or whatever else you can do with it.

We might ask for a more updated look than the steel-gray toolbars of yore, but the end products—stamped with a subtle Creately logo, unless you fork out—are what really matter. Creately is free to sign up for and use.

Want some deep smokey BBQ flavor without shelling out hundreds for a ceramic smoker? For $50 worth of parts and a trip to the hardware store, you can build your own.

One of the keys to good BBQ is low temperatures over extended periods of time. High-end smokers are made of ceramic to help keep the heat in while cheap ones are made of heat-shedding metal. You can get the heat-retaining properties of the higher end models by using terracotta pots as the body of your DIY cooker. Check out the video below of Alton Brown building and using a $50 smoker:
